If you read the manga, you’ll also know that she’s a professional victim. We get a much deeper look into her character there and jesus she proceeds to make absolutely everything about herself 😭
40:44 She was trying to say _suki_ (好き, "I like/love you"), but he misheard it as _tsuki_ (月, "the moon"). Both words are pronounced nearly the same in Japanese. Fun bit of trivia: The phrase "The moon is beautiful, isn't it?" is considered a poetic way of saying "I love you" in Japanese, so Ishida's confused response "It (the moon) is very pretty today" was almost an unintentional confession.
"I want you to help me live." 🥺 hits different than the generic "I love you" doesn't it? I cried a lot at various points. Found out later that an arsonist/murderer burned down the Kyoto Animation Studio and killed 36 people, some who had worked on this film. Though gone, they will live forever on through their work. 💔
I love A silent voice, I'm not someone who cries easily, but with this film it's different. There are so many things to learn, it's my favorite animation.
The final scene in the dream and at the bridge is often misunderstood or missed completely. In the dream, Shoya is telling Nishimiya that he is going to die now, so he's saying goodbye. She then runs to the bridge, and realizes that he has just died, so she falls down crying. Then, through the koi fish, Shoya hears her crying (Koi fish have a special connection to the spirit world in Japanese folklore) and wakes up. If she wouldnt have cried at the bridge where the koi fish was, then Shoya wouldn't have heard her cry, and would have died then and there. That's why he wakes up and yells Nishimiya's name and goes to the bridge: because he saw/heard her crying at the bridge through the fish, and that was enough to stop him from dying and bring him out of his coma. That's also why he goes to the bridge, because he knows she is there. And that's why he tells her that they were talking in their dream, and that he was thinking of giving everything up (i.e. dying). The main point is thar Shoya was about to die until Nishimiya went to the bridge.
most likely his sister is the sign language teacher that we see in the begining in the classroom trying to explain how the kids can communicate only by using signs @ 6:48. And also the teacher and nishimiya's class where ishida goes to find her. This also explains how Ishida learned sign language. also a little context about Ueno. I think she is an orphan that lives with her unemployed grandpa and 2 young siblings. she not only has to do all the chores but also work on the side and do homework and attend school. Her jealousy of Nishimiya isnt only about ishida but also about how everyone treats Nishimiya and how everyone is willing to disregard her mistakes simply because she is deaf while no one gives a break to Ueno who has arguably a tougher life. also another thing that it might not be intentional but i always found interesting is that the ear that is seemingly getting worse is the one that Ishida hurt when they were kids. I think it works as symbolism that no matter how hard you try, some wrongs cannot be fixed or reversed. you have accept them and live with them. Ofc the movie is filled with symbolisms. there is an excellent 15mins video analysis about this movie that really deserves a watch.
there's jealousy, that she engages in the bullying to try getting Ishida's attention. Then there's the pressures around her; she did pretty well in school but helping Shoko with her notes ended up getting her scolded by the teacher, and Shoko asked her most often for help so it spiraled
The thing is Ueno at least open about it. She may be bad but she is also Honest. While Kawai trying to act innocent. She does things to get recognition. If you rewatch the singing scene you will notice she open her mouth to trigger Shouko into singing, then plays the nice girl. She is loud in classroom to turn people against Shoya and play victim. Ueno was initially nice to shoko too, until the teacher insults her reading and shoko gets a pass. Thats like getting a special treatment. Also about Kawai the scene where she shouted to the class about Shoya secret, it was because Mashiba was about to know her part in bullying too. She doesnt want her good image the others sees her to be questioned or tainted
I love this movie so much! I hate Kawai the most. She's the worst! She acts like she didn't do anything wrong, she acts like she's the victim all the time, and she can't take accountability for her mistakes. She didn't change at all. What's even worse is that she is not even trying to change. The next is probably their old teacher. He didn't do anything to stop the bullying; he pinned everything towards a young kind instead.
Girl 1:05:20 I'm 35 years old... I was in a puddle of tears when I watched this 2 years ago... and I'm in a puddle of tears now all over again. My heart 💔
1:04:00 Nishimiya is a little angry that Ueno is sulking. Ueno hates himself so much that he doesn't mind getting wet in the rain. Nishinomiya will give you an umbrella. Nishimiya is like a substitute mother for Ueno, who doesn't have a mother.
A way that I have interpreted the scenes at the beginning and end with the darkness with the figures in it is this. What if Ishida did actually jump in the beginning/was still comatose from catching Nishimiya, and that's him "heading toward the light," so to speak? Basically, the "it's all a dream" angle
If you are wondering about what happened when shoyas mom went to see shokos mom. She ripped her earlobe as a punishment for all the bullying shoko had to endure thanks to shoya
Wonderful reaction to one of my favorite films. I cried too, watching this masterpiece. May I suggest another movie of similar style. Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. Not as sad, but has some feel good moments in it. The Girl Who Lept Through Time is great too!
Recently watched the live action film it was better than I expected since live action can be hit or miss. Stumbled on to the live action version finding the live action March Comes in like a Lion.
I BAWLED on my first time watching A Silent Voice and I cry everytime I rewatch it. Something interesting I saw about A Silent Voice is that "The silent voice wasn't Shouko, it was Shoya"
I wouldn't recommend that thing to anyone😂😂😂. It's beyond depressing I haven't even watched a single reaction to that movie from anyone. I love that movie sm i couldn't watch it again
Oof. This movie was tough, very gut-wrenching. Makes me think about how I treated others at that age, how I acted in a group. I don't think I was a bully but there are times that I regret doing nothing.

the homeroom teacher that didn't f-in care was the main problem. on top of that, ueno who loved ishida the wrong way makes things get more complicated. also kawai is worth hated for being so fake hahaha
Babe I hope you're alright after watching this. When you've got the energy maybe consider watching "Your lie in April" Make sure you watch some light hearted animes before that though or get some grief counseling 😁
First reaction to this I've seen that actually used the right/good version of the subs! All the others I've seen who watched it subbed are using some other version of the subs that are really poorly translated and leads to a ton of misunderstandings.
@@samuelmartinez6344 I'm not sure exactly which platforms use which version of the subs, but the telltale sign to look for is that Shouko's subs are slurred/misspelled in the good version; the spelling of the words is what you would hear when listening to her rather than being properly spelled words that are perfectly legible. In the poorly translated version, her subs are perfectly legible with everything spelled properly. Another big one to look for is near the end, Shoya's line "I want you to help me live" is completely different in the other version and changes the entire meaning of that whole scene.
@@Californ1a The one I watched didn't have slurred/misspelled translations of Shoko's lines. The Shoya line, I'd have to find it since I don't remember which scene it's on, but what was the translated line in the good dub?
@@samuelmartinez6344 No idea about the dub. In some versions of the poorly translated subs, the line is translated to "I want to help you live" rather than "I want you to help me live" - that's not in all the poorly translated ones though, many of them get that line right but there are other lines that are wrong. The easiest way to tell it's the right version is from Shoko's slurred subs, that's what I always look for, since other individual lines might be slightly different between various translations, but the version with the slurred subs has the most accurate translations.
@@Californ1a I'll have to just search around then. I will say that in the Spanish dub I found here on TH-cam, it did show a little more translations than the one I watched. Little details like what was said on the chalkboard before Shoya erased it, what was said on the journals, the classroom tags above the classroom doors, etc. (Plus, the Spanish dub was free and shown in its in entirety, perfect for showing my parents, who are in their early 60s and not anime fans, this movie and surprisingly liking it a lot!)

Definitely
The only bully in this movie who didn't change at all.
