Thanks for the clarification. It's amazing how this is just not made clear to veterans.

Awesome man! Just be clear, your current job is further aggravating your disabilities, and it doesn’t align with your “abilities, aptitude, and interests.” Be sure to use that language and clearly explain how you can’t get to where you want to be career wise with your current training and experience. Sounds like you have a good game plan, let me know if you need anything else and let me know how it goes!

I have a bachelors , I was working a government job for 6 years but had to retire early due to my service connected conditions. I am 100 P&T , I decided to reach a out to VR&E and see if I could be entitled for assistance obtaining my masters degree , so that in the event I was able to work again I would have a leg to stand on. I was denied VR&E, the counselor said I would I have to prove I am able to work in order to be eligible for education assistance. She basically said either I can get a job to show I’m employable or they could help me find a job to show I’m employable, otherwise she could not approve me for education assistance. In your experience does that sound right ? Is there somewhere I can see that requirement in writing? Thank you

Appreciate the info!. I just got the response back from my counselor and she said that I was entitled....I had no clue of the difference until now that you explained it. Now I have to navigate the sea of options and to be honest, all the forms and research is overwhelming.....Any advice on this? I do not want to continue on a 9 to 5 job because I find it difficult to deal with people now ( anxiety-depression ect..) I need a 180* like farming or ranching or something else but I have no clue how to approach it with the counselor......any ideas? thanks!

sorry for the delay, med school just started for me and i've been swamped. VR&E can help you with self employment as well if you wanted to go down the route of something like farming. I'd be honest with your counselor and see if they can explain better where they can help in situations like that which aren't as cookie cutter as going back to school to get xyz degree to go work a corporate job. i know for a while that the VA/VRE was doing special programs and helping with buying equipment for veterans wanting to do farming, so maybe look into it!

I'm honestly not sure about that, considering veterans have a hard enough time getting approved to begin with, probably not
