    Wow nice! I gotta say after AG was pinned in the quarters last year, I was in front row and he walked right by us, the look of pain in his eyes and face was something profound. He definitely transformed that pain into strength! As that's why I'm so inspired by wrestling the last 40 years!!!!!

      @andizzyJD12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can’t criticize Cael Sanderson’s greatness, but I don’t feel he had the same quality of opponents that Yianni has had to face. That being said, people were ducking Sanderson left and right.

    • @dowutado
      @dowutado ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @andizzyJD12 This is probably a product of modern wrestling media. When Cael was winning titles there was no flo, track, rokfin, social media, or much wrestling media at all. People tend to just be more familiar with the names and kids now. The competition Cael faced was just as good if not better. Daniel Comier, Jon Trenge, Vertus Jones, and Brandon Egum. Those were his finals wins. He was just that much better than everyone.

    He also threatened the front headlock because it forces Yianni to want to fight his pressure upward (which makes Gomez’s body lock way easier because that is what you want with a throw) basically used the front headlock as bait for the real move! great commentary overall!! Awesome video!

Gomez,short build,keeps his positioning where it belongs.Cant wait for a rematch,if we get one!!Might be hard to get Yanni in that same move again,but Gomez was taking him down with ease!

  • @drdotter
    @drdotter ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is why I preach to slam your whizzer down hard and then immediately block their head, face them, and back away. NEVER stay in a whizzer! Nothing good ever comes from staying with an arm tight around your waist. Yanni did miss a fantastic opportunity to counter the tight waist half when Gomez dropped his shoulder. You have to keep your shoulders square to the mat. If the shoulder dips, then throwing the whizzer arm over the head will result in a nice head and arm.
    I absolutely love how Gomez swept Yanni's leg that he had wrapped to counter being thrown. When someone wraps their leg around yours, it gives you a lot of control over them just by moving your leg suddenly.
    Also, Gomez dropped directly on top of Yanni when he tried to funk out of the single leg. You don't have to defeat the roll but only stun them long enough to gain control.
    Lastly, I'm seeing a lot more counter-attacks dropping onto the ankle instead of sprawling on top of the head and working a front head and arm series. Any leg attack really has to be clean to avoid this counter.

    • @earnyourgold
      @earnyourgold  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm sure Yianni is going to take that approach next time. He's going to respect Gomez a lot more. After beating him 12-6 last year and watching Gomez lose to Johnson, I'm sure he respected Gomez's big move ability, but didn't think Gomez could actually beat him. Hopefully they meet up again in the NCAA Finals

    Looks like Yianni is lagging this year a little bit physically. Though Gomez has always looked powerful against anybody, and yes I understand I'm skipping right over the fact that Gomez had smart strategic technique tailored for Yianni here (he stayed VERY close to Yianni... what you do against flexible funk masters)... but Yianni was able to shut him down before and it looked about even physically. Maybe Gomez had a slight edge in power and arm strength. This time it looked more physical, with Gomez also expecting the favorites from YIanni making it appear even more like strength was an issue. I believe it's both, but I think Yianni might need some power lifting drills immediately and roll with Dake as often as possible. He'll be the pain in the ass for anyone he always has been if he can stay healthy and bump up his power. Very good work from Gomez.

      @@schenksteven1 I wrestled in Florida. Wrestled my 11th and 12th grade year. Nothing special. Got to #3 in the State, but tore my MCL and broke my ankle in practice practicing with a 220lber (I was 160) because we didn't have anyone else in the room. I just fell in love with the sport and always watched a lot of film

      @@earnyourgold stay around the sport! You have a good eye for it. Have you tried any BJJ? I was a college wrestler back in the day, and it took me 20 years before I tried jiujitsu. Now I kick myself for not trying it earlier.
      Obviously the rule-set is different and the techniques are different, even some of the philosophy is different, but it is still grappling, and there is a culture of participating in BJJ for your whole life, not just until you're done with HS or college.
      Of course, if you are coaching wrestling, then you have a natural way to engage.

    Shout out to Gomez for an incredible performance but, honestly, this is the worst match I’ve seen Yianni wrestle.
