Some of these links may be affiliate links where I would receive compensation if you were to purchase them. The money earned from these affiliate links goes into making videos, just like this one. I could never really grasp the Cal/Alk issue whenever reading articles, forum posts, and the like. Thanks for making it easy to digest, I get it now!
Glad to help.
Very helpful video and I will be using a similar strategy. One thing I would stay away from, based solely on my experience as a pharmaceutical scientist who develops IV infusion rates and does volumes: your automatically determined dose volumes of 0.4 mL at intervals is never going to end up at 0.4 mL. With the space between dosing and the high salt environment, osmotic diffusion, etc, you are much better off using minimum doses in the range of 3-5 mL, less frequently. You will be more accurate overall that way (even if the same precision per dose). For example if you have twenty 0.4 mL doses with a +/- tolerance for the pump of 0.2 mL (a huge stretch for a hobby level pump), you could potentially under-dose by 50%! If you have 4 doses of 5 mL with that same pump tolerance, you are only looking at a max under-dose of 4%.
so timely. I have this exact problem. My calc cant be tested. Its been high since I started reefing. Hanna reads flashing 500 on every test. I got a reefbot and every test there fails. I dont add anything. Use RODI (7 stage), cannot figure it out. We do have very hard water but I assumed that the RODI would take it out. Anyway gonna watch the vid now
I'm having the same problem now in my 65g reef ..mostly lps tank calcium is 499 alk is 6.9 . I just ordered my apex won't be here until Friday..5 days from now. How do I do I fix this without the apex . I was using brightwell code B only for a month..I didn't change anything. Now I'm switching to seachem reef carbonate. I'm adding 15 mills twice a week. So 30 mills a week total. Should I use baking soda. My PH is 7.9 I would appreciate your advice
So basically when your calcium is too high and it has driven down your alkalinity you are just dosing alkalinity to drive the calcium down and bring the alkalinity up?
Investing in a hana alk tester finally great videos
Hanna is the best.. till the trident comes to market.
hi can Calcium go up if you don't dos it.... mine has gone up but i only dos ALK... or do i need to retest
Gr8 video, thanks
My tank is 3 week old still cycling
Calcium 373
Ph 7.9
I dont understand why ph is low, and calcium
You know why possibly please
I thought new tank would have good parameters since there are no creatures in the tank, confused
The grow of bacteria can reduce pH and ALK as well. I’ll be working on a video for this subject soon.
I'm so glad you did this video, I didn't realize that calcium and alkalinity effected each other. I have always had high calcium with low alkalinity. About 4 months ago I started dosing alkalinity to improve it. I have noticed my calcium levels getting into a more normal range as my calcium levels used to be almost 600. Although I had noticed more normal calcium range 460-490 I didn't realize until now that was due to the alkalinity. Thanks so much for all of your videos, always learn something new 😀
i have a huge problem. I added 14 corals but tiny lil frags to a 36 gallon, but feeding the reefroids and having nevr feed it to this tank made nitrates up to about 80! Alk dropped to 6 calcium is good at 460. I am also questiong this api kit that had lids off the nirtates and dkh. The bigger problem is I have more corals, of about 18 coming in in 4 days. I could maybe get it changed to a week. I havnt feed anymore reef roids. I am not sure how long to get a hanna checker though. I am going to do 2 water changes. If they come in and its still out of whack but being fixed soon will it kill my corals? IT took about 3 weeks to fix a problem with a credit i dint get and all the while they were having ebay auctions and a live sale and I just kept adding more...lol Stupid I know. Like there is another auction on sunday and this one has really great deals better than any so far! OMG Shipping is paid to and it would co st me more to get these corals anywhere else! This is unique corals so you know they have nice corals! But will they die that fast. I am going to be slowly uping ph and alk. I also want to start carbon dosing. Just hooked up skimmer a few days ago, so that might make a difference. This tank is 5 months old. I am also getting radions next week so its a lot of changes for the ones I have had for about a month and the new ones coming are used to radions but probably pristine water!
Did you ever make an updated video? I’m dosing now and my cal is 480 and my alk is 8.12. I just turned off my cal but I did do a water change today. I’ll keep an eye on it daily. I want my alk up to 9 and cal at 450. My mag was 1390. Thanks
Really enjoying all of your content, thanks for a ton of information I’ve found useful!
Interesting video. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
My parameters are on the high end but in the normal range. However my Dkh is 6.8.5 and has been for a month. My tank is 2 months old and adding coral. I perform 20%water change every week. Should I bring Alk up a bit ? And how do I do this without affecting other parameters because they are fine? Thanks and anyone feel free to comment, thanks
Is there a video about how to do this if you DON’T have the wolds most sophisticated digital screen controlled system?
How do you lower calcium and raise alkalinity when you haven't dosed anything? Is it strickly through a water change? My calcium about 520. I have no corals other than star polyps and zoanthiads.
I have the salifert alkalinity test and I am doing the test and it never turns pink it almost does at the end so does that mean my alkalinity is way to high?? I think that’s what it means what should I do?
Nice video and some good advice. Subscribed to your channel :)
Thanks for the sub and watching!
Great Video. Going thru same situation right now..
Can I get some advice tanks naw 1.5 years old cal 573 and alk 20.0 it's been like thies for about a year I think it's not gd haw can I chang this
th-cam.com/users/shorts7mHoj02cPQc
I’ve had that same problem and my magnesium was off too. Hopefully yours is inline.
I was dealing with the same problem a few months again in my 43 gallon Red Sea reefer system. I’ve been manually dosing 10ml alkalinity a day and it’s slowly coming up. Do you think a dosing system is over kill in my small reef.
You can dial it in for an size tank.
So by just dosing alkalinity and keeping it up higher it will balance the calcium back down and start using equal amounts again?? I've been getting my butt kicked by this and no answers anywhere. Please tell me how this worked to fix it.
That’s what I did.
Thanks i am having this same issue in one of my tanks.
Glad I could help
Mad Hatter's Reef so pretty much I have to very slowly raise my alk from the 8.4-8.5 to say 9.0 to get my sky high 540-550 ca to drop? That or the api ca rest is way off. Ughh. This shit is so hard!
Spooooky, I'm having exactly the same issue this week. Calc is off the chart for my salifert, so over 500, yet the kh/alk has dropped to 7.6 and I did a 50% water change today! Totally stumped as to why this has happened, but my Ph is sitting on 7.76 and the SPS are not looking happy!!
Every is looking great in my tank just noticed it during weekly testing.
Hopefully you've caught it all in time! You've probably already seen it, but I'm liking this handy dandy lil article www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/11/chemistry
Great update! thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Will this work on any 2 part I us ATI essential pro. thanks for the video.
How do you know what caused it?
I have alk at 11/12 my calc is at above 500 how can I Lower the all all I have right now is softies
Thanks for the vid. I was wondering how to bring my alk up. I saw vids and forum saying when you dose alk you also have to dose cal. Which doesn't make sense cuz my alk sitting at 5.6 and cal at 510
Like the video but there are people who don’t have the apx. What do you recommend for those of us who don’t
Besides getting an apx
Ok I don't have a Neptune I have 2 dose so what do you do if you don't have a Neptune?
Nice job once again!
Thanks for watching!
Hey Mad Hatter, I got cal at 580 and on. How do I lower it???
Just in time. Very helpful!
That’s why I’m here!
My Ca and Alk are both cray out of line and I don't have an Apex system (someday....). I am currently dealing with it Sometimes I wonder if the Coral is really worth all the trouble,
Only you can decide that!
What testing method do you use?
New sub here.. also new reef tank owner. This info makes sense but the software with automatic 17 minute doses is not a reality here.. i am doing this by hand.. wish me luck
Good thing you test often. I gotta start being better at that.
one day my wife will say yes to a big tank , lol, nice job as always thanks
So accurate video. Most reefer face this problem
Thanks for watching!
but what causes it to get out of whack? usually calcium drops it does not increase?
A lot of things most common is coral consumption
@@MadHattersReef for me, mine turned out to be I had the alkalinity too high and it was causing the calcium to calcify all of my sand.
I like the content. Im in that exact situation with the same setup so its spot on for me! Thx.
I just got mine in line as if this week. nothing good happens fast.
What happened after?what about magnesium?
I know Magnesium doesn't swing that much, but doesn't that have a large part with balance of calcium and alkalinity
How about if u don’t have all that fancy system like yours with a computer system ?
Great content. Keep it coming
My tank is at 1.7 dkh what do i need to do?
Good information again. Thanks man.
What should all specs be for a reef tank
Thank you for the info!
I’m going to start dosing soon
Make sure you test your parameters.
Mad Hatter's Reef I do about once a week with kalk calcium usually stays at 380 and alkalinity at 7
For the life of me I can’t get my ca to drop (540-550) mg 1480 and my alk I have to dose daily to keep at 8.5 I have lps and softies what am I doing wrong?! Ughh
I'm in the same exact boat
@@foxchase725 Me too, same problem. Looks like if I try to maintain the levels of alk by dosing. Then the ca and mg is rising also. If i stop dosing alk, then it looks like it slowly going down, but then alk and ph will be way to low. Alk is now 8.46 and ca 554 mg 1460 and ph 8.02. How are your reef tanks looking now guys. Did you find a solution?
I ha mi calcium an 540 how to do it for lower down
Hogan Machine! Thanks for the tips I’m battling right now.
Great info. Keep them coming.
Nice video as always 👍
I've always been told never to dose one without the other. Is that a myth.?
I started cycling my 5 gallon tank a few days ago and I tested the calcium and it was at 520
Nice video
Well explained - clear, concise - this is brilliant ;)
Not sure about all that but 🙏
What is the best test kit
Salifert is the best of the titration test kits but hanna checkers are the best overall.
Gotta get an Apex!!! Makes everything easy!
It does but apex isn't the only option out there.
Mad Hatter's Reef I like the ekoral too, however it looks very basic with not as many options. Maybe I’m wrong.
Thanks for the insite man
Thanks for watching!
How can I reduce alkalinity? Mines over 12 and I’ve tried mostly everything
Water changes will help but it's going to take a few of them.
most of the people over here don't use the apax dosing system, so i would recommend dosing slowly 4 gallon 1ml for 1 week till you see the results sh!t if you don't have a dosing pump any that's the struggle manual dosing.
reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/index.php
will help a lot
Everything was fine in my tank now my calcium is at 740 and alkalinity is at 1 smfh idk what happened
I dosed kent a and b nano and my calcium is still at 340
Me too this well help a lot thank
you forgot to mention the reason of droping alkalinity and raising calcuim mineral..
Thanks for pointing that out
You forgot magnesium very important in maintaining calcium and dkh I use arm extra course reactor Media and iquatics synthetic salt UK my calcium is 700 magnesium 1600 dkh 14.5 coral grow wild you need a reactor because co2 is important your waisting your time doseing get a reactor and high buffed Pro reef salt synthetic
Love your vid about to learn how to dive any tips love corals my favorite is torch coral
I got nothing in the dive department...
So true.
Love the shirt!
Thanks!
Nice shirt! 🤙🏻
Thanks
WHAT ARE YOU DOSING TO INCREASE ALKALINITY?!
ME Coral products
Keep videos coming
You got yourself a Sub buddy :D
Nice looking shirts and great video. One day I'll have an APEX system.
Pick me I wanna win. I never win anything. I couldn't even buy a winning lottery ticket LMAO .
Me either
I want a apex Neptune 😢 it looks sooo easy!
Making TH-cam videos got me mine.
Notification squaaad
🙌🏻
👊👍
APEX looks like a great system. Someday I'll get one!
They make things a lot easier
yeahhhh buddie!!!
Thanks for watching!
Man I need an apex!
It’s a great piece of equipment but you’re going to pay 💰 for it.
I like lemonade lol
me too
I was having the same problem, go figure🤔
Stay tuned...
Nice informative video! Did you just get a haircut?
Haha, that a hell of a thing to say to a bald guy.
How’s your computer boss 😂
I knew my computer was bad but did realize how bad it was until I go this one. It’s going to take me a little while to figure out FCPX but I should be making some crazy videos in no time. Thanks for asking!
I’m the worst when it comes to testing.
don't quickly judge yourself, your more than you think you are
You have beautiful eyes
8 Minutes to say dose more alk, less cal.
