The first two soloists, Mitch and Scott, along with Kirstin knew one another as kids and sang together in high school. They added Kevin, the celloboxer, who they actually found on TH-cam. and their former bass, Avi, in 2011 when they auditioned as Pentatonix for The Sing Off Season 3, which they won. Avi resigned from Pentatonix for family reasons, and was replaced as bass for the group by Matt, the third soloist, in 2017. By all measures they are the number one acapella group in the world, though there are a handful of other top tier acapella groups all worth a listen. Each of the members of Pentatonix has solo projects which are amazing, too.
I’m glad you realized the audio was very low. I know you can’t change it now. I’m subscribing for more Pentatonix reactions! They are the best in the game! They just performed live on GMA this morning.
"They all suited each other" is so well said. They all are very individual and they use that. They have different upbringing, lives and styles and they say that's their strength!
I just saw them live two weeks ago, and they performed this song. Scott, the blonde was sick with the flu, but still performed off stage in an isolation room. Who does that? Each one of them is unique and amazing. And they’ve done an outrageous amount of Christmas songs.
To answer your question, the trio, of Scott, Mitch and Kirstin actually met when they were about 8 or 9 y/o , as they all participated in community theatre, and went to the same school where they sang in choir together, as they all randomly moved in next door to each other. Once Scott and Kirstin were in college, Scott was encouraged by a faculty memeber to apply to be on a RV show called the Sing-Off, similiar to The Voice, but only for a capella groups. At the last minute they find out there has to be a minimum of 5 group members. So Scott was talking to a friend, who recommenced Avi, the bass. Then they wanted to finish out with a beat boxer, but was unable to find one. Out of desperation, they go to TH-cam, and type in beat boxer, the first video, is a video of Kevin cello boxing, so they contact him, and he says he would be interested but he needs to graduate from Yale pre-Med. Two weeks later he calls back and says, good news I passed, and graduated, with a 4.0, so I would love to do the show with you. Yes that was a cello he was playing, he has played Carnagie Hall twice, once with the cello, once with the saxaphone Scott has I think 4 solo songs, Mitch has several, Avi has left the group, for several reasons. Kirstin did an off season starring in a play on Broadway, Matt hasn't really branched out solo yet, but I think he's working on it, and Kevin has a podcast he does daily. They are the best a capella group out there. They made a way for other a capella groups t succeed. Home Free, the second best group, is older than PTX, but if it wasn't for PTX getting famous Home Free would not have the success they have. Do Hallelujah next, pay attention to the view count. .
Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on TH-cam, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his TH-cam videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on TH-cam), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on TH-cam, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. They also got a star on Hollywood walk of fame. UPDATE: They’ve been nominated for a 5th grammy award. Another Update: Pentatonix has done a cameo appearance in the new movie "Candy Cane Lane" with Eddie Murphy They are the carolers. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only acapella group with a star! Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.
So happy you two reviewed this-love your reactions! This incredible performance is even more so because it’s LIVE. The talent of PTX can’t be understated!😍
The sound was fine for me. Kevin definitely had a distortion petal - it's how he gets the electric cello to sound like a guitar. In his own work he often uses a looper so it's possible he was using one to layer the cello here, someone else also pointed out that there was another layer to it... but the drums were all Kevin beatboxing whether it was on a track or live.
Oh what a beautiful rabbit hole you’ve discovered.❤ If you continue on your Pentatonix journey, you will be rewarded with many, many new followers (we follow the reactors who watch them) and they will guide you through trivia, names, little known facts and always the next best song to listen to. Pentatonix does not miss, so it’s fairly safe to assume anything you choose is fantastic. Loved your reactions, you’re both obviously musically talented. I’m subscribed!
I cranked the volume to double what I normally use to hear this. After that everything was fine until an ad showed up and blew my ears off. Three (Mitch, Scott and Kirsten) of them went to the same high school (form 4-6 where you are) and had church choir experience. Beat Boxer (Kevin) was found on line and the both original (Avi) and current (Matt) base was recommended to them by their arranger. The 5 got together to compete on the Sing Off and won. This is highly abbreviated.
Pentatonix has over 20m subs and every channel that reacts to their music gains tons of subs. You are both beautiful by the way. I just subbed to you to see the journey.
If someday you do get a chance to see them live when they tour. It will be an experience, I have seen them twice once in 2018 and then again this past September. They sound exactly the same live and their concerts are so much fun they engage with the audience all the time and make the whole audience part of their show.
I’m a Pentatonic from the very beginning and have probably watched many 100’s of reactors. I subscribe to those who I’d like to hang with. You two are definitely on that list. Many others will fill you in on, well everything. I watched this when it first dropped and didn’t know if the sound was low or if it was because my brain is still dripping out my ears. 🤭🤯 since there is about a billion videos to watch, ok slight exaggeration. 😂 I’d like to suggest another new one. PURE IMAGINATION/CHRISTMAS TIME IS HERE it’s literally the complete opposite of this one. Really shows their versatility. Definitely hoping you’ll jump into the rabbit hole that is Pentatonix. Warning, once you enter you probably won’t ever get out. Also my husband has been a musician, mostly guitarist for 50 yrs. So I really appreciate talent. 🤗💋🥰
While i did have to raise the volume on my end, i was still able to hear you. I'm sure you'll fix that for next time. They've just released another new Christmas album (they usually release one every year) that has a number of great tracks, both new and revisits from past albums. Please Santa Please is a new original Christmas song written by Kirsti and Kevin. Also, their mashup of Pure Imagination and Christmastime is Here is fabulous. Additional must watch Christmas songs from them are O Come All Ye Faithful, Mary Did You Know, White Winter Hymnal and so many more.
Enjoyed your reaction immensely ❣️These “Unicorns” have been killing it well over a decade. Since the Christmas Holiday is upon us, they recently released a mashup from Willy Wonka and A Charlie Brown Christmas called Pure Imagination /Christmas Time is Here. You will hear more from the girl and the guy with the mustache. You are in for a treat with this group. Their Christmas music IS NOT ho hum!
We are Pentaholix, we need our daily dose of PTX. We are always looking for new brothers and sisters who want to be part of our family. From the first time I heard them on the Sing-Off, I haven’t gone one day without making my ears so glad they’re mine. I’ve been with Pentatonix from the beginning, through the first videos they released on TH-cam, to the three Grammy Awards, all the way to their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Now they’ve got hundreds of videos, live performances and vlogs showing how they create their magic. I’ll subscribe to hear more, don’t know if this video got blocked on your end, but they’re pretty ruthless. If not, it’s probably because of the levels you used, you might increase by a little bit and you might still sneak by.
This was recorded live in a VEVO Live studio. VEVO distributes a lot of videos on TH-cam (and blocks reactors). They invite a variety of artists to record live in their studios; there are over 1,000 VEVO Live videos on TH-cam but I believe this is Pentatonix's first. Although it's a live recording, Kevin may have some of the string sounds already sequenced on his cello, or possibly loops some early in the recording. His channel (KO -- Kevin Olusola) has a lot of his experimental music videos going back over 12 years to his college days. He plays cello, beatboxes, cello-boxes, sings, and loops, solo or with other musicians.
Yes, your correct... there are other great acapella groups, but PENTATONIX paved the way into Main Stream! 3 Grammys and a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Christmas is the best time to jump down this Pentatonix rabbit hole. They just released an Original by Scott (tall blonde) and Kirstie (obvious)... They literally just dropped a New Christmas Album and are on tour. Warning with PTX reactions... the Pentaholics will come... and bombard you with info and song requests. I have 2 suggestions for Christmas music... O, Come all ye Faithful (you'll be 🤯) and The 12 days of Christmas. Both are quite different than the traditional renditions we're used to. They have 11-13 (?) years of music to explore... I'm still not caught up. Happy trails, and Holiday Blessings.
I noticed that you made inquiry as to their status among acapella groups. Well, this should clear things up a bit regarding that. They are the ONLY acapella group that has won a GRAMMY award. In fact, they have won THREE and have been nominated for a 4th and 5th one this year. So yes, they are prominent among acapella groups, and there are many excellent groups out there.
you do have to go back and watch what Kevin (cello boxing) is doing. He is beatboxing through most of the song, and the foot pedal he uses is to change the sound on the cello from more standard to a more electric sound.
. Pentatonix Magic! ❤ I just subbed in hopes of more Pentatonix reactions! I suggest their newest videos of Pure Imagination and O Holy Night! Both are AMAZING examples of what this group can do! They just received their FIFTH Grammy Award nomination for their 2022 Christmas album! You know it's Christmas when Pentatonix fills the air! 💞🤗💞
Please watch them do Bohemian Rhapsody and Problem and Evolution of Michael Jackson and AHA in Singapore and The Prayer and Hallelujah live from their holiday special and Gold and Run To You . . . . there is so much in their catalogue. Enjoy every minute.
Found you from your Ren reactions, and I appreciate you guys! Would love to get your reaction to anything by Raye (especially the deeper stuff like Ice Cream Man or Body Dysmorphia). Thanks guys ❤️✌🏻
Great reaction! Loved every part of it! The only notes I would give would be to turn the volume on y’all’s voices up by like %10-15 and the volume of the video up like %25-30. Just my opinion but I had to turn my volume to max and still wanted it louder. Either way keep it up 👍
Haha, we're brother and sister but there's a 6 year gap between us, we also have 2 other siblings aswell. Thanks for tuning in Cheryl we're glad you enjoyed us experiencing this amazing group! We're excited to hear more!
@@RNDReacts SO sweet to see you click so well together! LOVE that you are taking the wonderful PTX journey! I've Subcribed and Liked before I even watched.. never seen anybody NOT want more and we Pentaholics enjoy watching people discover them! Welcome aboard, and hope you really enjoy the ride!! ❤
Sorry about that we didn't realize at the time that our audio settings were messed up, will have this sorted for upcoming vids, thanks for letting us know!
@@RNDReacts all good. Still a great reaction. I have heard this version close to 100 times since it was released a couple of weeks ago. I think it is one of the best covers they have ever done and they have done some incredible ones over the years.

"They all suited each other" is so well said. They all are very individual and they use that. They have different upbringing, lives and styles and they say that's their strength!
The drum sound was Kevin beatboxing and playing the cello. Coined the phrase cello boxing.
Check out their 90s Dance Medley or their cover of Sound of Silence!

You will hear more from the girl and the guy with the mustache. You are in for a treat with this group. Their Christmas music IS NOT ho hum!
They are truly better live!
Hi! I subbed because you reacted to Pentagon's (PTX)! PLEASE MORE! Great reaction!
They’re mostly a cappella but Kevin plays his electric cello on some songs and beatboxes at the same time.
Awesome Reaction!
Yes, more PTX!!
Please react to “The Prayer” by Pentatonix also an original “Sing”
3 of the singers were at school together.
Subbed for more PTX reactions.
Nice video reaction!
you do have to go back and watch what Kevin (cello boxing) is doing. He is beatboxing through most of the song, and the foot pedal he uses is to change the sound on the cello from more standard to a more electric sound.
If you really want to hear her talent. Kirstie, Her runs, rifts, and whistle notes, you really need to react to Seasons of Love. It's amazing.
Of course Seal will see it.
Music way to low and couldn't hear everything you were saying but I subscribed anyway. Would like to see more of your PTX reactions.
Nice intro and great song!
Pat McFee goes hardcore in the paint
Nice reaction! Subscribed for more PTX reactions!
I suggest Making Christmas, My favorite Things, or Sound of Silence
Found you from your Ren reactions, and I appreciate you guys! Would love to get your reaction to anything by Raye (especially the deeper stuff like Ice Cream Man or Body Dysmorphia). Thanks guys ❤️✌🏻
Vevo live recording also glitched on Kirsti's part. Will subscribe for more PTX.
Would suugest pop spring live or "Gold."
Great reaction! Loved every part of it! The only notes I would give would be to turn the volume on y’all’s voices up by like %10-15 and the volume of the video up like %25-30. Just my opinion but I had to turn my volume to max and still wanted it louder. Either way keep it up 👍
You need to turn the volume up I can hardly hear it and I have fantastic hearing.
LOVED your reaction!! QUESTION: Are you two by any chance twins? You finish each other's sentences, and speak the same things at the same time...???
Haha, we're brother and sister but there's a 6 year gap between us, we also have 2 other siblings aswell. Thanks for tuning in Cheryl we're glad you enjoyed us experiencing this amazing group! We're excited to hear more!
@@RNDReacts SO sweet to see you click so well together!
LOVE that you are taking the wonderful PTX journey! I've Subcribed and Liked before I even watched.. never seen anybody NOT want more and we Pentaholics enjoy watching people discover them! Welcome aboard, and hope you really enjoy the ride!! ❤

@@RNDReacts all good. Still a great reaction. I have heard this version close to 100 times since it was released a couple of weeks ago. I think it is one of the best covers they have ever done and they have done some incredible ones over the years.
