Perfect video. Today, I wrapped my bars for the first time and it all went 100% according to plan. If only all TH-cam instructional videos were as clear as this one.
FINALLY! A how-to on wrapping SRAM levers. I can vouch for that unsightly and uncomfortable bulge thing because I wrapped them like a Shimano lever. Thanks!
I am noticing a lot of inside vs outside wrap videos, but most of them all do some kind of criss-cross motion at the hoods, meaning that they keep the same direction throughout. To my mind, this means that you're either unwinding the tape as you grip on the tops, or in the drops. It seems like direction preference comes down to which kind of unwinding you'd sooner avoid. Unsightly bulges aside, I've always done it like this; - inside-to-outside on the drops - direction change (with extra clamp tape piece) at the hoods (i.e. straight across the inside of the lever and then over the bars and out) - front-to-back on the tops This keeps the tape in the 'tightening' direction at all times, although admittedly some levers make it an absolute nightmare to avoid gaps at the clamp.
Nice tip on tucking some tape into the end of the bar when you start the wrapping. Wish I had known that last week when I redid mine :-( Will use that next time I wrap. Getting the stopper in at the end and keeping a nice finish is always a bit tricky
way better applying than "lizard skins bar tape wrap" video. My only note is for electrical tape. When you wrap, it stretches a little bit and after time, shrinks back and left out some sticky residue. For avoiding that, you have to leave the tape to hang for minute or two.
Interesting you say wrap outside. A lot of videos on here, even from GCN shows them wrapping inwards. Seems like the only difference would be when you get to the shifters depending which way you wrap...I think
Great question. Actually the 'normal' way is to wrap over to the inside. This is because, once you reach the tops you definitely want to be wrapping over and backwards (he doesn't!), the way the hands pull on the tops. This makes the wrap self-tightening. Starting over and to the inside becomes over and back when you reach the tops.. However, on the drops the hands tend to twist out, so starting over and outside makes this action self-tightening, BUT you need to reverse the wrap once above the brakes so you still go over and back on tops. He fails to do this here and over time the top tape will tend to loosen.
Don't see why pro mechanic's ( or anyone else ) would wrap to the inside as your hands twist to the outside when in the drops. As for the tops you would want to wrap towards the front wheel as your hands twist that direction. To me making a figure 8 around the levers instead of using a clamp strip puts too much tape bulk in that lever area, and certainly don't do both at the same time.
The reason for wrapping toward the frame is because when you are really on it and pulling on the bars i.e. a sprint you are actually twisting to the inside not the outside, and since this is when the most stress is on the tape and the last time you want it to come loose you wrap to the inside and not the outside. It is the same reason why the tops are wrapped toward the rear wheel, when your climbing you will be pulling back on the bars thus tightening the tape.
Paradox: Yours and my mechanics must be different as i still say you grip and twist in the direction that the fingers are making contact with the bar. If you twisted to the inside ( toward the frame ) it would pull your wrists, elbows and shoulders to the inside to me reducing power. It seems when you watch Cav or Sagan their elbows and shoulders are going outward not inward. I could be very wrong, i wish there was a scientific way to prove one way or another.
I always wrap the other way toward the inside as does every pro team mechanic I have ever seen, also if you do a proper figure eight at the hoods there is no need to use that stupid tab.

I would reverse the direction after tje levers, so the the torque applied by the hands will tighten the tape on the tops position.
This is probably the best tutorial out there. A lot of people ignore the crucial wrap around the bar plug thats so important.
Perfect tutorial and the nicest wrap I've seen on TH-cam.
Perfect tutorial! Unlike so many others, you explained what the extra little length of wrap was for (covering under the brake/shifter).

Thanks for the tutorial. I think this is the best done I've seen. Appreciate the time you took to make it.
Thank you! Just did my first wrap. Came out ok but I'll get better at it thanks to this video.
Outstanding video guys! Thanks from Texas!
Thanks so much - Just done mine for the first time - follow carefully and practiced first - happy with result!

Best bar wrapping video on TH-cam! All others should delete themselves.

Great video. Where can I get a roll of that black finishing tape?
I believe it's just electrical tape.
Great video, makes it look easy, will go and try it now on my new handlebars! :)
The only proper wrapping video
right under but wrong direction on the upper bar
Excellent instructions.

Thanks, Perfect. Greets from Holland
just got best results; probably done 7+ over the years but this is the neatest;
Really helpful tutorial, many thanks.
Hi! what if i wrap the tape before putting the brake handle on? thank you
Excellent clear instructions
Most excellent! Well done!
I prefer to wrap outside-in top and bottom. Logic being wrist load is on the inside of the bar so would tend to pull tighter during use.
Now I want to do my bar tape again.
Great video
Why it has to be wrapped always to outside?

thanks, nice job! :-)
Useful! :-)

Perfect.........
scott bike with specialized tape! OMG/.
Really? How come? I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference which way it was wrapped.
So wrapped inwards? Oh... I think I might have done it wrong! Well. At least one side will be right :D
Direction of wrap on top of bars is incorrect. Over time, your hands will tend to loosen the tape instead of tightening it.
"wether its kampaknoula shimano or shram" :;D
You'd think he'd do the job with clean hands. Who wants all that oil coming off onto your new bar tape?

Unless bar tape is thin, figure of 8 creates an unwanted and unnecessary bulge.
no :)
He's wrappings the wrong way !!!
