  • Our Capitol Grounds and Arboretum jurisdiction maintains and preserves the historic landscape of the Capitol campus, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The grounds encompass 286 acres of landscape and infrastructure across Capitol Hill, including Union Square, the 13-acre site situated between the U.S. Capitol Building's West Front and the National Mall.
In FY 2022, the arboretum accreditation agency ArbNet upgraded the grounds - which include over 4,600 trees and approximately eight miles of roadways, 17 acres of parking lots and 16 miles of sidewalks - to a Level III arboretum. Different arboretums set different institutional goals that might dictate what type of plants are in their collections, as well as what their collections will be used for. Whether that's research, or public outreach, as well as conservation.
Sustainability is woven into all of our planning and operations. When our arborists prune the trees, most of the wood goes into our green waste recycling program. Our ‪@visitthecapitol‬ team also works with local artisans to create gifts from the wood, and we partner with ‪@DDOTVideos‬ Urban Forestry to have wood used at D.C. public schools. Our ability to network with other botanic institutions through Botanic Gardens Conservation International also allows us to think about conservation globally.

I miss the old treelined entranceway prior to the CVC excavation about twenty years ago. However, the removal of those trees and the redesign of the East Front Plaza opened up the beautiful view of the Capitol. Thanks for your beautiful productions and the Dome renovation about 2014-16. They really did an amazing job! Your work The AOC and the Historical Society do a great service.

I would love to get a bowl blank. There are beautiful things to find inside of trees.
