- Ignore my shaky thumbs -- I didn't stabilize much of this footage.
The Runcam Thumb 2 is a surprisingly affordable and capable 4K video camera which (finally) offers frame-rates of up to 60FPS at 4K resolution.
pros:
- can provide very nice video
- ND filters are available
- affordable
- relatively lightweight
- good optics means minimal lens flares
cons:
- no manual shutter or ISO settings
- SD card placement is a nuisance
- good optics means minimal lens flares (if you want them)
- they only give you one power cable (we want more!)
Bottom line: This was sent for review but I most definitely would buy one at the current price-point ($99.99 at time of review).

🥰Thanks a lot for your video and comments! We released both a new firmware and new version of App to support ISO and shutter speed
Excellent customer service Runcam!
Wow, this is what one should expect, @RunCam I will pick you for my next action camera!!
Anything else the firmware improves? Is colour profile on the backlog for future releases?
I hope you can also release a version with built-in battery so we could also use it on non fpv video coverage.. 😊
is there any chance you can tell us what fov the thumb 2 has?
I'm glad to see you're still kicking flying and making great videos😊
Good to see you flying again!
Fantastic flying and review, Bruce! 😃
Really interesting little camera indeed!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks for the review - was just looking at this and wondering if I should purchase it or not.
Great to see you
Bruce, you've endangered an innocent Tractor.....Great review though M8.....😀😀😏🇬🇧
Yes, I'm told it needed an oil-change after that encounter :-)
That was a magnificent magnolia tree, the blooms were sensational
Seems like there is already a new firmware available with added ISO and shutter settings
Having the sd card hidden by the mount is a good thing, i think. So in crashes etc, the card wont get lost. If i'm doing a big file transfer then it's not a biggie to remove the camera to extract the card.
Also, great to see you again Bruce!
Haha! Nailed that landing, Bruce! 😁
Glad you bothered to review the thumb 2. I'm going to try one of these. I hate how my Caddx Peanut requires an app to offload video. It takes nice video and the app is fine but I cannot get USB transfer to work.
Good Review.
Great Background Music Bruce.... I keep weaving my head trying not to get hit in the head by those Trees and branches...
Thanks for the review! I have a RC Thumb Pro-w. I've been trying to pick new 4k camera. Watching so many videos my eyes are dry. I came across the some RC Hybrid 2. Is it me, is the quality far clearer on the RC Hybrid than the RC Pro-w and the thumb 2? They both look muddy to me.
great review, thanks Bruce! Can you tell what FOV the camera has? The previous Pro v2 extended the fov to 155°, i hope this is what this one has as well.
What about video out via usb c and connect it to fc or vtx? It's possible to fly on this like digital video systems? What about delay? I like your footages, can you send raw of them? Maybe google drive etc...
Thanks for the review.
I have a question. Is it okay to pair this camera with a 1S battery for a small FPV drone?
Acabo de comprar una y estoy esperando a que llegue
Sabe que tiempo tiene de grabación máxima
Interesting. Thank you.
I saw Arnold hiding behind under to pine tree.
Oh no... that means I'll have to pay his appearance fee. There goes the $2.35 I was going to make through the ads on this video :-)
What about the new gopro hero ? It costs 200 usd and is finally lighter with 86g.
The GoPro Hero only does 30FPS at 4K... WTF GoPro? The Thumb is half the price for twice the frame rate (if frame rate is important to you)
now that i bought one lets watch some reviews lol
anyone found out what fov it has is it bigger than from the thumb pro?
Thumbs up Bruce
I bought one. I made some tests. And I must say that I am very disappointed. The whites are systematically crushed when the blacks are not. It is almost impossible to have a good picture without sacrificing details in the shadows using a strong ND filter and set fixed ISO.
just ordered the cam and wanted to klick to your affiliate link and then the notification (no affiliate). Maybe you should add a by me a coffee button below the no affiliate link.
respekt
By saying you'd spend $100 on this, I assume you're speaking for the US audience. $165AUD with the ND kit here in Australia so $178NZD for you.
Yeah, given that the vast majority of YT consumers are US-based i use US dollars as the "international currency" of purchase.
Hope that you had permission to fly from the local commie council !
:-O Permission? Sorry, that page is missing from my dictionary :-)
I have mine on order for the first shipment, I thought it was worth a punt as the Thumb Pro is okayish (Gyroflow stabilisation excepted). The Runcam app on my phone has already updated and I'm glad that the ISO and Shutter controls are now available there. Just need the camera now :).
You have so many amazing fields to fly in. A park flyers dream
RunCam Thumb 2 Firmware V1.1.0:
1. New Settings: ISO and shutter
2. IQ update
3. Other bugs
What's the Thumb 2's FOV? Can't find any info.
EDIT: Asked RunCam... 152° FOV
Thanks Bruce! I just ordered one!! ☝️
Hi Bruce, Great video and review of the RunCam Thumb 2, I purchased two cameras last year. They were the Thumb v1 and Orange 5, I wish I purchased the Thumb 2, because I really like the v1 Thanks again
great review, seems good as
Is there a way to be used as standalone camera (like a gopro) without a RC? Even for setup...
I wish RunCam can also release a version with built-in battery so we could also use it on high speed Rc, bicycle ride, and other video recording scenarios of everyday life.. 😊.
This is by far the most in depth review of the Thumb 2. Thanks for the clips with the ND Filters on.
Sharp yet smeary. Cannot describe it, lacks a sharpness to it. otherwise lovely.
Just to let you know if you go on the app you can set the shutter and ISO but you have to go to the general tab, very confusing because the other cameras have those settings in the video tab. Hopefully that helps you or maybe it was an update since this video was posted.
Appreciate that.... Great review
Dang that's a beefy little camera, I wasn't expecting it to be so much larger than the Thumb Pro!
Good news, shutter speed option appeared in the last runcam app version!
Order placed..2 to 4 weeks👍
Welcome back Bruce :)
Why do you never do fixed wing content anymore?
Lack of an area suitable for fixed-wing flying :-(
I bought the Thumb Pro W 4k months and months ago, but still haven't really used it beyond general testing of settings to try and find what works best for me. (intention is/was to use it as helmet cam during airsoft games)
How are you finding the new model versus the one I have?
Is there less to do in Gyroflow in order to get reasonable stable results?
Gyroflow seems to work pretty well with the Thumb2 and the 60FPS is definitely better than 30FPS for fast-moving action.
Still looks like the same problems as the older thumb's with low dynamic range and a lot of jitter but the biggest issue was how bad the gyro was making it hard to use with gyroflow. Have you tried stabilizing this footage?
Yes, you can see that I've labeled the stabilized footage in this video.
You can't use the camera as webcam thru USB? That worked with Thumb Pro. That would definitely be a thing they need to enable.
Yes, it has webcam ability (although I didn't test it) -- which is why I suggested that they should build a live-view capability into the Runcam App to help with choosing ND filters and adjusting the EV/contrast etc.
@@RCModelReviews ah yes, in the app. I missed that part. Would make sense yes. Wouldn't mind if you could also change settings directly then as well.
So would you choose this over a naked go pro hero8?
Given the price difference I would, unless you want absolute best "cinematic" footage. For your average quad where you just want some good crisp 4K footage of your flying at 60FPS it's a pretty good value equation but if you want absolute best quality you'll have to pay several times more for a GoPro or Insta.
@@RCModelReviews I mean with a firmware update that would add colour profile, locked ISO and shutter speed we might have a contender
