thanks buddy, steelo u da man, thumbs up steelo the educator .
Thanks for the video!
thanks for the reply, i actually just changed my sump design, my sump before was no biological or mechanical filtration, sumps that acro guys like to use.
but a lot of dust sits on the bottom of the intake section where my octopus skimmer was, but then the dust slowly goes back through the tank settling on the substrate near the front.
now i added a section to the sump with 6L of matrix and built up with sponges and filter wool, now the substrate is clean and at the moment no algae
just watched this video for a recap! your a legend! shame i have to pay through the nose to get this product to the uk! ;)
@newyorksteelo Def will bro, thanks for the FAST reply too.
@newyorksteelo Sure will man! you have been a massive source of inspiration for me getting into this hobby. have watched all your videos twice over and dont know where i would be without them. Actually you have been a major reason why im about to spend 10 grand! ;) will defo shout you out on my videos and am so excited about this build! gonna be a few months before I even get to put my sand and live rock in!
peace!
steelo thunbs up well done
@newyorksteelo alright ill do that ill stop for right now until i get the test kits and will do a major water change by the way i do add calcium i dont just add alkaline. Thanks for your time.
Thanks bub,appreciate it!!
very useful information bro... all dis time i been tryin to get coraline algae to grow and cant.... i now understand wat i need to do thx again
Hey thanks my cal is 540 and I am dosing alk daily to keep a dkh of 7 If I understand your video eventually it will come in to balance. Also my mag is over 1700. Thanks Mike
Thank you so much.
I wish this was available in the Philippines!
your clownfish is loooooving those waves
Hey Steelo! you are by far the best reef tank teacher on the net! maximum respect! I too am a noob and was wondering can I dose calcium and alaklinity using dosing pumps into the sump or does it have to be pre mixed with rodi water?
good job. i have been dosing b-ionic for 4 months now. good stuff! not cheap but what's good cheap?
First of all thank you so much for your videos. You have made my life so much easier... Now for my question... I'm trying to figure out how the Cal and Alk co-inside with one another. Are you saying that it's almost like a see-saw effect? Where if the Cal is low then the Alk will be high and vise-versa? Right now I just did a WC. I'm at Cal 560 and Alk 13... I'm guessing as of right now to not start dosing just yet. I just bought this product today from the LFS. Thanks again Steelo!
awesome video man... I purchased some of this stuff in the small bottles like a month ago. It didnt last though since my new dog found it and ate it all LOL... Well, he didnt really eat it, he just spilled it. but anywayj i didnt get to use it but im definately going to get more of this stuff and begin dosing just to get the hang of it. hopefully coralline algae will take foot with this this dosing. Right now though, i need to finish messing with the sump to create a stable environment first....
@newyorksteelo aight man thanks
@discoslot
i only have 2 chromis and morphs and finger corals so maybe i need to add more corals to use up the excess calcium, i,m running quad t5s, not sure if i need to go to metal halide lights.
great video series, well done.
regards discosurf
Great, will try to do that with my next water change which is due this week, thanks alot for the your help
thanks :)
Calc- around 420
Alk- 10-11 dkh
Phosphate is high at 1 and i am in the process of lowering that
nitrate
@newyorksteelo thanks man! yeah ive read the dangers of overdosing and will be very aware of this! I will be doing it very slowly and testing constantly! am setting up an automated marine system and will be doing a video diary of the build and the journey. I hope you can find the time to check out my videos and give me tips along the way. thanks for your advice and keep your awesome videos coming ;)
Hey steelo great videos. My problem w/ my tank is i have been adding seachem buffer in my system everyday for a week now cause my dkh keeps going down while my calcium stays the same. I also found out that now cyanobacteria have started growing. My tank is about 2 yrs now.
@newyorksteelo
Yeah I know. I mean my corals are find they arent hiding or anything. But heres the deal. Im dosing the tech cb a and b and trace elements. But other than things like phyto plankton, I'm not dosing anything. I have a 29 gallon with a 10 gallon sump/fuge with 8 pounds of live rock and cheato and i'm also using the fluval 305 for my crabon/chem pure/phos remover. I do 5-10 gallon water changes weekly/bi weekly religiously. Nitrates 0-4, phos .3-.5 little high workin on it
What if my cal is a little bit high like at 500 if i add a little bit of alk will that lower my calcuim a bit i have learned alot from watching your videos just subscribed
Thank you, looks like ill be taking that approach for sure!
@funkmaster100 well whenever you get the chance please make a vid showing how to use this test correctly
Steelo.. Great work helping all of us through your experiences! You might want to think of owning your own reef shop someday. Good luck
Great video, good timing, cuz i just got these two bottles from MD :) Great review, as always! I think i'm half way done with my cycle, Ammonia = 0, Nitrites = sky high! Thanks for the review Steel.....
Thank you NYS. This is a very basic question, is it normal for the buffer to turn white as soon as it enters the water? Thanks again
got to love some of those questions.good vid,its nice hearing the same thing that that runs thought my head day to day with my system.keep up the good work.what a hobby.love it
@newyorksteelo oh thats not too bad, nice vid
Tropic marin Bio Calcium works ok too....
do you dose directly into your tank or do you dose into your sump?
so from this point on what would you do to get this back in line?
Best supplement... bi-weekly natural seawater changes.
How do you go about lowering your Calcium... I do weekly water changes and I am noticing that my calcium always wants to stay above 500 and I believe that is because of doing such frequent water changes...But what do you do to lower the calcium. I have salifert calcium and alkalinity test kits and the calcium never reads which means it's above 500 and my alk is around 9... Just didn't know if I should add alk to get my calcium to drop or what.... Thanks again for the help and awesome videos...
Thanks and okay ive heard different things about ALK, what the best way to remove phosphate? GFO? Carbon? Any suggestions
Glad I watched this again, I was having issues with high calcium and low alkalinity/carbonate. Hopefully I can fix it now!
:)
But like i said buddy i have the API test kit and it takes about 12 drops using the alk test kit so if i add more alk it won't raise my alk will it ps thanks for answering back so fast
My ph is about 8.5 been running 2 months but I added 1" of live sand cuz I was about 3.5" sand bed at the time which was last week so the mini cycle which is happening right now on the dsb may have been the cause for the ph rise and yeah, until I get a alk and magnesium test kit I won't know for sure. I have yet to do a water change tho do that maybe the Easyier solution. It's a 55g system with hob
I like this guy.. thanks brother, thumbs up
First of all I would like to.give you props ive learned alot JUST.FROM WATCHING YOU VIDEOS,now my question to you is,i just bought two dosing pumps from BRS and the B ionic 2 part solution, now my levels are 400 cal. And 8.4 Alk Dkh. But I use Aquavitro salt which keeps my level somewhat in tact, but now I jus bought a bunch of SPS and with that being said using a salt like mine wpuld you still recomend to dose 10ml a day...or should I do so,but just test everyday after installing the dosing pumps
my alk and magnesium are good so can i add the b ionic calcium part alone to raise the calcium or does it have to be both?
It would depend how many corals you have & at what particular rate they deplete minerals but for a tank like your big one or how most people want it full of colorful corals yeah I agree. I don't like some two parts though... some add salinity which you'll cause you to make a freshwater change to bring it down.
What's your opinion on calcium 2 part dosing versus adding kalkwasser to water ato?
Some books prefer kalkwasser over 2 part and calcium reactor as the best. Kalkwasser seems the easiest to me. What's your opinion? Thanks
@newyorksteelo Yeah, i dose 15ml of each component daily, considering 50 gal. main and 20 gal. fuge, minus LR/LS, about 60 gal. of a total water volume! Where do you keep your B-ionic, i mean you don't have to keep it in the fridge?
If I do water changes every 2 weeks that means I don't really have to add supplements? If so how many gallons should i change on a 150 gallon ? Thanks
Hi NYS. I am setting up a dosing pump to dose alk & calc & it'll be much easier to dose into the filter sock before the skimmer. Will this work or just reduce their efficiency? Thanks, Mick :))
Everyone better be watching this video is 480p or Steelo is gonna pay a visit to your houses and personally show you HD.
Using aquavitro salt in a 37 gallon with a aqueon model one sump, would you still dose 10ml of each everyday seeing this salt contains alot of each,or would you just dose 10ml and then test everyday, also I have over a dozen of sps and lps together...???
ohhhh ok, so it will show you the directions on the bottle and by testing and getting ur results, putting them 2gether will show you?
How often should I add calcium to my 20 with a 10 gallon sump
hey steelo! instead of daily - weekly dosing's, can I just buy a Calcium / CO2 reactor? I have been told by many that if I just use a Calcium / CO2 reactor, I dont need supplemental dosing's.
Would you recommend b-ionic calcium and alkalinity instead of kalkwasser?
Ah thankyou, I've just tried it and it disappears in seconds. This is my final question, sorry for being such a pain. Do you recommend using the 'night mode' on the power heads, or do you leave them in full 24hrs a day? Thanks again for all your help :)))
cool beans, i am really liking this kalkawasser, ive been growing some good coraline algea, which is what im looking for b/c i dont have anything like sps's. Is b-ionic expensive? how long would thoes containers last for ur 90g system?
Wow, you still got this MP-10 rocking that aquarium stand :))) I've noticed you fav'ed Vortech MP-60 video, it is a beast, the motor ventilation feature is the feature that all MP's should of have in my opinion!
What are your opinions on calcium reactors or kalkwasser reactors vs your method?
if your using your ato for dozing kalk can you put alk in your ato as like using the two part b-ionic so you don't have to be dozing daily
Hey Nys, do you dose any other elements or is this all you dose for your tanks??
@newyorksteelo So should I stop doing weekly water changes to try to keep the calcium from spiking up? And do you mix this stuff up with water first before adding it to your tank? Thanks again for the help...
Hey Steelo, do you add the dosage all at once?
Doesn't that make your pH go sky high?
@newyorksteelo yes thats what happens it becomes somewhat of a flaky effect after the alkaline is added...well as of right now i dont have any test kits to test my tank what i do is when i go buy my water at my lfs i ask them to test my water nitrate, nitrite, have been good at zero but my ph has been low between 7.6 to 7.8 i have to add marine buffer to get it right thats another thing im not sure why it gets low but i dont rember what the other specs are...am i putting my fish at any danger?
NYS do you dose the display tank or add the chemicals to the sump's return chamber?
@newyorksteelo oh no im sorry i use natureef brand its not just those 2 only. please excuse me i just started this around May im learning as i go by.
love the vids but i have a question for the last 2 dosages ive been doing in my tank the waster gets cloudy for maybe 15 secs when i add the Alkalinity am i doing something wrong?
Hey, should I turn off my protein skimmer when I does these or does it not matter?
Could I add the bionic calcium into my top off ro water. And add the Alkalinty part via a dosing pump? I have a 30 gal tank.
I purchased the B-Ionic additives today after watching your video. I used to dose several trace elements individually, but since B-Ionic already contains all the trace elements it will cut down my dosing. I don't know if one day of use makes any difference, but the polyps on my pagoda coral has been shrunken since I got it from my LFS. After the first dose, they actually looked more open and full. Keeping my fingers crossed...
you said that on one of them it has copper, isn't that bad for most inverts and flame angels? espeshally if ur adding it everyday?
nice video! i have a question. today i went to the fish store and asked them what supplements i need for 2 shrimps, 1 hermit crab, 2 live rocks, and 2 fish containing 20 gal aquarium. they gave me kent liquid calcium and kent iodide. i have no corals will that be fine using them? or supplementing only calcium will make problems? u say that also we need magnesium. do i really need it for no coral tank? thanks a lot!!
do you cut b ionic with r/o water or do you dose your tank straight b ionic
how will you figure out how much you need to add?
@riot401 b.t.w .... tap water can contain coppers and other metals which can and will kill all coral and most reef fish........especially if your in a big town or city when the water could very well come from ten or so miles away
Hi newyorksteelo.....
Great videos....really informative. I'm getting ready to start a FOWLR but at some point i'll be adding some soft corals. so when i initially start my setup should i be dosing with part 1 and part 2? I'm just wondering at what point should you start dosing your system....thanks
hello steelo luv your vids, wondering if u recommend doseing to lower calcium, mine is at 500-550 and mg is around 1400 alk is at 8.4, corals are not growing but r healthy looking, was told calcium is to high and out of balance with alk, to does alk and them calcium will drop, not sure if i should do it of not?(coraline algae is growing great)
I've been thinking about getting this stuff for a while. Is the Iodide in the B-ionic enough for the shrimp and hermit crabs to molt safely? Thanks for making this video, It has made my decision. =]
Do you dose the aquarium with both bottles everyday when the aquarium is already at the proper levels? I'm trying to step up my coralline growth only.
Hey steelo; great video; had a question about adding red montepora to my new 55 gallon system. Ca is at 440 ppm. Someone is selling a 4-5" mounted frag for$25. Can I add it? Is my system too new. I got 2 actinic 2 10000k; total of 210 watts. Only 2 clown fish for bio load. Thanks
How can i lower my alk?
If I just leave it alone the levels stay fine. I do a 15% water change about every week or two. Should I still dose it a little? I'm just wanting to step up my coralline algae.
Whats up NYSTEELO? i want to get your opinion on something. Do you prefer the 2 part dosing or a calcium reactor?
I am trying to make a decision on which way to go i just like and trust your knowledge in this hobby!
my tank is a 160 gallon not alot of sps. just random corals.
whats your thoughts.
hey steelo my older bro got 155 gallon tank and he cant get his calsium levels up he been adding stuff but its not working...he got a m p40 pump a nice skimmer the best leds u can buy any thing u could think of that might help
hi i have a 300 gal i had it for a 1yr what is the dose for it and i had trouble testing is there a accurate and easy test kit
@newyorksteelo When you recommended to @klok95330 to do water changes in "series" until he get the right parameters is a weekly water changes or every 2 or 3 days ? I'm thinking on doing that to tray to even the Alk and Cal as you recommended in you comment and then add both when they drop.
About the calcium, dkh and ph and additives. Im having a probem with that as well. My ph is at about 7.8-8.0 my calcium is at 400 and my dkh is at 20. What would you recommend? I dont have any means to test magnesium though
Do i need this for only a fish tank and no reef? I only have live rocks, sand and 2 clown fish?
if u put 10ml on 30 gal would u put 30ml on a 90 gallon? and is B-ionic the only additive that you need to use (does it have every single thing you need to add?) thanks
hi i need help !! how much should i dose in my tank of 110 gallons?
@newyorksteelo it is a newer system going on three months now, when you say to use the ph buffer im not sure what would be absolutly necessary and when to use it if my ph is at the ok level now? i am going to be posting a video of my system in a minute maybe you could look at it and let me know what you think..thanks
@newyorksteelo that was the first test i have done, and just did another 2nd ph test came down to 8.2-8.4ppm nitirtes dropped also on 2nd test to 0.05ppm. i just picked up red sea marine lab kit. it does have an alkalinity test also which i got 2.9-3.6 which i do not no the conversion for other brand test kits...i did pick up ocean's blend ph/alkalinity and calcium part 1 and 2 and thinking about dosing what do you think...the kit also came with a ph buffer but not sure if i should use it
@newyorksteelo yeah man my tank's been running for a year and i never knew about magnesium until last week so i ordered a bottle of ESV Magnesium and got a bottle of BrightWell Aquatics Magnesion Magnesium from the lfs for the time being i already use B-Ionoc i heard you say you only dose b- ionic and thats what i've been doing 15cc everyday do you add mg
My dkh is 12 and my ca is 380; can I just add the b ionic prt2 (ca) or do I still need to add both intil I get my calcium up?
Ok, after a few days and Ive gotten my dkh down to about 13 and calcium is at 380-400. So Im getting that in order. I also just took your advice and got a phos reactor as well. My next purchase is going to be a RO/DI unit. Any recommendations for one? It has to be on that attaches to the faucet cause I live in an apartment.
Hey Steelo its me once again... I have the API test kit, i saw it on your newly video that you have it as well..
Whenever i used my test it here are my results..
Alk - 15 drops.
Calc 25-26 drops.
Those is are the drops i do until i get the end results... It means that i have high alk and Calc right?... How do i fix this.. ive done water changes and still same results..
@newyorksteelo last week my calcium was 500 and dkh was 8 and in the past i have not been able to keep any sps frags alive so a guy on world wide reefs said a dkh of 8 is kinda low for calcium of 500 ppm and he asked whats my magnesium levels and i thought to myself i have never added magnesium
my system 4x2x2, 500 litres
calcium between 500-550
kh = 10
trying to raise magnesium
and strontium
