I first heard this song as a kid in the 80’s on my local college radio station (shoutout to WSGR) and happened to be recording it. I never knew who it was or how to find it until many years later by happening to search for it on TH-cam. Such an underrated and criminally unknown song that has a great melody you’ll find yourself hearing in your head long afterwards.
It captures the time perfectly for me. I remember going over to Amsterdam on Eurolines bus back in the day to meet a girl I met there and we went to an X-mal gig. This sends me right back there to that night. This was a great, great band.
My favourite Xmal track... that I've heard so far anyway. I do hope they enjoyed themselves back then making this great music, video and everything, because I don't think they got half the recognition they deserved.
Fantastisch! I've enjoyed this song ever since I was a teenager, and the video is unique and quite effective. Still, I'm surprised to learn that younger people (mid-to-late 20s) who grew up in northern Germany are mostly unaware of the band - such a pity.
@David Van Cleve For some reason Anja and Xmal Deutschland never got much credit in the Germany, not even during the 80's, in their prime. They were always more appreciated in the UK.
I think they were bigger in the UK and America because of the 4AD label. During the 80's, anything 4AD was releasing I would buy. I still an Xmal Deutschland poster.
Damn, I have all their albums, takes me back to when I was at school, i had a major crush on her... I have last heard this in the army way back in 1988, those where great times, Xmal albums were more expensive than other imports, mega memories indeed
Xmal Deutschland is considered somewhat of a gothic band, though this particular song is post-punk, New Wave-y. There was very little distinction during the 80's--if you liked new wave, you generally liked classic goth, post punk, new romantic, etc. Was all lumped together. I don't remember "gothic" being a term for any style until the 90's. ??
In the pre-punk seventies there was simply no sectarism: we would go see a hard rock band one evening, a progressive rock or a jazz band the next day, a funk band the following night and so on, it was all about good music and nobody cared about labels and chapels And I loved Xmal Deutschland!
YOU'RE TOO HUNG UP OVER LABELS. They had just enough Gothic elements to be considered part of the last phase of the first generation of Goth Rock bands, in the same class as Bauhaus, SIOUXSIE and the Banshees, the Cure, Play Dead, Sisters of Mercy, etc., etc. Their 1989 Album DEVILS was considered a Gothic masterpiece. Actually, I think you may know more of the names of genres, sub-genres , sub-sub genres than you DO songs. I base this on how you have just crowded together so many specific genres. Enjoy the music and stop tripping over labels...
It's actually Gothic, pure and simple. To make such an inflated distinction is analogous to calling a car a wheel...utterly unnecessary and showing too great a proclivity to labeling things...Just enjoy the music!
“Ok so just wave these capes around for half an hour and Eric’s gonna charge at us with that bull heady thing ... and what else? Just walk around disinterested? The singer? She’s in makeup doing a line so she’ll look kinda crazed during her closeups... Can I wear the matador stuff? Yeah, I know it’s a rental... You’ll make this all look interesting in the editing process, right?”
This song sounds like a mix between Indochine's _L''Aventurier_ (for the guitar) and The Stranglers - for a good reason : this track was produced by… Hugh Cornwell from the Stranglers.
I understand, it's really 80's influenced...but in a closer look, it sounds a bit like the cure, for example. The type of guitar distortion, the strings, the lyrics, the bass and guitar lines...yes, it's gothic, a more rock-pop form of it, but gothic nevertheless...plus this band was really associated with all the goth acts in the 80s.
I just can't believe it. It doesn't matter what the video is, there's a flame war going on. I have loved this record for over 20 years but never seen any video. In my mind it was largely blue with red carnations, filmed outdoors, and where Anja Huber goes "LauOWWWnisch ist das Glück!" at 2:57 there are some spaniels. But I never imagined an underground reservoir in black and white. I didn't even know Anja Huber was blonde. Mind you, you couldn't find their records in Germany.
Hehe, it's interesting how there's always a niche group mentioning Manuela Rickers in sites or their songs, and I can definitely understand why. But it's near impossible to find any information about how they are now, with the exception of Anja.
Nossa época é a adolescência. Eu fui adolescente nos anos 80.

The thought of a 80s college Station to be as open to play this kind of thing is trippy
The diversity of just thinking fuck it
Spin that song
The 80's? That's wild. This sounds so modern. Goth wave bands were really ahead of their time.
Haha
Muy bueno, como yo ! Jaaja

Gothic rock from 1st wave from Germany, really like this song
One of the best bands of the 80's!
It's great songs
His instrumental seems like a inspirations for the soundtrack Defender of The Castle on Bully
Fantastisch!

Legends of Gothic Rock...
Produced by none other than Hugh Cornwall, I think he did a great job! Saw them do this in Northampton in "86. Viva is their best album IMHO.
Bought the record in '87, one of my favourites, never seen the video before!
brings back so many memories, I will forever love this song

Was a metalhead in the 80s, absolutely loved New Wave, New Romantic, Goth etc.
And you're right, it wasn't a problem. Good Times . . .

One of the last records I got; I love this track, as I was realising that the whole 'Alternative' thing was coming to an end in 1987.
Beautiful girl with beautiful voice and goofy dance. Love her so much! 😍🖤🔥
Uma das melhores do gótico sem dúvidas
Som maravilhoso que trás lembranças felizes🎧
For me one of the best songs ever. Thank yoy for posting this excellent video. I was looking for this video for years.

You lucky SOB!!
Anja was my love goddess of the 80's!
I played this song to death when 4AD released it.
