What an odd and fantastic piece of history. Thanks for documenting this! Years ago I was able to see an original set (top and bottom w/ springs) of dentures and the robe President Washington was wearing when he passed. They were on display at the Huntington Museum in Southern California. They were part of a traveling history tour of George Washington artifacts. I believe the items are now located at Mount Vernon.
I learned as a kid that he never smiled to show his teeth because he felt people would remember him just for that. But I always thought they were made of wood. I didn't know that some were ivory and human teeth
You glossed over the fact that teeth were pulled by FORCE from slaves. The aunts weren't persuaded but were coerced into giving up the items. History is really told the 'winners' I guess.
RE: The Watch. The KEY (at 2:31)was for winding the watch, not to get into the back of the watch. This was before watches wound with a crown and stem permanently affixed. I have owned a number of early key wound watches,

@Bobbyjustbobby You can’t nicely ask someone to be a slave. It’s inherently violent. So really the point you’re making is neither here nor there. They’re all bad, varying degrees of cruelty. All cruel.
@Bobbyjustbobby first of all you're going by what you heard you weren't there something can be well-documented and be totally false and second of all owning someone else to do labor is not okay no matter if you treat them good or bad slavery in general is bad
@@McBeas1 I'm replying to a 2 years old comment but well... It is what it is. No, teeth did not look like this in general just becaue it was X era and they didn't look like this for everyone, they looked like this because of genetical issues, lack of healthcare, lack of hygiene and specific eating habits. There were many people at the time with great teeth.
Oh wow. Musta been around '72, My Mom and I walked down a few blocks from our home to some museum/library she knew about. It was in East Harlem toward 5th ave; a medical thing of sorts. The curator/librarian was so nice that we came, she asked if we'd like to see George's tooth... came out a few minutes later with what looks an awful lot like that tooth you have there. Wonder if it's the same. I vaguely remember it being incased in some kind of metal framed glass case... if memory serves me correctly
Would he not be embarrassed to know people 200+ years in the future would be looking at his dentures? I read he was very insecure about his dental problems and it makes me feel kinda bad the way his bad teeth are so well-known through the ages.
I am 35 and although I try i've already lost a whole tooth Well Washington lost most of his by 30 so that gives me some confidence... Then again it is 2020, not 1790
Dustin Matthews please just shut the fuck up, I’m not even going to both correcting every single false point you tried to make. You’re an idiot, go educate yourself on REAL history
Dustin Matthews you actually do sound stupid asf lmfao. Please for the love of all that’s good just do some research, it’ll open your eyes to a lot that has gone and and that is still going on
@@mr.matthews67 Very well said. It sucks that racism is still a topic of discussion in 2020 when America fought so hard to rid the country of systemic racism. Everyone is equal in the eyes of God and the law, but those who deem themselves victims shall fall to the narrative of systemic racism. It's time to move on from that mentality.

Rip GEROGE.... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Why do you have his teeth
I didn't think I was interested in this but the title grabbed me and the video was actually really interesting. Well done guys!
Thanks! :)
Agreed. This was unexpectedly fascinating.
Give me back my teeth.
YES SIR PRESIDENT LOL
Hes now zombie Washington
You mean "gif me back my teef"
😂😂😂
There is a imposter among us
dentist just carried around his last tooth like a trophy, huh?
I mean, it's the 1st president. He probably wanted something of his to remember. He just happened to be his dentist lol

Alway great educational and informative information on Atlas Obscura. 🥰
Shucks! Thanks, Kymberly!
What kind of dentist carries a keychain of the president’s tooth!? 🤣
Just...wow......what we take for granted Today was extremely out of reach 250 yrs ago.

Interesting. My mom's family used to have an old tabletop clock that was wound using a key as well.

Paid his slaves for teeth?
Paid sounds dubious
Like they could say no.
@Bobbyjustbobby How ok would someone have to treat you for you to be a slave?
@Offensive man They could not. What do you think slavery is? You have no autonomy over your body.

Those dental tools could strike fear into the strongest men.

bruh at that time that was like hundreds of years ago ofc the teeth would look like that

Why are Washington’s items or artifacts soo scarce and they have so little of them ?
I never knew this was right down the street from where I live. I'll have to pay those teeth a visit
How they hold the dentures down in the mouth
Thanks for this video. I am a descendant of Dr. John Greenwood.
Wow wow 😮😅❤
Such a well done and interesting video, but please turn down the music. Thanks!

This is awesome, Thank you so much for posting this
That’s funny, they wanted to hand down the keys to men in the family. As soon as it got to women they gave it to a museum lmao
The women donated it because of that very reason.

Washington didn’t have access of modern oral medicine
once you loose one, you will loose the rest. its like a line of dominos. once one goes youre f'ked!
Music should not be playing Its loud and difficult to hear her talk
Legend has it that the upper denture is where the fun is 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you You Tube University
The Library Company of Philadelphia has a set of dentures that belonged to George Washington.
Good to know! Is it the whole set of dentures? We were under the impression that the only full complete set was at the Mount Vernon Estates!
Anyone else here from Shane Gillis looking for Washington’s donkey teeth? 😂
Greenwood sounds like his lover. Would make sense

Imagine playing around with a dead man’s teeth…
Today on where quarantine on youtube will take me
Why would someone carry around someone elses tooth? Seems a little creepy.
Imagine if you caught your dentist with one of your teeth on his key chain... would you be cool with it? Is this a normal thing for dentists to do?
That is not a "key to get into the back of the watch", that is used to wind the watch.
I read the title as *“gorgeous Washington’s last tooth”*
It is...
i literally got an invisalign as before this 💀
Funny, because George Washington had false teeth made from mahogany wood
fun fact george washington last words is tis well
I'm pretty sure his last words were "don't show anyone my teeth when I'm gone"
The first mf to rock grillz
The guy who made the teeth put his name on them….👀
Why doesn't she look at the camera half the time?? Weird camera work.
hey I don't think I gave u permission to show my teeth.
Untold history comes alive.
So I guess George didn't eat many jawbreakers then.
I didn't know he had teeth made from bone and stuff..I was told his teeth was wooden
He stole teeth from his slaves
“He paid his slaves for their teeth” .........give me a fkn break already😂🤒🤒😂
When he shouted at his slaves- they gave him a mouthfull back......or did they?
Maybe they'll clone Washington with his tooth someday
Washington had grills
The Tooth that may bring back Washington.
Lol 😂 I snap my fingers to jog my memory... Maybe it's learned behavior.
Cant believe a teeth is older than me
So does this mean George Washington is dust now?

she contradicted herself. first you said he became his dentist is early 1800’s but at 2:00 u said he pulled his tooth
She said Greenwood became a dentist in the late 18th century, not the 1800's.

National Treasure in NYC
One thing I'm curious about is where exactly the myth of Washington's wooden teeth began. That's an odd myth.

Cool
Did he get anything from the 🦷 🧚♂️
Wait did you just steal his tooth
dose this mean we can clone Washington?!
Oh God......
I doubt that he paid his slaves for their teeth.
I said the exact thing when I heard it!
He did. They couldn’t refuse though. Basically, he forced them then he payed them
I forgot about his teeth
“George Washington had wooden teeth”
Wow
And why do we have this seems creepy and obsessive to have don't you guys think?
I mean it's one of the last remnants of George freaking Washington in the flesh as he existed.

Many of AO's vids the music is too loud.
