My wife used to work at this exact one! We both grew up in Sweet Home, probably at least a third of the kids at the high school had their first job working at A&W.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about A&W in Canada, being it's own seperate company. We are immensely proud of our A&W restaurants up here, it's like a Canadian badge of honour lol. The food is so damn good. I heard the food in the state's ones are not nearly as good and there are hardly any A&Ws around compared to Canada? I wonder how they compare. The only annoying thing is up here they totally ditched the 50s/diner vibe and removed any photos and artwork in the restaurants of where they came from. Now it's like this modern/boring/hipster theme lol. I wish they wouldn't walk away from their identity. I can't stand when businesses do that. It was so wild to see this vintage A&W with phone ordering at the tables! And still with drive in ordering! That's absolutely awesome! 😃 Thanks for the great video! Love from British Columbia 🇨🇦❤️
Most of the old school drive in ones are confined to small towns now, like he said most are modern and double ups with other Yum companies and many are a part of big truck stops.
This was a blast of nostalgia as i remember seeing and a&w store in Minnesota when i lived there. It was quite nice to see you enjoy the store and the food there and wanting to wish you better days ahead and wishing you well during your travels for the summer It was also nice seeing another a&w store still around and i would love to try it out again after all these years and it was nice to hear about the history
@@SetsStreetsEats There is onr of the older style A&W in Winnona MN. It is the even older style that has the overhang missing and you had to go into the place to order and go outside to eat as it only has 2 very small tables inside.
10:40 Man I love the Flushing A on Cherry street. I worked in that area for almost 20 years. My hometown A&W was the Ortonville location. There is a little creek that runs through the back and there is outdoor seating near it.
the last time I ate at A & W within the last 6 years was in Vancouver, Canada. Older family members went nuts lol. The locals said they had 3 within the city but supposedly it's down to one. I avoid Portland (most people do) but in Oregon, I might pass by that place for the nostalgia factor.
I miss A&W so much. Absolutely love the floats. We used to have several long John's silvers a&w combo restaurants nearby but they closed unfortunately 😞 very interesting to learn the history.
I cannot think of A&W without thinking of Snoopy! Especially the scene from Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (1980) where he drinks a mug of root beer on a checkered table.
It amazes me that A&W now is way more popular in Canada than in the US. I grew up near an A&W but it became a tobacco store. I would love to eat at one again.
Here in Canada A&W burgers are huge. Just as big as Wendy's. Or close. But I did read the A&W restaurants in Canada are not actually affiliated with the ones in the U.S. i love their Papa Burger and their onion rings are really good.
I drove past this one a few months ago with family, I really wanted to stop, lol, but family had other plans. I grew up near one in Winston Oregon, such fond memories and wow those root beer floats were great! It was not that many years ago one of the old style drive in ones was still open in Vancouver Washington, a fairly decent sized city of like 170k? a suburb of Portland, now the old drive in ones seem confined to small towns like Sweet Home. As a teen I remember the Winston one being a co-sponsor of a annual car cruise.
Have one of these real close to me in Dayton, Ohio, one paired with a Long John Silvers. I’ve never been, even though I LOVE root beer floats, and was always fascinated by it since it was the only one I’d ever seen growing up, lol.
Cool beans I didn’t know about this location. I have a restaurant just like it. I was an A&W for years and years. They changed so much so I just dropped the name and went on my own. Dad’s Family Restaurant Toppenish, Washington Next time I’m in Oregon I’ll Visit this store. Hope to meet the owner too.
I can remember having a couple of these little Drive-In A&W type restaurants in our little town and it seemed like what killed it was when the big guys moved in like Burger King Wendy's McDonald's Carl's Junior all those places moved into town and the little places like A&W Foster Freeze and there was even a few mom and pop like Drive in burger joints in our town they all faded away because of the ad campaigns that the other guys had that they didn't
I’m like 5 minutes away from the Lodi original!!! I love it there. The food is great, the floats are amazing, and YES!!! The best Root Beer EVER!!!! Totally beats the gas station A&W cans lol
Probably the best place to put this aside from an actual McDonald's video but if you're ever driving along the 10 Freeway in California, the McDonald's on W Ramsey Street in Banning still has the golden arches building structure and a Speedy sign outside. I passed by it and thought of you + your videos my Friend 💙
I'm in northern NY and most of the A&W's near me are across the border in Canada. But there is still one like the one in this video a couple hours south of me in Cortland. I need to make a trip down there. Hey kids, road trip!
My A&W memories are of the one that was in Felton, CA. The building is still there, but unfortunately it is some Chinese restaurant now. But I loved going to it when it was still an A&W. I wish we could bring all that back.
I remember the old restaurant in Racine Wi but they closed that one and built across the interstate another one a newer one was disappointed when I ate there they got rid of making them by hand now they use patties but the root beer was good
Just been watching a lot of your videos. All great stuff. I actually just recently moved to Flushing myself. And I'm sure you know now that the A&w is long gone and now it's called the flushing A. I'm up there a couple times a month. It's different, but it's good!
You should visit Lodi, CA. The birthplace of A&W. (You already knew that). The original building where they stored the hotdog cart is in the Downtown area. They have a stand alone A&W there, too!
@chefwolf77 I definitely agree with you for the nostalgic sake and the little museum they have inside. I just wish that location was more of a classic design but it's sadly been updated.
Can you make a video about Dog N Suds? It’s a restaurant very similar to A&W. I remember going there as a kid and thought their food and root beer was better than A&W.
I heard that they demand the franchise owners to stay open all year around or they cancel their agreement. Lots of seasonal root beer stands closed or changed to another because of this... Don't quote me... Just remember back when they all closed up or changed names... 👀
I always thought that the root beer was brewed (or something special going on in the back)... Recently found out that the root beer that you get at A&W comes out of a regular soda dispenser... 👀 Like any of the soft drinks... 👀
Can you please give me a shout out in the next video, I am HUGE fan of you and your videos, and it has been very cool to watch your videos get better and better!
Just some constructive criticism don't talk while eating. I enjoyed the video until that point. I know it's probably a me thing but there are probably others. Listening to others eat really sets me off like nails in a chalkboard.
So I eat an entire meal without saying a single word. But you still had to comment because I talked while eating the ice cream and sipping the root beer at the end of the meal? Really? Go watch someone else's videos then.
Imagine scrolling TH-cam and you see your local A&W! Thanks for visiting our little town!
Its nice to see the one in oakridge back to being open again!
Did not expect to see my town in the recommended videos. Thanks for stopping by!
I’m a cook at this location absolutely love it couldn’t ask for a better boss! Hope you enjoyed your time there!
That looks so familiar...what a minute...I'm literally the next town over in Lebanon Oregon
My wife used to work at this exact one! We both grew up in Sweet Home, probably at least a third of the kids at the high school had their first job working at A&W.
Hello from Eugene Oregon! I took a road trip with friends a few years back and stopped in Sweet home A&W!!
There's an A&W about 20 minutes away from me. I love how the roof is like a little hat on top of the building. Their Cream Soda is absolutely top tier

I haven't been to a A&W in a lotta of years they were certinaly BIG here in California.
I have a memory of going to one and they had great baked potatoes and that frosty mug instead of the only ones close to me is one in a gas station
Wow, it’s been a while since I haven’t ate at A&W. My local used to be at Woodfield Mall. It opened around 1984 and closed around 2019.

Hey kids, road trip!
My mom worked as a carhop at one in Chicago around 1965 when she was 15.
Not only have I eaten at the original A&W in Lodi, I also had pizza at the original Shakey's pizza in Sacramento.
My A&W memories are of the one that was in Felton, CA. The building is still there, but unfortunately it is some Chinese restaurant now. But I loved going to it when it was still an A&W. I wish we could bring all that back.
yep, they missed a HUGE marketing opportunity to go full nostalgia even more so than Sonic, people are dying for all kinds of nostalgia
@@deanfirnatine7814 Exactly. And Sonic isn't even that good. A&W was way better.

Oh God ya the Onion Rings are the best
