@@abandonstrings that's a 3d movie. It would be far more watchable than w/e shitty 24 fps you were probably hoping for. Any time I see 3d movies now below 60 fps i cringe especially as a gamer who enjoys higher frame rates.
How uncultured swines can still prefer frame rates intended for cinema theatres from half a century ago before digital images were even a thing is beyond me. Symptom of people getting set in their ways and refusing to change more than anything.

Thank you so much for doing this episode! This is a setting that I noticed on a lot of peoples' new tvs back in the early 2000's when they showed it off and I was like..."what's wrong with the picture? everything looks so 'fake"...and so many people were like, I don't see what you're talking about, it looks better. For people that do like smooth motion there is a program for the PC to do frame interpolation for you. It's Called Smooth Video Playback. www.svp-team.com/

@@STE41k I have a 144hz framerate and I fucking despise when the frames are interpolated, especially when it's something animated, because everything looks weightless and like everything is flying, not to mention when there are a lot of artifacts. @@STE41k
No! Interpolated frames look like ass. I'd wager 99% of PC gamers would not like this feature at all. Why have a fake one when your hardware and display can push the REAL frame rate?
I've been PC gaming for 13 years and the motion smoothing TVs produce is the fakest, worst "smoothness" I've ever seen. This is because it is NOT the true frame rate of the source video. Most broadcast TV and content to stream is either going to be 30 or 60 fps. Fake frames are inserted (interpolated) to create the illusion of smoother motion, but the effect is so choppy and horrible looking.
The TV can't decide which parts to interpolate or leave alone, which creates a stuttering mess of the picture. We had a TV with this motion smoothing and even with it off, it still looked like crap. Motion Smoothing is the worst thing to ever come to TVs.

The effect really isnt noticeable side by side on youtube, but my god does it look horrible on a big screen. I'm glad I finally know the name of the it. Why in God's name would you ever want every TV show and movie you watch to look like it was filmed on a camcorder?

    • @clover_network
      @clover_network 4 ปีที่แล้ว +40

aibohphobe Because 24fps is a very low frame rate that loses a lot of detail in moves and actions of the characters.
The Sony's TVs has this (called MotionFlow) and they do a very good job at interpolating frames.
If you interpolate a movie with proper software and optimizations (like with the program Hybrid), you'll see that movies with fight scenes, fast movements, etcetera will have a better looking and a more pleasant look for the eye.

With some movies and games this feature doesn’t have a negative effect, but some other games and films it has a bad effect! RDR2 is one game it makes a blur look around the characters when moving fast (when turned off the game looks good again and is fine enough either way) also one film is grease that it makes that blur effect around the person and streaks on screen at times when Cam moves fast, but if you turn it off it fixes it, sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad just depends on the game and film you use it with.

they didnt develop frame interpolation because of the 3:2 pull down judder on 60hz displays.. because technically a 120hz display can display 24fps evenly.. the main reason was because of the image persistence motion blur cause by sample and hold on lcds.. higher frame rates can reduce the time a frame is held on screen. resulting in less motion blur..

You would think the solution would just be that since we have 120hz now, they could just display 24p without any “in between” frames. But I guess with that solution we now have people complaining about stutter. Maybe they could just slightly fade the frames in and out to lessen the harshness. But yeah for me, the problem has been that LCD has just smeared the hell out of content for years, and people want to put a bandaid on it by trying to artificially add frames. It just doesn’t look right. Even when done well, you have things like shutter speed to worry about, so the image can still very wildly as action picks up.

I think it comes down to what people are used to. If weird visual skipping is what people are accustomed to, any deviation from it will be perceived as bad. It's the same reason people have raised a stink about theaters showing films shot at higher-than-usual FPS. (To be fair, not saying motion smoothing is necessarily the best approach to correcting this. I prefer 60 fps too... only when it's shot at 60 fps. i play games on my new T.V and it looks just as good as my old when when it's off. if i hook my PC up to it it looks amazing because my PC can render 60 fps

Isn't motion smoothing basically what 60fps or higher does on videos intended for 24-30fps? 🤔

2016 ish, watching the new GoT season at a friend's house with his new TV.
I instantly knew something was VERY VERY wrong but couldn't quite describe it.

I have a Samsung 60 inch and turned off the Motion thing and all other features and I am still getting some new shows on Prime and Netflix looking like a soap opera or live.
    What more can I do?
    Thx
