    The mini wedding cake was the only one that felt like it fit the $30 price point. I can't speak to the pies or cupcakes, but as someone who has made a lot of macarons for fun, there is a lot more you can do to plus up even a simple macaron.

    So a little trick. NEVER tell a bakery you're doing something for a wedding. There is a tendency to add a "wedding tax"
    I wanted a simple wedding cake. 2 tier chocolate cake, chocolate filling, with no toppers, white icing and blue flowers on the side. Enough to feed about 50.
    My mom went to two bakeries and they quoted her 500$ at 1 and 650$ at the other.
    I went in saying it was going to be my Birthday. and that same cake was 75$. It was stunning, and delicious, and we only paid 75$.
    I think the issue is you said "wedding favor"

    • @TheIcingArtist
      @TheIcingArtist  3 ปีที่แล้ว +374

      Very ture honestly. The two bakeries I worked at did this. They had a birthday/celebration price sheet and a wedding cake price sheet.

    • @lovefromlila
      @lovefromlila 3 ปีที่แล้ว +118

      Can we stop with this 'wedding tax' crap please. Unscrupulous business owners will find any excuse to charge you more. Legitimate, professional business owners recognise that your wedding day is a big event, and requires a lot more attention and detail. So we charge accordingly. Find trustworthy suppliers, and they'll charge fairly for the work you're asking for. Find questionable suppliers and they'll shaft you.

    • @gimygaming8655
      @gimygaming8655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +103

      @@lovefromlila it honestly depends on what you are looking for. If you want a simple wedding cake then just saying it's for your birthday will turn out good. If you are looking for very very fancy and high end then it's understandable for the price. If though just by saying it's your birthday instead of wedding for the same exact cake is cheaper and it's a simple cake and what you want then I get what they are saying.

    • @lovefromlila
      @lovefromlila 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      @@gimygaming8655 but you're missing the point. If you have to lie to your cake designer to get a 'cheaper' price, then that designer is unscrupulous IMO. However, a professional designer will be costing in a lot of things for a wedding cake which makes it more expensive e.g. extra consultations and admin time, samples etc. If you don't want or need those then a respectable designer will price accordingly. It's only the unscrupulous ones who will have no reason to justify why you need to pay the higher price in that situation and you would need to lie to. In which case, the issue is that they're a shady business and you shouldn't be booking with them anyway.

    • @grandy2875
      @grandy2875 3 ปีที่แล้ว +100

      It's not just food prices that get jacked up, venue prices are another rort.
      We were looking for a simple basic hall, nothing fancy, just 4 walls, a roof and a kitchenette, something big enough to hold the party in. We rang around and got prices, then a week later mum rang the same venues and got prices for a 60th birthday party and the price for the wedding was 4 times higher than the price for the b/day party... same venues, same amount of guests, same everything, the only difference was what the venue owner was told the place would be used for... it's the biggest scam going...

    That mini cake was gorgeous! I think that bakery won. They gave you what you asked for, and also what is clearly their expertise for your consideration. That last one with the truffles... Something I always admire about you is your determination to say positive things. And I could see what a struggle that was with the truffles. Looks like they really didn’t want your business, though it would have been more honest and less frustrating to just say so. If it were me and I ever wanted to order fancy truffles, I sure wouldn’t order from them. Thanks for another fun video. I love your comparisons and this-into-that. ♥️

In which case - caterers will bring their own if they need to - and if that's case, you could probably pack your favors in a container with dry ice to keep them cold for the duration of the wedding and bring them out near the end. Was excited to see this challenge. A very interesting one indeed. Macrons we’re blah..a few brush strokes aren’t really decorations. As you showed, there are many ways to decorate a macron, and a few gold brush strokes didn’t cut it. The decorations were basically the bed of flowers. I really liked the mini cake. Well executed and delicately pretty. Cupcake/cupcakes were pretty, but wasn’t impressed with the decorations. Pies…no. A fail. Couldn’t see any of the decorations you asked for. Very little to no colour. But unless you used someone like The Pieous..well you know. She’s amazing. And the chocolates..Total Epic Fail. Firstly they didn’t even make what you asked them to. Secondly, they were just chocolates in a box. And zero, zip decorations. If I had the $$, I would go with the individual cakes. That being said. A good many of the cakes would either be left behind at the venue. Or taken home and thrown away. I was at a wedding where cupcakes were being given away. Only half were taken. But I guess if you gots the dough, it’s about impressing, not the waste.

The mini cakes were all iced differently in the same color scheme, and were stacked in the centers of the tables as centerpieces, then taken home by the guests to enjoy at their leisure. My first reaction when I heard the challenge was something like "Making a sample of what you would do is not applicable in this situation because design, purchasing of supplies, and other factors are very up-in-the-air until an actual order for 200 is made."
    For example, there may be something that they really want to do to make it ornate/fancy, but doing that for 1 sample may not be possible because the supplies can only be bought in bulk. Or perhaps they are unsure of the logistics of preparing 200 of something, and keeping all of them fresh and presentable and don't want to show you that sample because the plan needs to be explored and worked out.
    I mean...is one note of a song completely representative of the whole song?

The cupcakes were cute but not at all worth the money. Green in the pie was a mistake and each one was not worth $30. And the chocolates were boring.
    I think the video could be done again but maybe they should give them an inspiration board for similar desserts. The bakers were not “getting it”. Also, I think they were trying to give several examples like a cake testing situation.

      I agree that the pies weren't worth $30. Though with the detail in the crust, even if it did get lost in the baking, they're probably worth at least $15. When my family had a bakery (10 years ago) we would sell a "normal" pie that size for, I think, $3.50. And later, at bake sales, for $4.50.

    You can’t always get what you want.
    No matter how hard you try, you get what you need!
    The Rolling Stones had your number !
    The decorative cake was the nicest even if the frosting green part should’ve been a little darker.
    Thank you, I enjoyed your vlog!

    Always a great comparison video. You never know what you’ll receive when you place an order. I usually make a little mock ‘tasting’ cake for my customers, just to give them an idea of what the actual cake may look like and taste like.

    Wow! The Mini Wedding cake and the cupcake stand out the more. So pretty! Who ever make the cake. I would go back to the barkey give them a tip.👍🙂

    The mini cake and cupcakes is a really good idea for microweddings.
    -The couple can cut their mini cake. -Everone has really elegant cupcakes is a variety of flavors.
    -Theres no excess waste.
    - And its alot cheaper than an extravagant big cake.

    I'm just saying you said the colours for the macarons were "spot on" but the assorted chocolates had similar colours (both had teal, yellow, and white, for example) and you said she missed the mark on those? And I think with the truffles specifically she gave you a tasting box and assumed you'd pick the flavour first and then have another conversation about the design. It just makes sense to me to plan it that way instead of making assumption of flavour. Even if the client said flavour isn't as important as the design, it's too much of a risk as a business owner to make that call without any client input. So it was probably like "here are all the flavours we CAN do" then you as the client would say "well I loved x and y flavours so lets do those as the favours" and from there choose design options.
    I think the baker who did the mini cake/cupcakes understood the assignment the most. I just don't think the assessment of some of the others were totally fair

      Yeah, agreed. I was under the assumption the last one was a sampler thing rather than a final product, seems more like a misunderstanding of the 'brief' than anything. Might be that the baker can make much bigger cake truffle hearts, but just did small ones to show off the range of flavours first? And while the blue wasn't in the colour samples, reds, yellows and an off white were so I don't really know why "these aren't at all the colours I asked for" was such a big deal.
      I wonder if a lot of it was down to most bakeries not being used to finalising a request like this immediately. :|a

      @@Spamhard yeah exactly! I would imagine that bakeries aren't used to producing a final product based on a mood board alone. It would be too much of a risk. I think the mini-cake bakery just did chocolate and vanilla options because those are super safe. Likely they have a ton more options but wanted to nail the design first whereas the truffle people wanted to figure out the flavour first.
      I used to be a fashion designer and it's similar to how you'd make a muslin mock-up of the garment first before ever cutting into any fabric; you need some kind of foundation nailed down before moving into the more final steps. At the end of the day, these are business owners who want to make their clients happy. And ESPECIALLY for something like a wedding they already know that their creative freedom is severely limited and can't exactly afford the risk of making a bunch of product if they aren't certain the client will like it

      @@Spamhard well they kind of missed the mark when it came to the cake part since it was all chocolate and no cake.

      @@ronisnotahuman Again, I'm assuming misunderstanding seeing as she says in the vid when they're first presented "these are supposed to be *chocolate heart truffles*". I dunno about the dessert/baking world in the US, but here in the UK a truffle (sweet ones, at least) are those little brown balls- they're supposed to mimic the look of mushroom truffles. If you google "uk chocolate truffles" it's exactly what you get. I feel like if they bakery was told "chocolate heart truffles" they did what they could with the info provided. I've literally never heard of the cake truffle things she's talking about lol. Even if you google "chocolate heart truffles" it just comes back with chocolates for me, nothing to do with cakes.

    I literally bought a box of individual wrapped truffles from the supermarket and each guest had one on their place at the wedding breakfast. It cost me max £20 for 80 people (25 pence each). A tip for people that need to cut cost.

    I love the idea of the little pies,they’re adorable and unique and perfect for a fall wedding but they weren’t as pretty as I would want for a wedding.However the mini cake was beautiful and I’d love to give or receive it as a wedding favour. Though if the pies were prettier I’d probably choose them over cake.The chocolates were just kinda sad. Now I’m craving cake&pie😋😋😋

    For the pie, maybe the baker isn’t used to working small. Pies are easier the bigger you go so it doesn’t lose as much shape. That being said, I’d just make a small plain pie, bake it, then decorate with frosting/ luster dust and/or place small sprinkles in the matching colors. Trying to make the details on a small pie stay intact is really hard. (A second way would be to cook the details on a cookie sheet separate and place them on after baking… that way they can go at a lower temperature and not loose shape.)
