I still can’t believe there’s a series that combined the Lost Roman Legion and Pokémon and it actually worked!

Finally some codex alera love on booktube. One of my favourite series but hardly anyone ever seems to talk about it

I loved it as well and I don't understand why it is not more popular.
It made me miss heroic fantasy. I love grimdark and morally grey characters as much as the next person, but I enjoyed reading about a "classic" hero again.
I also like many side characters especially Kitai, Max, Ehren and Bernard. The main relationship and friendships were portayed very well.
I agree, it was so great that Tavi was so capable without furies. And I loved how Butcher showed that weakness as strength, as it made Tavi cleverer than most people and being able to think outside the box.
    Spoilers
-I liked how it was Kitai saving Tavi multiple times instead of the other way around and their bond and banter was great. I loved how smart Kitai is, but how she plays the "barbarian" to mess with people sometimes
-I'm usually good at catching hints, but I did not guess who Tavi was in the first book. I have reread the first book recently and Jim planted sooo many hints. How did I miss it? I guess that is good writing. An author wants things to be a surprise, but if readers pay attention, it is possible to guess. And those spoilery book titles... I felt dumb when I finally realised who Tavi was.
-How creepy are the Vord? I can honestly say no other fantasy creatures creeped me out that much
-I like it when books make me feel things and these books caused feelings like euphoria or elation whenever Tavi, the "freak", succeeded. Especially when he beat that scary woman in this duel and everyone was like 'Hail Octavian' or when he tore down that building in the last book. Such scenes, as cheesy as they are, put me in a good mood for hours.

Good review, I love to see more people talking about this series. It was the first Epic Fantasy I ever read and I treasure it to this day.

I knew you'd like Codex Alera. It's just so good. I read it way before I read WoT, so I would never think of comparing them like you did.

The extremely long and contrived trek through the swamp with the disabled First Lord was probably the worst part for me. That and the month-long healing bath for Araris.
Other than that, I loved the series.

And to think this was made on a bet of making a story that mixed the Lost Roman Legions and Pokemon.

I see no reason at all to call the codex alera Wheel of time light. It is it’s own thing and having read both, I prefer jim butchers storytelling over that by Robert Jordan.
