Pete's style is very good for learning and teaching imho. Too many new guitarists start out trying to learn blues style solo guitar riffs and licks and never really become musical or inclusive and get disillusioned with not having any "range" to their playing.

It's all about the phrasing. Because Pete's phrasing is so musical, he could get away with (almost) playing any note, and as long as it moves to a good note, it will sound great. It's like Robben Ford... Most of what he plays is pentatonic, with some tasty diminished/altered scale thrown in. But it's his phrasing that makes it sublime. I put Pete and Robben in a similar category, which is a big compliment to both of them. If you listen to other well know TH-camrs, you will immediately hear the difference. It's all about the groove and the phrasing. It has to feel good to be good.
Oh, and I forgot to mention... The tone! Lovely edge of breakup, neck tele pickup, a little reverb. Ah! Breaks up when hit hard but clean when less attack. Magnificent!

Phrasing! We, as guitarists need to remember to take a break from note-slinging every once in a while. Pete has this down. His playing is top notch and melodic, but yeah - his phrasing is killer.

i even think Beethoven would pat Pete on the back.... its a rare gift to hear a melody in the head and bring it to life with the fingers ...guitar or piano doesnt matter. that gift of talent will shine through always. Yes Pete has a sprinkling of magic pixie dust over his soul for the guitar thats for sure and humble to boot. John Mayer recognizes it in Pete and told him so . therefore Mr Pete keep the fingers moving and tones free flowing. Heaven is watching .

Just look up the major and minor pentatonic scales, ideally with notes on them. If you want really know what notes to aim for, do the same with the chords, which he tells you in the video. I would print them out. Then put your fingers in those places as he has for the scales by following the scale chart(s). He's playing mainly in the major pentatonic. So apart from the major/minor scale you can shoot for some of the notes in the chords as they go by taking note of which chord is playing to know which notes of which chord to go for by using your chord charts. You can pick out any note in the chord being played and it will be 'right' as it's already in the chord being played. The C major pentatonic scale is really just the A minor pentatonic as both contain the same notes but starting on C instead of A for the A minor shaped version. But its a good idea to learn both shapes as each has its own use for different runs and licks. Start with finding one note (in this case C) that 'works' and sounds 'right' then play another and return to the original note testing how each note of the scale 'works'. Do this until you find sequence of say 4 notes that you can use as a motif or reoccurring phase you can remember. Once you're comfortable with the bit you have that works try a little bit more experimenting. Play the notes in the reverse sequence, mix them up. Doesn't work? Go back to the safe 4 note thing then try again. And don't stop trying. You can do it !!! I mean, it is just smoothy time...p.s... If this is below your ability level, my apologies, but hopefully it may help someone anyway.:)

Great Pete! You're totally right, this type of video enriches and compliments the gear review content you put out with Andertons - it's all great but once in a while we need to catch up with some of your sublime playing too. Thanks!

Excellent video Pete. Just what I was looking for!
Great insight into your thought process when improvising The breakdown of the chord progressions from your backing track series is a great idea. I love those tracks by the way. Your style of guitar playing is very tasty indeed, very impressive! Keep on rockin dude 👍

I know that you could have had a very different career if you wanted - but I bet it is not just your family that is glad you made the decisions that you did - I bet there are a lot of people like me who really appreciate what you do now - especially something like this where you give us some of your thoughts on playing. Really appreciate your work and your playing!
