As you can see, it's a very common thing to watch anime in Japan. Even though not every grown-up watches them regularly, most of them have watched some stuff in the past. With younger generations, pretty much everybody watched anime when they were little.
Even if you are not Japanese, many of you have watched some Japanese anime when you were little.
But with subtitles and dubs, a lot of nuances are lost in translation. So if you want to fully enjoy anime, you need to learn Japanese.
And if you want to learn Japanese with me, I can send you some Japanese lessons where I teach you the kind of Japanese that Japanese people actually speak. Click here and subscribe bit.ly/3q0qr92

Yaasss!
I would like this video it wasn’t being posted during historic protests taking place in the US and other places around the world. I was really hoping you would have a video asking Japanese people if they understood the situation in the US. I’m here and I live in a city where there are massive demonstrations. This is historic and something people under the age of 60 haven’t experienced.
I had seen elderly playing switch games, and some of them watching anime on their cellphones, although not a super common thing (from what I had experienced)
I never been to japan so watching your videos feels like i visit japan.. thank you yuta man

“It’s strange at this age”
Nah, I disagree, growing older shouldn’t mean abandoning your old interests (unless you naturally lost interest)
i feel like it's not that it,is,strange,to,watch,it per se (like, "ew anime? at my age?"), it would be strange to BE ABLE TO watch it, because of family, community and work responsibility. they're on their 50-70s of age... though it might rather be interesting if there's any elder community exclusively get together because of anime, they won't be talking about typical depressing stuffs like their growing disease and politics.
Definitely got a strong whiff of "I am not allowed to like things that society says I shouldn't like at my age" from his comment. That's a part of Japanese culture I strongly dislike.
I'm now in my mid-40's. I really started getting into anime nearly 25 years ago, and everything was fresh and new to the point that I would watch everything I could get my hands on. These days, I still enjoy it on occasion, but like the elders here, I often long for the nostalgic stuff rather than what comes out now.
@@Tohlemiach "That's a part of Japanese culture I strongly dislike"
But's it's not Japanese thing. This is literally how whole "sheep" civilization works. And this is even bigger reason to respect people that don't care about others and they are doing what they like.
Still tho there are times where it really feels that way, and not from abandoning them. For example, recently I was watching K-On and I had to ask myself if I was a bit old for it? And I faced the reality that even if I wasn’t now there would be a day where it would be rather weird now wouldn’t it
I also felt like I had perhaps lost too much innocence by this point to be watching it, although that’s a separate (yet related) issue
I mean, I see where they’re coming from, and it’s not just social pressure, although I think that’s tied up with it too

Bruh you can tell that so many elders (especially males) don’t even want to be caught watching anime currently because they think it’s childish
I guess it’s a generational stigma
Their parents were from the generation of shame who remember how it felt to be on the losing side, a lot of whom tried very hard to maintain the culture and lifestyle of the era before the western modernisation of their country, so they would have raised their children to have certain opinions. When I say era I don't mean the literal eras btw, since Hirohito was on the throne for a very long time.
@@CarboKill I thinks it's just that they find natural disgust because anime is for kids lmao
When you get old you will understand how much it's for them.As you know im not old enough but i know it :)
same in the west. older people here still think watching cartoons is childish
Have yet to meet anyone in my experience who finds cartoons in anyway childish. I rather think thats just you projecting nonsense. For those of us who work in Music, the interest in animation is phenomenal and everything from voice actors (some of whom are in their 50s and 60's) and the supporting bands I work with (some Japanese, some not) have no issues with the medium at all. People need to stop assuming their personal experience is universal (which yes includes me but you are doing it as well).
'Some' older people may think it is childish, that is their free opinion and one that many millions do not share. Often overlooked is the age of many who wrote the original cartoons and magazines and comics. Some were already old men when they started and smiled just as much as the children they would go onto inspire.
in Japan "anime" simply means animation. so yes Frozen, The Simpsons, Avatar are all "anime"

I'm Swiss and 52yo and I still watch animes, a lot of animes, especially in this period when I was forces to stay home for month, I've watched almost a complete season of some series a day, a real binge watching of almost everything. I love animes, I love the way the stories and the characters are defined and developed.
So personally I don't find anything strange to watch animes even for grown up people, because the stories are so varied that you can find your happiness at every age.
I also regularly go at the Polymanga that is a big manga/anime/pop culture convention in Montreux (Switzerland) and I like it very much.
Im happy to hear, as a young Swiss, that some people of older Swiss Generations like Anime too! Thats not very common in Switzerland.
Another young swiss here 😂 sadly i don't know anyone in person who watches anime or reads manga/light novels. I only watch anime, but i consider getting into manga and light novels. Honestly, i didn't really know about polymanga. Do you go alone or with other people? Is it worth to go alone?
@@bwabbel I'm not too much in light novels and manga (I have some, ex. the complete Detective Conan in french).
At the Polymanga, I usually go "alone" because I work there as a staff, it's very funny and sometimes stressful. I've started going there from the beginning (2005) as a visitor and, in 2011 (if I'm not wrong), I've started as a staff and I never stopped.
You can perfectly go alone or with someone, it's the place to be if you are fan of anime and other japanese stuffs. But it's better if you understand french because many presentations are done in french (some in english or japanese with french translation).
Another funny convention in Lausanne is the Japan Impact, is smaller than Polymanga but it's good too.
I've heard of another convention in german switzerland (Basel if I'm not wrong) but I've never visited it.

@@djpagla1294 Hi, yes I know the Belgian comics, I have many in my house and I like them too. I've started with Belgian and Italian comics and later I've discovered the mangas. I've watched animes from the first ones that have come to Europe in the 70s/80s (UFO Robot Grendizer, Mazinger Z, Asto Boy and so one) and I've almost never stopped (except in the 90s when I was student that I had no much time to watch animes). Years after that (end of the 90s) I've discovered many more animes that where almost unknown by the public in Europe, and I've started watching again. I speak Italian, French and English (and I understand a bit of German too), for now I have mostly french dubs/subs (and some italian but you find less stuff in italian, in french is more common).

Interesting how they nod their heads, which we associate with "yes", when they say "no".
One of the reasons why all characters in FF7 Remake with more than ~2 lines of dialogue had two sets of facial expression sequences for dialogue;
One for japanese audio and the other set for english audio.
It's explained in the short "behind the scenes" documentary of making if FF7R
people nod their heads to show they're listening to you and understand you, so it doesn't necessarily match with what they're saying haha
@@kailex8902 That's true. And, when someone asks "It's not xxxxx, is it?" and the answer in English is "No, it's not," they would say "Yes(, it's not)" in Japanese and nod their heads.
Different culture is interesting. And in India, shaking your heads mean yes, cmiiw
Nodding your head is just the same as someone waving their hands while talking.
When you're talking you usually look at them in the eye so it makes sense that you nod your head while talking still focusing on you.
Imagine following someone's hand as they talk.

So glad to see Detective Conan mentioned. He is right, it is very much a multi-generational show.
Yeah, even in my country, random 40 years old aunties in your neighbours, probably have complete collection of Conan without even understanding the word "manga"
Well, that show has started broadcasting 22 years ago so it's able to bring three generations together...
i don't even watch the video, u just spoil everything lol 😌,
When i watch Conan i always watch it on tv and my mom watchs it too and she like that anime so much.. we have watched over 300 episodes toghter😅😅
The dispute typically begins here: the word “anime” (shortened from “animēshon“) is the Japanese pronunciation of the word “animation.” In Japan, the word is often used as a blanket term for all animated content no matter where it's from. ... So, even though it's not Japanese, it's anime.
Thats Why In Japan They Called Frozen As An Anime
Nobody mentioned Doraemon!? I’m 46 and I watched Doraemon and Sazae-san with my mom when I was a kid😌
We also watched 世界名作劇場series (like Heidi, Rascal, Little women, Anne of green gables...)
And I still watch anime with my teenage sons😅
I’m actually watching Anne of green gables, just started, and dubbed, but I’m learning Japanese, so I should transition soon. I liked the canadian miniseries from the 80s, so I was excited to know that there was an anime for it. How did older generations stand to watch so many episodes?
@Atharv Khatri Perman was pretty funny. That's the only reason I watched it. The title was so stupid that I laughed so hard when I heard it for the first time. I know my sense of humour is childish but I was a kid back then.
Plot-wise, I didn't really find it too interesting. It was basically Doraemon with superheroes. I'm not entirely sure but I think they're also in the same universe. A copy robot was used in a Doraemon Movie I think.

The Black Ryvius Those series aired on Sunday nights for half hour and we watched it after dinner🙂

To begin with, there are not that many people in Japan who have good feelings about otaku. Most either stay away from them or ridicule them in the same way that people overseas do to weeaboo. Basically, otaku are considered to be a race of people who have no place in the real world and are only escaping reality by watching anime and the Internet to get transient pleasure. In fact, that's exactly what they are.

A lot of Americans hate today's American comic books. Japanese manga began outselling American superhero comics in the United States last year. "Why Are Manga Outselling Superhero Comics? Rutgers professor explores varying themes in Japanese and American comics," by Cynthia Medina, Rutgers Today, Rutgers University, December 5, 2019 .
@@crusherjoe8519 it's not the same. Comic Industry has transformed heroes into political or one-dimensional blobs. They alienated their fandom. That's why independent comics sell way more.
@MsSunhappy Japanese manga are turned into Japanese anime TV series, live action TV series (Japanese, South Korean, Taiwanese, Chinese, American, etc.), OVAs, anime films, video games, live action films (Japanese, Hollywood, South Korean...), plays, musicals, etc., but still sell millions of copies, while American comics barely sell several thousand copies...
