thank you dude for this video, i need to do this project now on a new to me 165 inline 6 in a 21' starcraft islander. the thing seems to purr at higher power settings, so i'm hopeful this will sort out the idle and i'll have a perfect boat.
I bought a $200 carb off Amazon which was a mistake. Piece of junk that dumped fuel down the intake, necessitating a flush. Ended up rebuilding the original. I don't know if these 3.0s ever truly run well, but it seems to run strong at least. Thanks for the video.
I would like to add a couple of things that I did on my carburetor install. Hook up a timing light that also has rpm built into it. It will be more accurate than your dash tack. Also, get a vacuum gauge and hook it up to fine tune the air mixture. There is a bolt on the intake that will give you a port for your gauge. On the boat that he is working on, it is just in front of the carburetor linkage on the intake manifold. I had a low-speed bog on my boat. With the timing light and vacuum gauge, I was able to advance the timing a little bit (but still stayed within specs) and fine-tuned the carburetor.
@WhitehouseFarmVet I'm just a learn as I go mechanic. I never worked as a mechanic, but I do most of my own work on everything, mainly my vehicles. TH-cam is a great place to pick up pointers and how to work on almost anything. I recently replaced my lower impeller on my 97 mercruiser wth the help of TH-cam videos. I guess I should make some videos on some of the tricks that I have learned throughout my years.
Firing up the engine for the first time and i have a rough idle only smooths out if i increase the rpm slightly. As I increase the throttle the engine begins to sputter and die. Do you happen to think it could be a carb issue or a blockage somewhere?
Yeah that could be a symptom of a partially clogged jet! I would take it apart and give it a thorough cleaning, and possibly a rebuild kit with all ne parts if it's really bad! Good luck and thank you for watching!😊
I also have a mercruiser 140 3.0 but my carb is different don't have a 12v choke and I have two jet screws on the bottom left, can you help me out and show me a link that works for mine, can't find any similar. 3.0L 140 Mercruiser GM Carburetor 1351-7355 2bbl Marine Carb
I'll try to see what might match up its gonna be hard to find after market parts but hopefully there is a generic link that will work, let me see what I can find out!👍
It helps to fill the bowl with fuel after switching and using a touch of starting fluid and then adjusting the idol settings. If the unit says it’s ready to go then I strongly advise to fill the bowl and use either before making adjustments. And your idol is way to high
Your right, definitely would of been easier adding gas and starting fluid! I did notice it was idling a little high when I took it out on the lake and adjusted it, it's been running great since! Just needed some fine tuning without fear of my well water running out! 😂 Thank you for watching!👍😊
@@WhitehouseFarmVet they always do! You did a great job and saved some good money doing the work yourself. Each time you change a carb it gets easier. I’m just trying to save your flathead from learning flight 😂
I Have replaced the ignition system with electric and replaced the carb. I had to adjust the float as it was flooding. I have timed the eng to 8% BTDC and set the dist rotor at #1 plug. I replaced the dist cap and wires . Wires on the cap are 1342 I can't get the engine to start. It wants too but just can't quite make it!. I have moved the timing several times and still can't get it to start. When I first got the boat I had to crank it for a long time before it started. It ran rough so after it had been sitting for a long time I drained the gas and tuned it. It ran for a second then it died. No restart. So I even went back to all original stuff and still would not run. So I then timed the eng as to the above mentioned and reinstalled all the new parts. Still it will not start. It wants to but just can't seem to make it. What have I done wrong?
Honestly the Rochester after I rebuilt it ran great with no issues! The Sierra was a brand new carburetor that runs great out of the box! I guess it's up to you if your having issues with your Rochester and you dont want to do a rebuild then the Sierra is a great out of the box carburetor! Just make sure to save your Rochester just in case you need any parts for the new Sierra like I did! So its really up to you which route you want to go both work great! Thank you for watching!!😉
I have the same motor. My problem is once the engine warms up it will not idle. I can turn up idle set screw to keep it running but im idling at 5-6knots. Wonder if i should just replace the carb......its been rebuilt but sat after rebuild for a year from previous owner
Did you fog it and add fuel stabilizer before it sat for the year? If you didn't I would try cleaning it out again or buying another rebuild kit they are only 20 bucks vs 200 plus for a carburetor, I have a video on rebuilding the carburetor too it's pretty simple the big thing is just to soak it in cleaner and really clean out the ports! Let me know, and thank you for watching!👍😊
Gotcha! Well hopefully the rebuild kit will work! Also just double check its getting fuel and idle adjustment and fuel are set right!!! Good luck buddy wish I could help you on it more!, let me know how you make out!👍
I just bought a boat with a 5.7 MerCruiser that has the same leaking issue the person replaced the carburetor right before I bought it I couldn’t understand what you said you switched in the video?
I think what your talking about is when I mention I had to switch a couple pieces from my fuel line and flame arrestor to the new one because they didn't fit right? Let me know and thank you for watching!👍😊
@@WhitehouseFarmVet Yes you were right that fix the main leak but afterwards I found out there is another smaller leak it looks like a one-way ball fitting similar to a grease bearing fitting I took the carburetor apart the inlet to the ball fitting is underneath the main jet and drips after I turn the engine off It’s a very small leak but I would like to stop all the fuel weeks before I take the boat out with the family any advice is much appreciated
@@WhitehouseFarmVet It looks like there’s a fuel cut off on the main jet and it’s just leaking what’s underneath the main jet after the engine shuts off and it’s not pulling it into the engine anymore
Enjoy your videos. The stock carburator I have starts cold easily and runs great. The problem is when hot and then turned off for 15 minutes its a hard start and have to be careful not to flood the motor. The rebuilt and new Sierra carburator that you put in. Whats your experience after warmed up and restarting?
I have no issues its been a great carburetor, your issue definitely sounds carb related ,have you tried adjusting your float or at least checking to make sure its parallel to the carb, your issue sounds like once you get it going it overtime is getting dripping fuel which will make it hard to start and can flood it, also make sure you are about 1 1/2 turns out on your air to fuel adjustment screws, also could be just a dirty carb in need of a cleaning, hopefully one of these will fix your issue! Good luck and Thank you for watching!👍😁
I just put the same rebuilt carb on my 5.7 mercruiser and I had the warm start problem too. Fixed it completely. Now I just turn the key at idle when hot and it starts right up. Good luck!
Hi sir how are you, I have a 181 3.0 4 cylinders and I don’t know but I don’t get any fuel in to the carburetor and I already cleaned the fuel pump and carburetor and nothing was wrong with it , can you help me out please

Hey bud. Great video. You may have covered it and I missed it. Put the new Sierra carb on my 03 3.0 Merc like yours. Boat runs perfect but I'm leaking fuel out of carb side of the fuel line. Did you replace your fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb? Have a new line coming. Thanks
Ok just watched further. At 11:20 you said you had a leak. Was that at the spot I'm talking about? Where the aluminum piece that the fuel line goes into, where the flare and brass piece meet the carb. Did you swap the aluminum fitting off the old carb to the new Sierra?
