At least haven't thrown your rucksack into a fast moving stream, and see it float away. :)
One time camped on a little mound at the bottom of a valley. Rained heavily overnight and in the morning found ourselves on a island. Stream was jumpable, but decided to try and throw rucksack over first. Got entangled in straps and rucksack didn't make it, in the stream it went and floated down stream. Was fortunate enough able catch up with it and recover it before entered a reservoir/lake.

I highly recommend hammock tents. They get you off the ground and away from the wet and are by far the most comfortable sleep you'll get in the bush.

Have you seen a tree in this video? I love hammock camping at home, but i would never go to scotland without my tent. Maybe there are more forests in the suthern uplands, but i would not rely on it.

Living and Hiking in the Pacific Northwest USA. You get used to changing weather, But still can be surprised. Once in July I was caught at 8000 ft. on a mountain in a 3 day blizzard. The snow being wet and heavy actually collapsed my tent upon me while I slept, woke up thinking a branch of a tree had fallen on me just to find out as I found the zipper in the dark and confinement of the tent upon me that it was snow that had buried me as it fell in as I unzipped my door. Spent the next three days and two nights knocking off the snow from inside the tent, eating cheese and crackers. Sun came out the fourth day and I hiked down the mountain to Baker City Oregon and ate a hot meal, bought a new tent and hiked back up the mountain. When the Sun comes out after a experience in the Bush, makes everything you go thru and struggle with a conquered challenge warming you to the spirit and gives you the strength and want to continue on.
Look forward to the next episode of your hike hoping the weather is more forgivable to your goal.

I have to say your version of camping challenges has the comedy element to it David but I bet not at the time. People will have just a teeny giggle lol. It's amazing just how much you can really look after yourself in the face of adversity. I'm hoping my first trip on my own to the Lake District, Cumbria will be all sun and fun😉 Manchester, England

@@Ps-tc9ko My whole life has been Comedy and Tragedy rolled into one, It is the Comedy of a situation that has eased the Tragedy to create a lifetime of memories that I would not give up for fame and fortune, it has made the Man I grew to be.
You truly find out what you are made of, and how strong you can be faced with what Life and Nature can hand you. I would not want it any other way.
Thanks for the comment, and I am even happier I could make you giggle. May your travels be memories you will never forget and their teachings make you whole.

SOGGY! I am thinking perhaps a couple of bin bags so there is somewhere to put all that needs to be dry. They are also very useful for putting your feet in at night if the tent leaks and you can make one into a tube for helping keep warm if it gets especially cold.. A few smaller bags are handy so you can put your dry feet in them and then into wet boots.

A great walk and thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing how it might have changed a bit since I did it solo 25 years ago. There are some very exposed sections you will have to cope with and I would suggest that you use the occasional bothy along the way, can be helpful when the weather is bad. You have probably worked it out but it is harder going than, say, the West Highland Way because it does cross a lot of valleys.

Oh dear, never mind! A dreich start to be sure. I've only done bits of that trail when it came into our walks with the club. It can be very dismal at times when it rains but other times the views are breathtaking. I think your track takes you quite close the giant 'golfball' at Green Lowther hill and of course by the highest brewery in the country at Wanlockhead where by this time you have probably had a nice lunch and sit by the open fire at the bar in the inn. They also have 'glamping' cabins there though I have never looked inside. You can get a licence and pan for gold for the day too! Enjoy the rest of SUW.

I've just finished a ten days wild camping in Scotland, (it was rainning every single day a few times too) the best advice I received was to put my tend into the bush, between trees and it works! they keep you safe of windstorm, and helps a lot with rain too. Hope you enjoy this beatiful country and people are so kind here, it's amazing!

That's a rough start. Inspiring to see you bounce back. Weird as it may sound, that's not easy. I've been doing hikes like these for over ten years and weather is a huge factor, like you said. The same spot can seem devine with a bit of sun, yet ghastly when the rains paint it grey, the sun dries up creeks or the snow envelopes a route. I don't think I've ever had a trip where weather didn't try to throw me a mental curveball in some way.
Overcoming that, learning something about yourself... supervaluable. Enjoy :)

Hi Marina 😊 Hope you had a nice night in the hotel! I love seeing you on your travels, you're so inspirational and you really warm my heart. I live in Northumberland and plan on visiting the west coast of Scotland next year. You take care and have a great time 👍🏻

Oh great you are doing a through hike!!! I'm so excited cos I would really like to do one too and I have never done one before. It is something I am contemplating doing one day. So I was sooo excited to see your video today! I shall be following you with great interest. Please do a gear review afterwards so we can see how effective your stuff was. I also follow an American called Dixie whose channel is called homemade wanderlust. She has done three mega through hikes in the USA the appalachian trail, the PCT and the CDT. She is also very inspiring if you like through hiking. Anyway this is great! !. Best of luck on your hike. Can't wait for episode 2😊

Is that Dunure Castle I see in the background?
Good for you and going south must be better weather and temperature wise, I have wild camped all along there, Balantrae beach normally but last time when I got out of my tent at night the wind instantly ripped it from its pegs and took it out to sea, I just went home :)

Hi Marina, I stayed at Castle Bay campsite on the 26th August on the very same spot as yourself, the rubbish heap had been cleared a bit by then or perhaps you had a big campfire to keep you warm lol . Did I hear correctly that you paid £8? I was charged £10, perhaps you got a reduced rate as you were doing the Southern upland way. I look forward to watching your progress and I hope the weather is kind to you. xx
