    Wow. I didn't know anything about some of those games, and also just kinda assumed there were more games made over time.
    I always loved horror themed stuff, so I suppose I was willing to overlook the shortcomings of The Dark Half when it came out. I remember it being more frustrating than most point and clicks, but I also enjoyed it a lot more than LOOM, which was considered to be the penultimate P&C game of the time, and also ended up boring me to the point that I couldn't be bothered to finish it. The only other P&C of the era that I enjoyed as much was also notorious for being a difficult mess of trial and error: Gabriel Knight, another horror themed murder mystery involving Voodoo.
    Awesome video, and I'm in awe of how quickly you put this together considering just how much info you packed into it!

    • @agreatundertaking

      It’s honestly astounding how few King games there are considering the multitude of movies and various other adaptations.
      I got the impression that the critics of the day were all just frustrated with The Dark Half because it was complicated. Perhaps they just didn’t enjoy the challenge it presented them!
      And thank you! It actually worked out really well as the video I was originally planning to make was in the wrong spot on my timeline of planned vids. So because of your suggestion I didn’t have to figure how I was going to fill it! You saved me!

    As an elder gaming geek, I loved your effort here. I would say, if you want a good King video game, Alan Wake was very heavily inspired by King and includes several references to him, even quoting him in the game, including some very winky nods to his films. Your character is a novelist in a Twin Peaks style town whose dark writings may be coming to life…As for these, I bet the Mist was the best. Text games are a blast (with very heavy nostalgia goggles firmly in place). Zork rules. Can’t wait to see what you think about The Langoliers. PS, if you thought the Lawnmower Man film was bad, be glad you didn’t see the sequel. Oof! Have a great couple of weeks, Mr Doyle.

    • @agreatundertaking
      @agreatundertaking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had come across Alan Wake while putting this video together, but decided not to include it since it wasn’t technically based on a Stephen King property. It definitely sounds far better than any of the actual King games though lol
      I will definitely continue to avoid the Lawnmower Man sequel. You have my word. Lol take care, Paul!

    This was really interesting. The only one of these I knew of was The Mist. My science teacher in high school had that on his class computer and I played the Hell outta that 'game'. The one thing I really remember was when you went out into the town, you'd come across a slug, if you forgot to pick up the salt to pour on it, it would "jump onto your chest and suck out your lungs". Again and again.... and again. Nice video game cuts and transitions, BTW. Another quality video. 👍

    • @agreatundertaking
      @agreatundertaking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! I have never, and likely will never, played any of these suckers, but The Mist does have that “choose your own adventure” appeal and I think I’d likely prefer it to most, if not all, of the others.

  • @patcoston

    I'm a huge gamer. I played text-based adventure games in 1979 on PC that me and my dad built from Heathkit. It ran on HDOS which is Heathkit DOS. It had 8 inch floppy drives which used single-sided single-density floppy disks. I think it had like 128K RAM. Each disk could hold like 256K bytes. I learned BASIC in high-school and wrote numerous text-based games like a Karate game, Robot fighting game, and a rocket to space game. Kids enjoyed playing my games, so they weren't half-bad. I would challenge myself to beat my scores. I just remembered that I played a lot of text-based games about 1977 on my father's terminal which connected to a Main Frame computer at Bell Labs. The terminal fed paper. There was no monitor. We plugged the phone into muffs to connect to the Main Frame. I played Star Trek where I battled Klingons, LEM (Lunar Excursion Module) where I landed on the moon, Adventure where I explored strange worlds, and others I'm struggling to remember. I also played a Math game to help me learn multiplication.

    • @agreatundertaking
      @agreatundertaking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! As these sorts of games were before my time, or were in their “golden age” when I was still in diapers, I didn’t have any of those experiences. I imagine it felt, and WAS, incredibly exciting and innovative for folks such as yourself who were using and creating them when they were just coming on to the scene! Technology and the speed with which it moves is truly baffling.

    I had a text game for Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when I was kid. I still have it around here somewhere, on a 5 1/4" floppy disk XD I kept getting stuck in the same place, so I eventually gave up on it.

    • @agreatundertaking
      @agreatundertaking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah yes, the days of the floppy disk. I remember it well lol

  • @Hawbitten
    @Hawbitten 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for your service.
    The main appeal of text adventures was they could have far more options for different interactions than normal adventure games. Meaning their scope could be bigger, at the expense of needing to use your imagination. Time obviously meant normal Adventure games caught up. But the are still fans for some of the classics like Zork or The Lurking Horror.
    I think the problem with trying to adapt King into game form is his proganists are often observers. Think The Shining, Cujo, or Gerald's Game. Even in a game like Dear Esther which has no fighting or puzzles the protagonist has still made an active choice to climb a mountain to see the sunset one last time.
    I think Trucks would probably lend itself to a game adaptation the best. Or maybe It. But both would make for strange games.

    • @agreatundertaking
      @agreatundertaking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The more I considered it, the more I came to understand the text adventure as a choose your own adventure book in a digital format. Which, in retrospect, was very forward thinking.
      Trucks would make for a fun one!

  • @patcoston
    @patcoston 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Imagine if they made a game based on The Lawnmower Man book. I'd imagine a top view of a lawn and you play the Lawnmower Man who eats grass. You get points for every patch of grass you eat but you have to avoid dangers in the lawn that steal your health, some of which are on the move chasing you. You do have inverters which would allow you to eat your enemies for a short-time. You earn money for each lawn you finish, which you can then use to buy upgrades. You win the game by beating the boss on the final lawn.

      Hahahaha! Just a naked dude eating grass in a frenzy. Would certainly be entertaining lol

    Which Stephen King book would you like to see adapted into a game, whether it be video, board or otherwise?

    • @agreatundertaking
      @agreatundertaking  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a tough one. I have been mulling that over since making that video though. The Mist as a modern video game would be pretty rad. Cell, while not among my favorite King novels, would potentially be a fun one as well. Christine has potential as well, and you could alternate between playing as Leigh, Dennis, Arnie, and Christine.

    • @patcoston
      @patcoston 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@agreatundertaking Cell did not end the way I expected. I was expecting Clay to save the world by finding and defeating whatever caused the pulse, and reverse the effects for most Phoners. A video game would need a boss battle where you win at the end instead of the open ended ending of the novel.
