Nice addition to the rig! Side note on the 2nd spare tire: not sure if you have an onboard air compressor or not but something I've done in the past to make space for an oversized spare is to deflate it enough so that it fits (can be squished) into the stock storage area. Then, when and if you need it just remove, inflate, install and your off! Doesn't work on every rig but it may be worth a try. Headed to Baja for Nov/Dec hope to run into you!
for a ute setup you have the room to double stack 4 tires off the rail system if you are shredding tires that much I be checking you tire pressure to suit off road conditions..
me tooo i got a 02 & 04 Silverado trucks here & been looking every where on u-tube to show & tell in video of what the 99-06 Silverado truck tail-gates r like on the inside... meaning never cut one up to see & frankly to expencive like to just dive in & cutting up the inside of my 2 Silverado truck tail-gates to use as better stow-a- way storage for like tow strap's & chain's & etc,.,.,,..,.......
Since you have a snorkel, take advantage of a pre filter. Amazon has ones for $50 that work really well. Just trying to keep as much sand out of your air filter.
You just have to be careful, or make some additional mods. Tonight I loaded: Trauma first aid kit, jumper cables, compressor, tire repair kit, and the legs to my Skottle. No issues with binding, the gear is thick enough to not just collect at the bottom, and gravity keeps the items off the rods. It will take me a while to decide on final config. and items.
From the looks of it I would say that it is strong enough for that. I was just worried something might bounce around and jam up the rods for his tailgate.
I don't think you mentioned how many days/weeks you have for the trip or what kind of activities/places you're looking for? I've done many Baja trips, most recent was just a South bound on our way to Panama. I think you would have enjoyed the driving we did and you can camp damn near anywhere once you get away from towns. Cross Mexicali, go to Mikes Sky ranch. -Take the south road out of Mike's go to El Rosario/Mama Espinosa's -from there you can drive down the 1, about 50 miles I think, and enter the "7 sisters" road for Puerto Canoas(250 miles on the dirt along the Pacific) -You hit pavement again south of Santa Rosalillita. -Camp by the river in San Ignacio then head south via dirt to San Juanico -From there stick to the pavement till your south of Ciudad Constitution. After that, you can link dirt roads along the Pacific till you hit Todos Santos. -Then its pavement through Cabo, around to the east cape. Take the dirt road up to Cabo Pulmo. -I would then stick to the east as much as you can making your way north. I don't know as many of the roads along the east side. Since I'm a surfer I tend to keep to the Pacific, so I'll let someone else chime in with those recommendations. Hope you have a good, safe trip
Thank you so much for this awesome recommendation! I really appreciate it, and will map this route. I have ONLY traveled the Eastern side, staying at Cabo Pulmo as well. I may go down the east side, then up the Pacific side, following your route.
Cool. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. When are you going on the trip? We are still making our way north through Central America at the moment, but if we get far enough north for the timing to work out, we will probably take the ferry back over to Baja for the Baja 1000 and hang out down there for a while. Maybe we will cross pathes.
It’s been great, and it’s held up great. Not inexpensive, but the quality materials have stood the test of time. The contents deaden sound pretty well. Not needed imo but my help if your noise standards are high.
tail gate storage looked nice but I would of liked it better if a box dropped in with some compartments with divider with doors in stead of lose stuff rattling a round but there on to something basic ideal was good now the company needs to take it a step further C😎😎L
wooooo 600 bucks dang it.......i bet it was only 100 or 200 bucks in steel & in them fancy knob's w/ the built in lock on the 2 of them thing's........ what r them thing's esp, called here from back bay.... & how much r they both w/ tax's..........????
35s will fit in stock location on fzj80 that's where I run mine. Also kit to run tire stock location tucked up higher. absolute-wits-end.com/80-series-tire-leveling-kit/
That’s absolutely awesome wish I could get that for Toyota Tacoma it be nice to have the extra storage
One of the best things to use when traveling to baja is Yelp. It’s been a life saver since they went live a couple years back .
Sweet storage solution!
Your skills on video editing are stellar!
Thank you! It's late dude - go to bed.
I will never get tired of watching this channel, there's always something new, you have a nice rig.
I wish I could add that to my FJ. Well done Michael, an awesome install video. Looks lockable also that's great!!!!!
It's very tough!
That is a nice use of space! Great install, and video too.
Thanks Neil! Yours is coming up soon!

I wish they had these tailgate storage systems for silverado's

Pushing a grinder is difficult and not recommended. Try pulling it to cut, the grinder stays planted and cuts faster. Great job.
Pretty slick piece of hardware.
Nice! Love the format on this video, love the others too but this was a nice change of pace to mix in.
Thank you!
Need something like this for my 03 Ram. Surprised aftermarket companies aren't offering these kits left and right!!

Thanks!
The production value of this channel is going up and up.
Thanks man!
No problem, keep up the great work.
I like the bandage that suddenly showed up at 5:04 :D
Love the end advert! Great video guys
Nice editing and music. Also like that its just the right volume.
You should have more viewers!
Thanks for the vid. Keep it up!
Turned out nice. It looks like it will last.
I like this style of install video
Great install vid, Michael!
Thanks!
Nice piece of kit, are you going to line the internals with anything to deaden the noise and protect the gear you store in the space?
Most likely, yes. Was thinking of installing molle panels too.
Great spot for Bandito Protection Boss!
stcroix jr I
nice filming and well edited video! and nice review too
Thank you!
my only question is what keeps things from binding up on your tailgate latch rods?
You just have to be careful, or make some additional mods. Tonight I loaded: Trauma first aid kit, jumper cables, compressor, tire repair kit, and the legs to my Skottle. No issues with binding, the gear is thick enough to not just collect at the bottom, and gravity keeps the items off the rods. It will take me a while to decide on final config. and items.
James Wagner my question too. Wonder how strong the lif is for bearing weight, weight of body weight on knees
From the looks of it I would say that it is strong enough for that. I was just worried something might bounce around and jam up the rods for his tailgate.
that is pretty darn sweet
Like it how much did it cost?handy for carrying some bits and pieces maybe first aid kit?
It's $600
backbaycustoms.com/store/
Wow what a ridiculous price for something so simple. A couple pieces of metal and some locks. That'll be $600 what rip off.
Good video.
Can you reuse the factory carpet for a stock look
I think there is enough space.
Looks awesome !....good job
that is slick
Great video! Can't wait to see more. Are you going to be down in Baja during the Baja 1000?
Probably December!
I don't think you mentioned how many days/weeks you have for the trip or what kind of activities/places you're looking for?

I have two questions. How has the tailgate storage held up so far? Would you recommend putting sound deadening material in the tailgate? Thanks
It’s been great, and it’s held up great. Not inexpensive, but the quality materials have stood the test of time. The contents deaden sound pretty well. Not needed imo but my help if your noise standards are high.
@@OverlandBound Thank you. I had been looking at the Huracan Fabrication tailgate storage and the reviews have not been as kind.
is there no insert for the tailgate storage? aren't you afraid of clogging up the locking/opening mechanism with things jumping around?
Not too much
Nice job. Michael, what kind of camera and lens have you switched to? The production value has gone through the roof!
Thank you so much Larry! Canon 5D MkIV I added my gear list to the description of our videos! Glad you noticed!
Surf board sun glasses good music and pot
Like the tail gate storage. Nothing like that here in Australia. What vehicle did you put that in? Looks like a landcruiser
Tony Appo yes an 80 series
Hell ya! Cargo Barrier! Be safe out there. :D . #OB538
Looks great Michael - now thinking about this for y 100 Series! (Also looks like one more trip to the store for that last bolt eh?) #ocd :-)
Nice. What kind of stuff do you plan storing in there?
recovery, tire repair, med kits. No matter how packed the rig is, it will be accessible!
Overland Bound thinking I might do this on my ute tailgate for tie downs and tow ball stuff. Great idea
tail gate storage looked nice but I would of liked it better if a box dropped in with some compartments with divider with doors in stead of lose stuff rattling a round but there on to something basic ideal was good now the company needs to take it a step further C😎😎L
Put both spare tires in the back
I had no idea you live in the bay area!
Post more update videos like this
That's the plan! Thanks for watching!
Loctite bolts always
Oh boy - for the win!
How safe is Baja? Would you take teenagers?
I would, yes, but everyone’s risk tolerance is different. I feel there are more dangerous places in California
What camera are you using?! Great quality..so much so I saw the missing screw...Lol
What song is that? I feel like I hear it everywhere.
Which one? I use a couple music sources, Epidemic Sound and Audio Blocks.
The one in the intro where you describe your plans. Cool install by the way!
Your rig is now an FJTGS 80.
I wanted this until I saw the price. $660. Screw that! Ill make my own
wooooo 600 bucks dang it.......i bet it was only 100 or 200 bucks in steel & in them fancy knob's w/ the built in lock on the 2 of them thing's........ what r them thing's esp, called here from back bay.... & how much r they both w/ tax's..........????
35s will fit in stock location on fzj80 that's where I run mine. Also kit to run tire stock location tucked up higher. absolute-wits-end.com/80-series-tire-leveling-kit/
Heard if you put a ratcheting strap around a 35 and let the air out, then ratchet down, it will fit. Don't know how far down mine will be though.
Great Job. Your tailgate mod reminds me of that old rod Stewart song, the first cut is the deepest..lolz
So true!
You'll need a bunch of cash to pay off the cops, lol.
:)
Overkill! Second Spare?!! Why?? If one goes you have one, just go fix the broken on the way and you have an tire repair kit!
Stefan Krantz I think it's better just to take a carcass and swap them over if you use the spare
700...ouch
$699!!!!! Hard pass!!!
2:53
35's big? So import.
Please stop the music while you're talking.
