The Story of Apple Records Part One

  • Peter Asher recounts the creation of The Beatles' Apple Records which brought together some of the most eclectic sounds and talents of the time.
Launched by The Beatles in 1968, Apple served as the new outlet for their own recordings as well as the music of an eclectic roster of artists who were all personally brought to the label by The Beatles (individually and/or collectively). In the revolutionary spirit of the times, Apple's utopian artist-orientated mission celebrated diversity in a friendly creative environment. The result was a rainbow spectrum of music, from folk, rock and soul to The Modern Jazz Quartet and the work of contemporary British classical composer John Tavener.

Jackie Lomax was the greatest overlooked album of Apple. It's got the Beatles sound all over it on just about every cut. Great album. Don't know why it never made it. Maybe lack of support and PR.

This is what true human beings do;They try and make the world better for All people. The concept of Apple was truly amazing; But there's aways a catch.Bad management (not The Beatles) and greed always rears it ugly head in most corperate environments....

well, it was more of the beatles' inexperience in the world of business as it was something that brian epstein was going to oversee. w/o epstein, the beatles had no clue about all of these business affairs and as a result, they lost the northern songs publishing (including the songs harrison and starr had written in before they, smartly, created their own publishing in harrisonsongs and starkey music respectively which would include songs from "the white album" to "abbey road").

@@thevoid99 Epstein had several bad deals made for the Beatles as well, and as matter of fact had he remained alive Apple would probably never had existed as they wouldn’t have needed to manage themselves and were already signed to Bryan’s company. It would only happen if a break were to occur between the Beatles and Bryan. And Apple actually did work extremely well when Paul was overseeing it daily. He was going to Apple’s offices every day and when he was doing that it was actually working pretty well. But when Alan came along and paul wanted Linda’s dad to be in charge and was outvoted he kinda of took a step back. And after that Apple went completely downhill. But when he was completely involved it worked perfectly.

    Dear Apple,

Thank you for all your hard work over the years. From the day you were born, from recording with the greatest artists, Jackie Lomax, Badfinger, The Beatles, Mary Hopkin, Billy Preston, etc., making televison shows and movies, (umm.... I don't know. The Beatles Cartoon maybe?), to making the famous, Ipods! No other studio could do that, ladies and gents! These records arnet from any old studio but from Apple Records...

Steve Jobs nicked the name Apple for his company. If I were the Beatles I would have said NO you cant use that name.
Apparenly there was a settlement Steve to keep out of music.
I never liked the idea of Steve Jobs using the name Apple for his company because it was originally thr Beatles.

3:41 I'm a little surprised the Beatles included this bit of film. The bald guy sipping tea is Dick James (majority share holder of Northern Songs). Here, Paul and John (and also Neil Aspinall) are busting his chops trying to renegotiate their 1963 publishing deal, which was a HUGE strategy mistake. Seeing how Dick James and the Beatles weren't getting along as it was, James sold Northern Songs to Associated Television (ATV) without contacting Lennon and McCartney to at least match the deal. And that's how the Beatles lost control over their own song catalog.

    • @peterfriend8084
      @peterfriend8084 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dick James was a SNAKE…..shamelessly ripped off Lennon and MacCartney! BUT, Paul and the Lennon estate eventually got the catalog back from Sony/ATV….😀

I sort of really dislike it when 4:3 film, video footage is cut down to modern wide screen.
And all the worse when entities like Apple/EMI and of their stature do this to make their videos cool.
Not so much with photographs but old film and video footage. The Who's documentary actually did side tricks to fill in the space left from 4:3 mixing with wide screen modern formats.
    Just gets on MY NERVE.
But thanks for the video, wonderful footage and very interesting!

Today, most successful acts have a variety of outside business interests based off their brands. Sonetimes the Beatles were just too far ahead of the curve.

And their interests to varied for the time, today they would be more mainstream interests but back then they were completely counter-culture . Also to mention that back then musical distribution wasn’t something they really understood it was said several times by them.

Conspiracy fans unite*: The word 'ringo' means 'apple' in Japanese, which proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the real Paul McCartney was killed in a car wreck to be replaced by a clone grown in a Fukuoka vat. John, George and Gordon all died because they knew the secret. Ask me about adrenochrome and autotune.
    *Would that be a conspiracy?
