Tony, this is a tricky question. Researchers can attend many different types of conferences: regional conferences, specialty conference, national conference, international conference. They can also attend as a viewer, or as a presenter. I may say the average is around 3. The more social and ambitious researchers may find the time and funding to go to 5 or 6 conferences! If you're publishing a lot of research, your demand to present may also be very high. I personally thing 2-3 conferences per year is the sweet spot.
