You glossed over the fact that teeth were pulled by FORCE from slaves. The aunts weren't persuaded but were coerced into giving up the items. History is really told the 'winners' I guess.
What an odd and fantastic piece of history. Thanks for documenting this! Years ago I was able to see an original set (top and bottom w/ springs) of dentures and the robe President Washington was wearing when he passed. They were on display at the Huntington Museum in Southern California. They were part of a traveling history tour of George Washington artifacts. I believe the items are now located at Mount Vernon.
@@McMidget10 I'm replying to a 2 years old comment but well... It is what it is. No, teeth did not look like this in general just becaue it was X era and they didn't look like this for everyone, they looked like this because of genetical issues, lack of healthcare, lack of hygiene and specific eating habits. There were many people at the time with great teeth.
@Bobbyjustbobby You can’t nicely ask someone to be a slave. It’s inherently violent. So really the point you’re making is neither here nor there. They’re all bad, varying degrees of cruelty. All cruel.
@Bobbyjustbobby first of all you're going by what you heard you weren't there something can be well-documented and be totally false and second of all owning someone else to do labor is not okay no matter if you treat them good or bad slavery in general is bad
RE: The Watch. The KEY (at 2:31)was for winding the watch, not to get into the back of the watch. This was before watches wound with a crown and stem permanently affixed. I have owned a number of early key wound watches,
I am 35 and although I try i've already lost a whole tooth Well Washington lost most of his by 30 so that gives me some confidence... Then again it is 2020, not 1790
Would he not be embarrassed to know people 200+ years in the future would be looking at his dentures? I read he was very insecure about his dental problems and it makes me feel kinda bad the way his bad teeth are so well-known through the ages.
Dustin Matthews please just shut the fuck up, I’m not even going to both correcting every single false point you tried to make. You’re an idiot, go educate yourself on REAL history
Dustin Matthews you actually do sound stupid asf lmfao. Please for the love of all that’s good just do some research, it’ll open your eyes to a lot that has gone and and that is still going on
@@mr.matthews67 Very well said. It sucks that racism is still a topic of discussion in 2020 when America fought so hard to rid the country of systemic racism. Everyone is equal in the eyes of God and the law, but those who deem themselves victims shall fall to the narrative of systemic racism. It's time to move on from that mentality.
She really thinks that her family talking about is a great piece of History she doesn't even know where her bloodline starts but she wants to relate herself to some government figure I guess that makes her feel like she's somebody special
As important and interesting as this topic is, the addition of "musical background" is annoying and blocks the clarity of what the curator is saying. Please, this video is NOT about music!!
Also in some cases animal teeth! But yes. As Anne mentions in the video, these dentures are constructed out of ivory and human teeth. www.mountvernon.org/library/digitalhistory/digital-encyclopedia/article/false-teeth/ Also, here's more reading about how those human teeth may have potentially come from Washington's slaves at the time, which Anne also mentions briefly in the video. www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/facts/washingtons-teeth/george-washington-and-slave-teeth/
Did she say he “paid his slaves for their teeth”? I think we all know that isn’t true. So instead of glossing over it and glorifying this man, if we’re going to talk about his dentures let’s be honest and say that he had his slaves teeth pulled out so he could use them for his dentures. That was real slick of y’all. 😒
It's actually true that Washington may have paid his slaves for teeth, though we are not entirely sure that the teeth he paid for went to these dentures or to his family. (We can only make educated guesses!) There is only one note in his ledger that notes that on May 8, 1784, he paid 6 pounds 2 shillings on account of his dentist at the time, Dr. Le Moyer, and the money was paid out to the slaves at Mt Vernon. It should also be noted that the price they paid for the teeth was much less than the going rate, and of course there's no telling how the teeth were actually extracted. Here is a paper that details it better: gwpapers.virginia.edu/george-washingtons-false-teeth-come-slaves-look-evidence-responses-evidence-limitations-history/
I find it hard to believe that he would pay a slave for their teeth. The whole slave master relationship never included payment for anything! He owns you!
Ive tried explaining to my kids that he never had wooden teeth. Ive showed them many articles and videos yet they still said I was silly. That's modern schooling and one of the MILLION reasons why my husband and I decided to faith base homeschool. The system wants to teach racism, race baiting, gender equality/inequality, reliance on government, self hatred, no to gun ownership, fascism, socialism, no to small business etc.
I really find it hard to believe he "paid" HIS slaves for their teeth. Think about it, they were HIS slaves therefore, HIS "property" and HIS teeth. Why would he need to pay them? We know he didnt pay them for their labor hense the word SLAVE, so, why would he pay them for their teeth. Just saying.....
Precisely my thoughts. He owned many slaves including their teeth. I wonder how many slaves lost their teeth, when George Washington was dissatisfied with his ill-fitted dentures and demanded another.

The women donated it because of that very reason.
Paid his slaves for teeth?
Paid sounds dubious
Like they could say no.
@Bobbyjustbobby How ok would someone have to treat you for you to be a slave?
@Offensive man They could not. What do you think slavery is? You have no autonomy over your body.

The Library Company of Philadelphia has a set of dentures that belonged to George Washington.
Good to know! Is it the whole set of dentures? We were under the impression that the only full complete set was at the Mount Vernon Estates!
Why would someone carry around someone elses tooth? Seems a little creepy.
