- A playthrough of Electronic Arts' 1993 horror game for the Sega Genesis, Haunting Starring Polterguy.
Haunting Starring Polterguy is totally unlike anything else that was around when it came out back in 1993, and beside Ghost Master on the PC about ten years later, there really haven't been many games like it since.
You play as the titular poltergeist, a teenager who was killed in an accident while riding a faulty skateboard manufactured by a company owned and run by Vito Sardini. Since Vito is all about cutting corners and making a profit, Polterguy decides to teach him a lesson and haunts his family.
The goal of each stage is to send each member of the family fleeing in terror from their home. He does this by possessing objects around the house. By jumping into and possessing furniture, appliances, and random objects, he can bring them to life to wreak havoc. Bodies go through shredders, exploding toys fling themselves across rooms, sandworms appear from the living room carpet, a disemboweled woman does a striptease in a towel - the possibilities are endless.
Polterguy can only torture these people if he has ectoplasm in reserve. It steadily drains at all times, but the family members drop more as they run from his scares. Other things, like ghosts and the dog, can drain it though, so when he runs out he has to go to a cave (is it Hell?) to collect more.
Once he's cleared the Sardini's out of four different homes he'll succeed... kind of. The ending is pretty hilarious and unexpected.
I absolutely adore this game. It was one of the first Genesis games that I ever bought, and my sister and I would sit for hours laughing our asses off at the action. The graphics are great, and the locations are all impressively well-realized. It looks more like a PC game of the time than a console one for the sheer number of animations and tiny little details going on - the houses actually look lived in. And those scare animations are easily the best part of the game. Some of them are funny, some of them are disgusting, some are both - and nearly all of them are worth watching. The creativity that went into Haunting made it extremely memorable for my sister and I, and it was always a blast to play. The mechanics are simple and easy to get a grasp on... my single complaint with the game as a while comes from the very last action section. It comes out of nowhere and is incredibly frustrating. However, when the rest of the game fares so well, it makes it worth enduring the final five minutes or so.
I uploaded a video of this years ago, but it was in SD, my playing wasn't terribly good in the recording, and it wasn't as thorough in showing the game as I want it to be. So, with Friday the 13th and Halloween coming soon, I thought this would be a great opportunity to fix those issues, and hopefully introduce this awesome game to a whole new audience. It's a true classic, and an unsung hero of the Genesis library.

I wonder how many people are now adults who have come to this video because, like me, you remember playing it often but couldn’t quite remember the name.
I thought I dreamed that I played this game as a child.
But it turns out that this game really exists.
It used to scare me as a kid lmfao I was scared of anything Horror related! I'd love to see a reimagining/remake of this game though. This and Ghost Master were two very unique Horror games that never got their dues. I seem to remember Haunting getting pretty poor reviews tbh.

Thought the same but was convinced I dreamt the boss at the end of the game because I played it so much.
Sweet little 90s entertainment center representation in the first area there.
Such an underrated and fun game. Brings back a lot of childhood memories. The title character is like a punk rock Beetlejuice. Definitely deserved to have his own series and become a recurring character.
The pixel art and work is outstanding on the ammount of detail and animation. Classic.
Can we get a fucking remake of this gem? This could be incredible in new gen graphics with all kinds of cool gore and possessing household objects
yes, this Ghostmaster and I'd love D to be given another try. It was a highly ambitious game for the Saturn, it was over 3 CD's I seem to remember and import only. I never got chance to play it and it seemed bizarre but I'd love to play the damn thing at least, even if it's terrible lmao.
I had the privilege of stopping into John and Daves cube at EA often ( they were right across the hall) to check this out as they developed it. So cool there is a video!

Memories. I played this as a kid. It was a very different kind of game than I was used to. It frustrated me at first but when I eventually got the hang of it, I couldn’t put the controller down.
Remenber when EA actually made good games, this was one of Them.

@@khlothostonney5760 it was GOOD and very creative especially during that era. Most games were 2D side scrollers back then. It was a lot of fun and humorous too.
Haunting is such an underrated classic that's completely loaded with personality. There aren't many games that have made me laugh so often and so hard - I'm so glad I discovered this as a kid!

I had a lot of fun with this one, back in the 90s. Still one of the most original games I've ever played. The possession scares (complete with grandfather clock chimes) were really creepy.

I thought the ending would disclose a bit more on why Polterguy is stalking the Sardinis. Polterguy starts to talk about it in one cut scene, mentioning himself skating, then abruptly ends the conversation to continue scaring. I'm assuming the Sardinis hit him with their car while he was skateboarding, and killed him. If that's the case, someone in this family got away with manslaughter, and deserves to be haunted.
+HowDoUPlay Nah, he got killed riding a faulty, cheaply made skateboard made by Sardini's company. Iirc the manual explains it much better than the game does

Mannn, I have been looking for this game, and I couldn't remember the name! My cousin brought this to our house back in the day. For the longest time I thought I made this game up in my head because I couldn't find it 😂 now I can chill knowing this game I loved as a kid and played briefly actually exists and isn't something I made up in my head.

For those who don't know, theres a game called Ghost Master on PC (Steam), which plays a little bit like The Haunting
I never heard of this game until I ran into AVGN playing it, which was like a year or so ago, but I found yesterday, and now I'm struggling to find much on it. Like, how do game overs work? Can you be seen? Exercised? Can they get used to you and not be scared anymore if you do it wrong?
If I recall correctly, the heart beat signifies how scared they are. Higher the beat, the more scared they are. After a few scares, they may run into another room. If you leave them alone for too long, they’ll calm down. If they go back into a room you already were in, you can’t repossess the items you’ve already possessed. You need the globs of green goo to be able to possess things, and if that runs out, I believe a spirit comes to collect you. Also, Evil spirits can come attack you randomly, and them hitting you makes you lose the ectoplasm. I think if you run out, game over, start from the beginning.
Of course, I haven’t played this for YEARS, so I’m a little hazy on the rules

Scaring the family was so fun. The only negative was when you had to go to hell or whatever to get more of the green stuff.

You have to go to the dungeon to collect more
When I first approached the game it was for the isometric graphics - I love that angle in 2D games, as it's especially good for very detailed locations, even if it's often inconvenient on a gameplay level; here, it's mitigated by the fact you can move freely and that great precision isn't really needed. Anyway, it took little to discover how fantastic and unique it was, the level of detail is amazing for any game at the time, many animations seem to happen only once in specific levels, you can replay many times and still discover new ones. The lack of censorship helps - it'd be a great game on the SNES too but would have lost something.
Beside that terrible, unexpected "final boss", I only take a little personal issue with the character of Vito, who looks not like a bad businessman but rather a stereotypical italo-american mafia guy.
In my head remembering back to the game it was the graphics of at least sims 2... im shocked
Some of this stuff would be a pretty fun addition to a game of The Sims TBH

The european ver used to be really common and cheap but after the cinemassacre quick look its gotten pretty rare..

Am I'm seeing what looks like proper transparency on the Mega Drive here? Or is it just a really good way of making it look transparent via some smart design? :-o
Where do u see transperency? Check out Batman & Robin it has some cool effects like transparent graphics especially on the mad hatter boss level
Apparently there's some kind of shadow/highlight graphical mode on the Genesis that can basically say "show X pixels but with black overlayed or these pixels but with white overlayed", so that probably explains why Polterguy has that black & white leather jacket, he's a sprite made up of funky black-shadow or white-highlight transparency pixels when the Sardinis are present, you can kind of tell that his green head and hands don't have the same transparency

Techicnally the only thing Sega did censor was nudity and sometimes cussing. Everything else was fine.
