I agree with this sentiment. This is a nice song and all, but there was something much more raw, primal, and engaging about their earlier stuff when Anja would project her voice out into and aria between verses. It's part of why they were unique.
Xmal don't really sound Gothic on this album anymore but you are right, most Gothic bands from Germany wanted to sound like the Sisters, not very original.
To all the haters, who call this song too pop music ? What about the Cure ? Are they also pop ? If so, you could throw away many good punk/wave bands who became famous.... their initially intend was not to become famous. nope, just to make music they LIKE to make themselves. Commercial Fanbase was 2nd place. (dont get me wrong, as my native language is not english, but dutch)
I think it doesn't matter which category of music you put it in. The only thing that matters is if you like it or not. In my opinion it is a great song, regardless if it is pop, goth, wave or whatever.
When the night lies down to rest I get wrapped in early morning light Colours of copper and purple Colours of copper and gold Oh there it is again Follows me follows and drives And draws around me This shade of wishes You tore down my dreamhouse Each stone takes my world away You tore down my dreamhouse You tore down my dreamhouse My dreamhouse It's the demon behind me A ghost with ever changing name I call you my bad desire I call you my bird of prey Oh, there it is again Follows me follows and drives It's claws inside me Like blades of wishes You tore down my dreamhouse Each stone takes my world away You tore down my dreamhouse You tore down my dreamhouse You tore my My dreamhouse You tore down my dreamhouse Each stone takes my world away You tore down my dreamhouse You tore down my dreamhouse You tore down my dreamhouse Each stone takes my world away You tore down my dreamhouse Each stone takes my world away You tore down my dreamhouse You tore down my dreamhouse My dreamhouse #lyrics
@emile235 I really, really like this song ("Love" is a funny word to use for inanimate things : ) despite the use of English and the commercial sound. "Devils" is a cohesive LP when taken as a whole, and to think they would've toured the U.S. (with The Cramps! WOW!) makes me wish it would've happened since I was catching a lot of live shows then. Still, one of my favorite bands -- they just don't make 'em like this anymore : )
Anyone who likes this fantastic song & video (I‘m surprised how many people prefer their early amelodic clattering & wailing) should check out the similarly-titled & blonde-fronted “Dreamtime” vid by the Heart Throbs from one year later (1990). Both songs should’ve been reverberating throughout arenas worldwide over at least the next decade. But radio programmers decided otherwise. How did this band, or Anja in particular, become so proficient at English lyrics so quickly? It’s almost unthinkable that XmD broke up the same year this came out. Other songs I’d recommend in this vein: Concrete Blonde - “Dance Along The Edge,” Bleach [U.K.] - “Surround,” Band Of Susans - “Blind,” The Church - “North, South, East And West,” Berlin - “You Don’t Know,” Lush - “Nothing Natural,” Pat Benatar - “Invincible,” White Lung - “Below,” Velocity Girl - “Finest Hour”
Anja was into music from 1976 and visited the Uk since 1984. And I guess German kids learned English in high school as well. The English of my German friends is better than mine.
@osharemind I don't think it compares at all, but I respect them for going in a different direction. I don't think it's a bad song really, but I'll rarely listen to it considering the prior three albums are leagues above it.
@caloy5000 same band...but a vastly different direction...more accessible and pop-oriented....a huge gamble...losing many core fans or gain more new fans. The gamble evidently did not pay off! I happen to have loved this departure and still relish this album as one of their finest!
@XellKamikaze.... you are correct many of the early goth bands around this time were trying to flirt with commercial success like, Flesh for Lulu, Balaam and the angel and Gene luvs jezebel to name but a few. Strangely though none of these bands were anywhere near as good as they were when they were perfoming their early material.
Well, what did you expect them to do? Original X-Mal (the all girl 5 piece) outlived their Hilsberg 'Neue Deutsche Welle' label so the band moved to London - centre of European pop-rock and indie. Signing to 4AD gave them the 'goth' tag - particularly after the 'Tocsin' album. Where could they go next? I think they broke up because the effort of 'going global' came to naught.
This song is more hard rock… popular genre in the end of the 80s and the decline of the gothic rock and post-punk… the band tried to keep alive in the music industry and changed it style. But I liked!
wow this is so weird for me, i never heard this later stuff, it literally sounds like a different band. it reminds me more of Skeletal Family or the late 80s version of The March Violets when Cleo was leading the band.
this song is in english so comment is english this time XD I've never saw this music video on VH1 or somehwere but its cool..and she sounds nice in english XD
I love them but this is a far cry from Qual and Tocsin. And at this point they weren't even a band anymore but just the two of them. The beginning of the end.
this is interesting. her hair is less wild. The guitars are more (U.S.)radio friendly and the video is like an advert for well......anything really and worse of all she is singing IN ENGLISH!!! It's commercial an attempt to go global. I can't help liking it but i prefer the wild, mournful, howling, evocative XMAL
gahh...doesn't even come close to capturing the ethereal roar, the magickal-fist-in-your-ear of their best (i.e. early) output. i had never seen this side of the band, nor do i wish to again. quickly, someone play tocsin and purge this neon-bedraggled, slow-motion pop suicide from my brain ! ! !
this is not even half as good as their dark classics such as Mondlicht... and bands like Xmal or Kraftwerk should never ever sing in English. German is just part of their sound!
I have to say I don't like this. It's just bland pop. I followed them in the eighties and the band split after the third album. I never knew that Anya and Wolfgang carried on with other musicians as Xmal. I prefer the Xmal I know.
A mediocre song from a band with so many great songs. I'm guessing this was more the product of being pressured by their record label as it's such a major departure from their other material.
Time passes and what is good is forever good.
Verdade!
That's why you can't rewrite history.
@@leologan8546 absolutely💯
I am just happy that no one cant rewrite history!🎉
Indeed
A truly unforgettable frontwoman 🖤
Remember seeing X-Mals "Matador" video promo circa 1986 classic .. went out and bought all available CDs ... "Dream house" classic 🇩🇪😎👍.
i fell in love with anja huwe,until now she still b e a u t i f u l l.....💘
Anja singing in English is beautiful 🖤
She is the best in German 🥰
I agree with this sentiment. This is a nice song and all, but there was something much more raw, primal, and engaging about their earlier stuff when Anja would project her voice out into and aria between verses. It's part of why they were unique.
New bands in goth movement today dont sound like this. This is the sound i love to ear.
Some do
Xmal don't really sound Gothic on this album anymore but you are right, most Gothic bands from Germany wanted to sound like the Sisters, not very original.

Sorry but i only can hear goth music, this is not pop.
Agreed. Devils is a great album and this is a brilliant song.
I think it doesn't matter which category of music you put it in. The only thing that matters is if you like it or not. In my opinion it is a great song, regardless if it is pop, goth, wave or whatever.
I love The Cure but I hate their happy stuff
When the night lies down to rest
I get wrapped in early morning light
Colours of copper and purple
Colours of copper and gold
Oh there it is again
Follows me follows and drives
And draws around me
This shade of wishes
You tore down my dreamhouse
Each stone takes my world away
You tore down my dreamhouse
You tore down my dreamhouse
My dreamhouse
It's the demon behind me
A ghost with ever changing name
I call you my bad desire
I call you my bird of prey
Oh, there it is again
Follows me follows and drives
It's claws inside me
Like blades of wishes
You tore down my dreamhouse
Each stone takes my world away
You tore down my dreamhouse
You tore down my dreamhouse
You tore my
My dreamhouse
You tore down my dreamhouse
Each stone takes my world away
You tore down my dreamhouse
You tore down my dreamhouse
You tore down my dreamhouse
Each stone takes my world away
You tore down my dreamhouse
Each stone takes my world away
You tore down my dreamhouse
You tore down my dreamhouse
My dreamhouse

brilliant summation...i cant speak your language
one of the best songs ever! what a band
Quem escuta Allein é DreamHouse é a pura linhagens.
Xmal presente sempre tanto as antigas quanto as pop
Very underrated album.. Pity.. Anja has perfect voice not only for goth weirdos but for solid pop rock stuff as well.. Greeteng whenever UR:))
Greetings from 11 years later ! :)
Shoutouts goth weirdos 🦇 💕 😂
ZAJEBISTA MUZA -SUPER WSPOMNIENIA

Xmal Deutschland, bauhaus,Siouxsie and Bandhes, etc.
muy buena banda saludos desde LIMA PERU !!!
@emile235

You tore down my dreamhouse.......love this song
You tore down my greenhouse....
Maybe they had discarded their gothic punky style but still a great pop song.
Anja es un ángel!!!
I still love this band, even if this song is pop.

I looked for Dreamtime by The Heart Throbs and I don't think it sounds like Dreamhouse by Xmal.
I love this band, back Xmal! s2
Other amazing song of them is Der Wind, maybe the best song of them, we can find here on TH-cam. 🙂
to all the haters:this song is a brilliant goth pop hit!!!-listen to:the cult,late cure,blondie...
This is new wave to be very precise. This can also be considered as Gothic music as it is similar to "Shadow of love" by The Damned.
still my favorite! Happybirthday
great clasicollection
X-mal Deutschland built up my Dreamhouse
Adoro Xmal Deutschland...
courtney love liked this band
+Zack Hawkins kinda sounds like hole in their later years huh?
I did not know that. Nice. Strange. I also did not know that Courtney Love understood the German language. I speak English,French, German and Dutch...
I still love to listen to Hole once in a while... Are they still making new songs, performing ?
no if anything hole kinda sounds like this
Amazing video, great song! :)
I love soooo much this music☠️🎧
@osharemind I don't think it compares at all, but I respect them for going in a different direction. I don't think it's a bad song really, but I'll rarely listen to it considering the prior three albums are leagues above it.

Too cool to go "global."

when Anja Huwe was born?
this song is in english so comment is english this time XD
I've never saw this music video on VH1 or somehwere but its cool..and she sounds nice in english XD
Shut up You fucking idiot
I preferred the direction they were going in Matador if they were gonna go pop
yes, I confirm, I love this band, but old was better for me
no i care too and what are they doing now ?
Anyone remember which Xmal LP this was from?
why ? Is it too commercial pulp ? I like this song..... it could be worse....
Is this on 4AD?❤
I love them but this is a far cry from Qual and Tocsin. And at this point they weren't even a band anymore but just the two of them. The beginning of the end.
@DVC231123 The CRAMPS hahaha yeah a lot of goths liked the Cramps
you torn down my WXB 102
anya could duet with Kenny rogers and would still love her from my prison cell for murdering Kenny rogers but ruby a good song covered by the killers
Award for strangest one-sentence comment in TH-cam history goes to...
Pfahlbauten von St. Peter-Ording?
Jacek Rużyczka: Yep
guaat?? (what)
... this was the finish of this band.
Agree, this album is the worst of them, but it isn't bad itself. This song sounds good.
this is interesting. her hair is less wild. The guitars are more (U.S.)radio friendly and the video is like an advert for well......anything really and worse of all she is singing IN ENGLISH!!! It's less Banshees and more Blondie.
@falkyxx-GERMANY i agree
@lgb77 what he said
🖤🦇🕷️🇧🇷
This is pop music
what happened?... I mean, is nice but ... is not Xmal Deuschland anymore...
Definately pop
Was this song from 2007 ?
Of course not. This video was uploaded, not born, in 2007.
1989
paren lo sherezade!!!!
MMMMMMMMM very pop did not miss the esensia of comiensa prefer wild wing x-mal
Very Bansheefied.
I really like more the old X-mal, when they sang in Germany, this album is really commercial, I don`t like it. But the X-mal is really good!

augenblick, wtf is THIS? Joke?
Tis good music m8. Reminded me alot of a song called "Shadow of love" by "The Damned". Just because you dislike em, doesn't make them a joke...
