There are few good versions of this song. Tim Buckley's original is one. But for me, the version which made it astonishing, magical and transporting was Elizabeth Fraser's haunting rendition in 1983. Robert Plant's is the third. There are no others which compare.
This is beyond beautiful. One of the best performances of Robert Plant's career. Simplicity yet perfection, and one for the ages. Thank you Tim Buckley for writing this magnificent work, and thank you Robert Plant for doing it such justice.
There are many beautiful versions of this, but none matches the beautiful simplicity of Tim. Tho you can't deny Robert loves this song and Tim. This has been one of my continual favorites since the day I bought the album decades ago. I lost the album, and almost cried when I found it on YT. I'm thrilled to know it is stilled loved by so many people.
Seriously, just revel in the beauty of this song and people singing passionately with all their hearts. There is no need to be analytical about who's version is better or worse. Enjoy and love it all.
I dont care how cool or uncool it is to like robert plant. this is a really soulful rendition. the man is spot on. that's a great arrangement as well with some interesting dynamics. I wish Tim would have known how much he was dug in his lifetime.
Long afloat on shipless oceans I did all my best to smile 'Til your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle And you sang Sail to me Sail to me Let me enfold you Here I am Here I am Waiting to hold you Did I dream you dreamed about me? Were you here when I was forced out Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks For you sing, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow Oh my heart, Oh my heart shies from the sorrow" Well I'm as puzzled as the newborn child I'm as riddled as the tide Should I stand amid the breakers? Or should I lie with death, my bride? Hear me sing, "Swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you"
Such a soulful & heartfelt rendition by the incomparable Robert Plant. This most beautiful song haunts me as I go thru my day. Not in a bad way but I find myself singing it. I consider myself blessed to be alive in the same era as him!
Jeff B. admired Led Zeppelin more than almost any other band out there. He was even said to be singing "Whole Lotta Love" in those last seconds of his life. How much this tribute would have meant to Jeff. :)
Jimmy Page and Robert Plant crossed paths with Jeff Buckley when all three were casually wandering around the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Page luved the album "Grace".
That sound he makes with his voice at 5:31... pure emotion beyond words.. It reminds me of The Rain Song, after the line "I curse the gloom that set upon us, but I know that I love you so".
First time I heard Robert Plant sing this I was 14 4nd cried my eyes out. It is so moving. Listened to the other renditions by other musicians but just didn't do it for me like this version
I heard this beautiful song a few years ago, sung by Edan Everly, son of Don and nephew of Phil Everly. Don and Phill have now sadly passed away, Edan has quite a repertoire of wonderful songs, sung with such emotion, including this one, my favourite.🙋🏻♀️ but I still enjoy the Tim, Covers and Robert Plants beautiful version..
We couldn't have more different opinions.. I think its fantastic and absolutely brilliant how Robert Plant covered this song and added so much emotion!
You are precise and correct about different opinions. Plant should stick to his Zeppelin tunes. He can't carry a candle to the monument that is and will always be Tim Buckley.
When one learns and sings The Song To The Siren, one gets taken by the song, in a way no other song seems to accomplish... There is something alluring about the whole piece, its frequencies, its cadences and the sheer beauty of the poem that became Tim Buckley's song. . Elizabeth Frazer did a remarkable job of covering this, a song so suited to her individual style of singing, likewise a perfect fit for Bob Plant. Well done !
Linda Green You said it very correctly Linda... it would be very boring if everyone sings this song the same way....Jeff loves Robert Plant & Zeppelin...he learned from Robert a lot ♫ ♥
This reminds me why I started playing music. Like so many others Led zeppelin was a foundation to the exposure to the world of preforming music. Robert has always been a one in only type of singer.
Tim Buckley is Jeff Buckley's dad sadly they're...both gone...Tim debuted this song near the end of a Monkees episode...you know, the one with the "frotus eye" taking over televisions?....rest in peace both father and son...Tim and Jeff
i think robert plant is not only the most hadsome singer of rock music but the most greatest too,i love this great rock romantic with british aristocraric manners.
I didn't have the pleasure the chance to see Jeff Buckley live either his fater due to the circumstances, but i had the Amazing, thrilling, beautiful chance to see Plant last year with his theatre tour. Was one of the best moment ever ever had. He's a kind of sciamano and we were all fascinated and amazed by his voice... which recall in my mind the Jeff Buckley one. The incredible thing and bit funny is tha Led Zeppelin were the best Jeff Buckley's band. a weirdo circle... 💖
Every version of this song I have heard has been amazing. This is yet on more great version, Plant's voice is in the moment. Is it even possible to do a bad version of such a brilliant song?
+Bo Hahnfeld Yeah, on another video of this, someone commented that they "wanted to like it" but couldn't because he changed one word of the lyrics! Such stupidity in the face of art is baffling to me. I pity them.
Oysters are 'troubled' by a bit of dust/dirt or limescale (from the water) around which forms a pearl .. so, from something 'troublesome' comes beauty .. Shame Tim's mates (if a true story) had little or no imagination .. :-(
Hearing Robert Plant on recordings is very different then seeing Robert Plant at a live gig. Live there is no studio wizardry, it's just the band and their musicianship and presence. Robert Plant has had as much as anyone his whole life.
I was reading the comments while the video was loading and I actually was waiting for some catastrophic version of this beautiful song, but I really liked Plant's version, of course is not like Tim's but it was nice :D
Someone is standing at the edge of the ocean deciding whether to go in. And they don't plan on coming out again. Some of the lyrics are from the viewpoint of "the siren", saying hurry up and come in to the water (especially the last one) .
There are few good versions of this song. Tim Buckley's original is one. But for me, the version which made it astonishing, magical and transporting was Elizabeth Fraser's haunting rendition in 1983. Robert Plant's is the third. There are no others which compare.
I know right? these three versions make me cry !
What about Bryan Ferry?
Rose Betts version is good also.
Brendan Perry's live performance is also great
Sinead O'Connor's version is touching, also.
I can’t stop weeping due to his beautiful rendition
you can feel Roberts compassion during the solo. Amazing man and artist.
I love him
@@Robin-gv2heMe too!

I really like Frusciante's version
Me too. Frusciante's is my favorite, but that's problably because it was the first one I heard
This Mortal Coil's versión is something apart. Totally beautiful!
love this Mortal Coil and Brendan Perry's version
@midwestkatie You summed it up
Seriously, just revel in the beauty of this song and people singing passionately with all their hearts. There is no need to be analytical about who's version is better or worse. Enjoy and love it all.
Don't be analytical about it, just agree with you, eh?
It's a beautiful song. Robert puts his whole heart ♥ into this. I think he did this Buckley song justice but that's just my opinion...
I dont care how cool or uncool it is to like robert plant. this is a really soulful rendition. the man is spot on. that's a great arrangement as well with some interesting dynamics. I wish Tim would have known how much he was dug in his lifetime.
plants a geinus just of his tones
Who doesn't like Robert Plant?
I love him and this but I like the tempo from the original song. The guitar sounds off when it's slowed down. I don't even think it's the same notes
Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me
Sail to me

Thanx for the lyrics! :-)
VIELEN LIEBEN DANK...FRIEDEN und FREIHEIT...
sung with true passion for the beauty of the lyrics and emotion of the song. RIP Tim and Jeff :(((
deep deep version plant did it in his way excellent
Plant, Plant, Plant!!!!!! Voice from Heaven!!
Robert Plant’s interpretation of Tim Buckley’s lyrics is simply... perfection.
The lyrics were written by Larry Beckett.

Such a soulful & heartfelt rendition by the incomparable Robert Plant. This most beautiful song haunts me as I go thru my day. Not in a bad way but I find myself singing it. I consider myself blessed to be alive in the same era as him!
I dig it, it's been covered by so many great artists, I think Plant does it justice.
Most understated comment of all time.
Robert Plant could sing a phone book and make it sound beautiful.

of the song.

This is lovely. There are many great versions of this song, and all that I've heard are heartfelt and sacred. That's the mark of a truly great song.
Tim and plant are my favorite vocalist so this is amazing
Best singer ever meets best song ever - hallo......
It's a tender, endearing song. You can't sing it without your heart jumping out of your chest and innocently circling the head of your beloved love.
superb..suits roberts voice perfectly

His friend was on shore with a boombox while Jeff was swimming away in the river while singing Whole Lotta Love.

WOW...this is fucking great..i love Jeff Buckley and its so cool how Robert Plant decided to sing this ..amazing
it is by TIM Buckley... :)
Luca Cozzolino I agree, William f buckley is awesome
"Manna from Heaven!"
Wow, Brians accurate rendition and the use of the band for drama works really well. Authentic . Love it.
his voice singing these lyrics must be what it feels like to take your first breath while exhaling you’re last.
i think robert plant is not only the most hadsome singer of rock music but the most greatest too,i love this great rock romantic with british aristocraric manners.
Beautiful cover. To compare his voice to his work in the 70's or to Tim is ludicrous. Apples and oranges. Loved it.

Indeed. The sign of a brilliant songwriter is that other artists can perform it & make it their own, forgetting who wrote the original.
I got here via Paul Heaton, Jackie Abbott, Elizabeth Fraser. Love this version. Very moving ❤

Robert Plant me emociona demais nessa canção. É uma entrega com muita paixão e uma belíssima voz!
I also love Bryan Ferry singing this, he does an amazing job it's probably my favourite song on his Olympia Album

Robert sings it in the Elizabeth Fraser (This Mortal Coil) style. Very nice.

beautiful! my favorite of all the versions. makes me sad how people here use harsh words to describe such a moving and touching song.
+Bo Hahnfeld Yeah, on another video of this, someone commented that they "wanted to like it" but couldn't because he changed one word of the lyrics! Such stupidity in the face of art is baffling to me. I pity them.
+Bo Hahnfeld Cocteau Twins version is FAR superior to this.
+PutItAway101 Tim's friends teased him about "I am troubled like the oyster"! What does an oyster have to be troubled about? He stuck with it.
