Hi Prof! I was wondering if it’s possible to do a second PhD in the Netherlands? My first was obtained in a different country. Is this possible or usually discouraged in the NL? Thanks for your advice.

That really depends on what’s going on. Getting a second PhD is very unusual. Yet I do know someone who has two. They just changed their field of expertise with time. Sometimes it’s the case that people got their first PhD too many years ago and maybe in the ussr and now they want to update. That happens sometimes. So, what’s you case? Did you recently receive a PhD and want to do another one? In a new field? You would really need to justify why another PhD and why not post-doc.

@@plovism13 my field of interest has changed since getting my PhD; and coupled with being a stay at home mom for 2 years, I’ve lost touch with what’s happening in the field. I thought another PhD will allow me to focus on my current interest as it’ll be difficult to get a postdoc in a field I have no experience in yet. Although I could revert to publishing in the new field and rely on those publications to get a postdoc.

@@Dunnstakenz again that depends. For instance, if switching from sociology to media studies, it would make sense to just publish a bit and go for a post doc. Interdisciplinarity makes sense in some cases. If switching between more distant fields, it could be tricky indeed. What are the fields?

@@plovism13 related fields - Human Geography and Urban Planning. But I want to switch to a different epistemology

@@Dunnstakenz I would say, not worth getting a second PhD given all the stress it can cause. Get a post doc instead. Whatever choice you make, best of luck in pursuing your dreams!
