What is an abstract?
An Abstract is typically a 150-500 word overview of a research paper’s main points from each of its major sections. The Abstract is always the first section of a research paper.
A strong abstract:
Tells the reader what to expect in the research paper
Summarizes the contributions of the research
Has just enough quantitative results
Is fully self-contained
Makes sense all by itself
Attracts the reader to read the full paper
Goals of an abstract
People will read the Abstract of your research paper to determine if the full research paper is relevant, trustworthy, or interesting for their purpose. The Abstract will indicate how technical, or general, the research is. Academic journals and academic conferences screen Abstracts before moving the full research paper onto the review stage. Well-written and relevant Abstracts will often lead to the research paper getting a full review.
Many academics will keep a copy of your Abstract after reading the full paper. This helps them to remember your paper’s main points. Abstracts that select and use their keywords effectively will benefit from Search Engine Optimization, an internet feature that makes your paper easy to find when searching online. These keywords also enable your research to be indexed accurately in research databases.
Abstract cross-referencing helps researchers discover new research areas and topics that were previously unknown when they began their research. The Abstract sells your research work to the research community.
When should you write your abstract?
Abstracts are typically written last, after the rest of the research paper has been drafted. Your article determines the abstract. Your abstract does not determine the article.
Abstract differ by field. Social science or scientific research Abstracts may contain the motivation, problem, method, results, and discussion. Abstracts for research papers in the humanities may include the problem or hypothesis, background, and conclusion.
Language style for the abstract
Search and use exact phrases so they will turn up at the top of a search listing (key terms).
Point-by-point language style is acceptable. Be concise. Short sentences that contain only one point are easy for readers to follow. Be authoritative. Correct example: “We implemented a novel approach and evaluated efficiency gains.” Weak example: “We attempted to try...”
Use clear and specific language. Strong example: “...a 24% increase in…” Weak example: "...a significant improvement in …" Consider the viewpoints of a diverse readership when writing your abstract. Rarely will the reader have the same background knowledge as you.
Abstract length
Thesis abstracts, conference abstracts, and academic journal abstracts will have different word count requirements. Typically, abstracts are required to be between 150 and 500 words long. Be sure to check with your school’s thesis guidelines, the conference guidelines, or the instructions for authors for your target journal.
