Biggest takeaway: first thing in AM, visualize what it will take to make the day a really good one. Pick a few things, not a todo list. I'll be starting this tomorrow!

When I was in grade school back in the 1950's (yes I'm a geezer) I was never taught how to "learn" or "study" The teachers just said read the material and your notes. I did that and then flunked the test. Their reply was "you did not study!" I did what they told me to do and it did not work and it's my fault? No wonder I had no faith in what they were teaching me. It took many years for me to figure out how to study and learn. Wish I knew this when I was a kid...

I think the only education we need is to learn how to find our true interests. The learning just happens after that.

Each of Jim's statements are so full in and of themselves. I stopped after many sentences to process the info, and found them deep and rich.

It's mostly coming from meds if you look at their Adverse side effects or withdrawals.. or psychological side effects you will see that most of them start affecting the cognitive.. then they will quickly try to diagnose vs actually tapering slowly off and actually fixing the real problem

I was learning Italian language for a couple of years, and then my memory started to decline, and I had to quit the language. That's only been a year ago and I can barely remember half the things that I knew. So I don't know if I truly believe that if you try to learn things, it will make you not forget. I think there's a natural progression of forgetfulness that you can't stave off, no matter how much you try to remember things.

I really appreciate that Dr. Hyman has been having these conversations about improving cognition, memory and thinking since it's so related to everything else in the health conversation. I've listened to about half and definitely intend to finish.
I'm especially glad to hear the conversation about how our technology is impairing our ability to use our minds! My personal belief is that we are generally missing a big opportunity for technology to truly take us to the next level because it has instead become something that significantly distracts us and causes us to not operate to our full potential. I personally have not owned a smartphone (th-cam.com/video/ehKeZVHdQNk/w-d-xo.html), initially because I didn't want to pay the money when they were first entering the market, but now because I'm reluctant to get used to one for the reasons mentioned in this podcast. I hope this conversation continues to expand so that we as a society can rethink and recalibrate.
Very inspirational podcast. Great guests, and very helpful info, as always.
