As Chaplin wrote in his autobiography, sadness is very close to happiness. I feel that this film especially shows that side, it is a mixture of the two, as Calvero dies, the ballet dancer performs her beautiful dance. "And so the world grows young. And youth takes over."

This movie will never fail to make my heart break. A man who wishes to be back on the stage again with thunderous applause realizes his limelight is fading, and it’s being shone onto the youth of the theater. He helped a girl get back on her feet and become a talented ballet dancer, while he steps aside and waits for the end. Chaplin thought his career was over at this point, hence the death of Calvero. But what he didn’t realize was that his own limelight would never fade. Everyone recognizes the Tramp. His legacy will never die

This was meant to be Chaplin's last movie. Calvero's death was meant to be Chaplin's symbolic death as a performer.

If Charlie Chaplain had taken to composing music only he might perhaps have ended his career as one of the greatest composers of his time. The theme from Limelight is a testimony to this.

One of my greatest regrets was missing a special screening of Limelight at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2012, with both Claire Bloom and Norman Lloyd as special guests, discussing the filming.

It was Buster Keaton to thank for the shot of Chaplin's death where he was under the sheet and couldn't direct, Buster told Charlie the timing and where the camera was. Both geniuses, both pioneers.

Something I just learned about the final shot in which the camera pulls back as Calvero dies; Chaplin couldn't be at the camera to see how the scene was going - or if he was in the frame. So, he turned the shot over to someone with the experience to handle it - Buster Keaton. According to Chaplin's son - who was also in the shot - Keaton would whisper to Chaplin where the camera was and if they were still in the shot as the camera pulled back in order to get to Claire Bloom's entrance.

I never see this scene without paying attention to Buster Keaton standing behind Sir Chaplin looking so concerned about his long-time stage partner. No dialogues at all, but Sir Chaplin as well as Buster Keaton attest to be vindicated themselves pantomime works even in 2022, so of course in back then in 1952.

How many directors would have imposed some kind of over-written, corny dialogue at the end, to "tell", rather than "show" . . .? Only the master could have told such an eloquent story (actually, multiple stories), without a single spoken word, over the course of the film's final two minutes -- which, although fittingly brief, seem somehow an eternity (or maybe the beginning of an eternity), dissolving into timelessness.

Look closely at the shadows being cast from Terry during final dance, at Calvero's death. At 4:20 she is illuminated from the direction of him offstage, then slowly that fades and she is in her own light from above.
