I think an important mention in this, is the difference between 404 (from 2005, aka OG) and SX/A - especially for newcomers; OG has subjectively more interesting EFX, but the EFX has a couple of milliseconds load-time, which means a small gap in the sound when selecting a new EFX. This is not the case with SX/A, which gives you the freedom to switch EFX on the fly, with no gap in between the changes. Also, OG runs CF cards and external soundfiles has to be imported in-the-box - while SX/A runs SD cards and has computer software for importing external sounds to the pads, directly to the SD. I personally own two OG and one SX, and I prefer recording my equipment on the OG. Maybe because i owned one since 2005, but maybe also because of the limitations. I tend to focus more on getting the right samples baked in, than playing with the EFX, I guess.

SP-404SX is definitely a swiss army knife. I've used it in my setup in so many different ways. Going to live shows for a wide range of genres - it is also well loved across those lines. For instance, rock bands love to use it for backing tracks (long sample length allows for that), and dub dj's love it for one-shot samples (sirens, etc.), and lofi junkies use it for DJing as well as producing. Just an incredibly versatile piece of kit!

The circuits add this special sauce, maybe it's cause its 12bit, man idk. But it adds character, and a little extra presence to the bass. It's incredible.
The 404sx is not the most diverse or featured packed sampler available. But for some reason, it is one of my favorites and has remained so since I purchased it. I absolutely love it and would never part with it. It's missing a lot of features that are deal breakers to a lot of people, but to me that's part of the appeal. And almost every fx sounds great in this little box. Anyways, great video as always!

Could listen to our beloved Midlife Synthesist talking about gear all day long. It’s almost like therapy. Love and light from sunny Thailand 🇹🇭 ❤️☀️🏖🐘🌴 🥥
The lack of proper pitch control was a deal breaker for me last time I tried it. Having to jump back and forth between something else just to pitch a sample felt like the thing was missing the point for me. But lately, I've been thinking about how fun it would be to have one to compliment my Digitakt. I think the Digitakt sequencing the SP and the SP handling fx would be a good time.
100% . I've got SP303 and luck of proper pitching algorithm bugs me for years. I use MPCs & SP1200 for years they all have nice pitch control. Rolland should make a new SP with proper pitch and sequencer it's about time ;) though I love the SP303 FX and use them for resampling into MPC 3000 or even Akai S950. Peace & Jazz
@@rectalfission they are very rare . Wish someone would hack SP303 404 to unlock the pitch algorithm and create a custome OS for it like they did for MPC1000/2500 or Volca Sample MK1. But , sure u can find SP202 if you r patient and can wait. Good luck and keep making music 🎷🎹🥁👍
Hah, I’ve got a similar video about the Digitakt coming out tomorrow morning!! I’d love to see a 404 vs DT video, I’m one of those folks who has never laid a hand on one of these and have always been intrigued!
Awesome bro! I’ll definitely check out your video, love me some digitakt fun. The sp 404 to digitakt comparison is sounding more and more like a fun idea for a vid, stay tuned!
Disk streaming is why I ordered one. It's on a slow boat from Japan at the moment so it'll be awhile yet till I'm hands-on with it. This video is certainly encouraging, though. Considering Akai's lack of disk streaming I'll second the suggestion for an episode that integrates the two; using the Force would be my preference, however. It seems an expensive solution to the lack of disk streaming but it also seems the only proper solution.
Dude you are in for a treat! My suggestion, fill it up with samples, grab some batteries and go rock it in the wild somewhere. Spend a day just learning until you vibe with it. It’s a wonderful experience. Keep me posted!
Ahh, the beloved SP404. I’ve had my (OG 404) since new. You’ve definitely summed up the greatness of its existence. For OG owners, the only shortcoming is expanded memory capacity. As the SX was upgraded to the SD card, from the CF card. I believe they moved a couple EFX to buttons as well. But bare minimum, the SP has been an instant sample/efx on the fly unit in my workflow. Keep up the great vids. Peace...Netm8kr 👍🏾✌🏾
Mpc live is much better for sampling, chopping, creating and portability. However, sp 404 fx can't be compared. In my opinion, get an mpc and buy an sp 404 for the effects
Hey man. Once again, killing it with the visual presentation. So good! Now I am already browsing eBay for a cheap 404, of course. Wondering how well Midi is implemented.
Dude thank you! I absolutely love your video esthetics so I take this as a huge compliment! As for the sp404, I say go for it. It’s one of those things you have to try out to see if it suits you, no amount of videos will ever be able to give you the proper feel of this thing. Some people love it to death and others absolutely hate it, so you just have to try it and see! Cheers my friend!
I'm waiting for Novation to release the Circuit Rhythm and then I'll buy either this or that. Either way I'm very excited for some portable sample mangling!
Watching the video because I’m trying to decide on taking my first steps into sampling. Finding it all a bit confusing. I’m a modular user with a Squid but want more. Very tempted by this machine, particularly following this video!
Hello my friend! Sampling is an amazing world and full of possibilities! If it’s going to be your very first sampler, I wholeheartedly recommend the digitakt. It’s fast, fun and powerful. Also integrates well with other gear and you get the elektron sequencer. The sp404 I feel is something you enjoy much more if you already have some experience mangling sound and want to also try fingerdrumming. That said, follow your heart! If it calls out to you, enjoy! Cheers!
Great vidéo! You said it's not your first choice for quick jamming. What would be your favourite portable groovebox or sampler for brainstorming or quickly seting up a backtack for guitarist/ multi instrumentist? Mc 101 and circuit tracks come to my mind. Connecting with other synth as a brain would be a plus but not the most important. Thanks anyone !
Yeah, I’d have to say it’s interesting that I ended up with the Roland MC 09 when I dabbled the first time in music hardware sampling and the Boss similar to it was the other I was considering. Using an Octatrack now the volca sample I had was more efficiently instrumental as I bet the 404 is. May have to try it some day if I ever collect a new sampler. Octatrack isn’t terrible for my mobility
Vi que Jef Gibbons te menciono en su masterclasss del Subsequent 25, felicidades, que tremendo canal te sacaste, saludos!. (I saw that Jef Gibbons mentioned you in his Subsequent 25 masterclass, congratulations, what a tremendous channel you got)
Muchísimas gracias hermano! Vi el video y casi me atraganté cuando me mencionó jaja. Yo soy fan de su canal hace mucho así que para mi fue increíble. Gracias por el apoyo! Saludos!
And you did it again! It happend with the Zoom L-12. I was now looking for a sampler way more simpler and cheaper than the Digitakt, and you mention this one that I didn't even know... arrrg. You deserve the title of "Gas Ambassador" ;-) Take care.
@@MidlifeSynthesist Well, my story with the SP404a ended abruptly the evening after I received it. I was sitting in a park, relaxing and listening to music. Suddenly I wished I had a portable groovebox to make music there, something like Novation Circuit Tracks. But , wait, what is a Circuit Tracks and also a SP404? Answer: A Synthstrom Deluge. So instead of having two different machines, I returned the SP404a and ordered a Deluge instead :-) It is more expensive than the sum of them - not much really - but also I think it is far more flexible.
How about now with the MK II available ? Is it still worth it ? The only downside to MKII I see is lack of built in microphone, but I barely use it in my deluge when connected to all studio gear. On the go it’s a different story, soo good to have built in microphone. What do you think guys ?
Been wanting one for ages and tried one briefly in a shop in Tokyo. somehow I just did not vibe with it there and then, but I still want to properly try one for awhile and see. Especially for the life fx tweaking. I did fall for this device though after seeing Traitrs (Canadian post punk band) use it live. . Then again.. Circuit Rythm coming up soon. Going to be a new competitor? Hmm.... patiently waiting.
It’s one of those devices you have to marinate for a while before you can really get the most out of it. Easy to learn, hard to master, which is very cool. I say give it a good month to really try it out if you can and if it just doesn’t inspire at least it will be easy to sell. Cheers!
@@MidlifeSynthesist My thoughts exactly. The only thing I seem to notice is that people don't really sample directly into it, which would be one of the main reasons why I would want to get one. For just playing samples I have the Model:Samples which I absolutely love, but sp404 seems to have that really creative jamming workflow once you get the nack for it. I'm mainly a vocalist as well, so being able to do some live fx processing on top if things would definitely be a use.
Awesome video bro. Would you recommend the SP 404 mk2 for, for example, a guitar player who wants to make full tracks by his own? Haha, I’m between SP, OP-1 and maschine mikro.
I’m watching this video in 2022 as I jumped recently into the GAS pool. I have a used MK3 and (until I can use it because the vendor needs to initiate the license transfer) I am trying to decide if I need a sampler or the MK3 will do the trick. Everyone is raving about the Digitakt except my wallet. Yet this is the second video I’ve heard fun used with the SP404. I’ve not heard that with the Digitakt. The menu diving on the Digitakt is a turn off but I have a few midi controllers vaccinate myself from that disease. I think I will hold off and learn the MK3 and then if I feel I need to add some spice, look into the SP. My guess is the MKII? With so much gear, workflows and YT videos, I am questioning why I jumped in this pool. But the more I see people talk about the fun part of the gear, I think I will be ok. Because after 50, life should be about fun as time… wait, this is getting awkward. Thank you again for another helpful level set.
Hi! I am thinking on getting one of these to play with my Deluge (since chopping on this unit seems more fun and it has pads). Have you ever used the midi functionality on the Sp404?
Hi bro! Just used midi for the clock a few times, but if I’m using it with other gear it’s usually for audio processing live at the end of the chain. Great idea for a video to pair them up and see what happens! Thanks!
You can activate all the pads via midi. Basically you choose a base midi channel, say channel 1, the first half of the slots can be played across a keyboard on midi channel 1, the last half of slots can be played on midi channel 2. All with velocity sensitivity. Makes it great for using an external sequencer if you aren't a fan of it's own sequencer.
Nice. Thanks for sharing. For me, the first sampler was Soundtracker on Amiga in the late 80s. It felt like an instrument after countless hours of making mods to demos and intros. I wish I hadn't skipped the 2000s and most of the 2010s - I might have had the chance to experience these hardware devices.
It’s never too late my friend! I was away from music making for about 10 years also and in 2015 decided to go back with a vengeance. Beat decision I ever made! Cheers!
Thank you for your thoughts on this sampler. Questions: Is the Roland SP404 sx or A good for making remixes (mashups)? Would you recommend it for megamixing? Or would you use a computer based application for this? How does this stand up against the Roland MV8800?
Your smoking Roland's greens as features on the TR-8 mate! That's what your smoking I don't own one but looking at second hand ones for $750 - $800 for a second 404 OR a new one for $809.00 AUD I am definitely not jumping in any time sadly - I would love to but there's so much gear I need.
As far as I can tell after searching YT and the interwebs, the “A” is just the “SX” optimized for use with the TR 8 and a new paint job. No real difference besides esthetics if you don’t own/use a TR 8. (Open to anyone correcting me if I’m mistaken though). Thanks for watching my friend!
Heres my metaphor when trying to explain the sp404 to friends that use other groove boxes or music toys in general: it’s like making love without a condom. You give up security and control, but you gain in feeling 😉.
@@MidlifeSynthesist ...what a great comment ! I love the thing ....there are so many things we want to experience for the first time ....for me...it’s watching Pulp Fiction for the first time...letting the jaw drop over and over ...the sheer exhilaration of going to the Louvre for the first time ...standing face to face with a Renaissance oil of Giotto or Fra Angelico....
I think about the 404 every time there's 48 months no interest on Roland. Last year I bought a 1010 Blackbox instead, but I have to put on reading glasses to make music with it.
The Sp404 had its time but honestly it needs couple of upgrades. For a hundred bucks more u get a Machine, for hundred bucks less u get the micro. COntroller+ Software are both superior to the 404. For Almost 450 bucks less u get the Koala App. A Beatmaking App that is superior to the sp too. That Box makes definately fun, and i have one but its time to for Roland to present an upgrade that is 2021 worthy.
It wouldn’t be my first choice, no. For techno i feel it’s best to look at something with built in synths and a better sequencer. Mc101 comes to mind as a great choice in that price range👍🏼
@@MidlifeSynthesist yeah the mc101 is definetly in my list, I use a digitakt and a tr8 for drums, but casually am looking for something portable to pair with my circuit. and also thinking in the new circuit cause I have the perfect excuse to get, my old circuit is getting irresponsive but I dont blame it, we've been music around from the beach to the mountains in the las 4 years and its been thru sand, dirt and water hehehe, thanks for your responses bro, always looking forward into your channel, keep em comming

Cheers very much!
Could listen to our beloved Midlife Synthesist talking about gear all day long. It’s almost like therapy. Love and light from sunny Thailand 🇹🇭 ❤️☀️🏖🐘🌴 🥥
Thank you so much Franky my good friend! Your kind words are always a breath of fresh air! Lots of love from down south!
@@MidlifeSynthesist - always a pleasure! Big hugs from the four of us in good ol' Siam :o)
Very beautiful and interesting video. Thanks 🙌
I've been reading about a noise issue related to the display.
SP202 has the best Pitch in the game, sounds like creamy butter. I need to grab one.
Loved this man!!
Thanks bro!
Already have one and love but wanted to see what you had to say about the beloved fun box.
Thank you so much! Nothing but love for this classic! See you around my friend!Cheers!
Thank you so much for watching bro! I feel the same way about my sp404sx. It’s a true instrument and a hell of a ride. Peace!
Just found your channel. Great vid, cheers!
Would like to see it compared with the MPC live/one. And maybe how to emulate those sweet fx on the MPC
That’s a very cool video idea! Thanks👍🏼
Those are really incomparable
And how to combine both!!
This video made a good comparison of the MPC One and the Digitakt
th-cam.com/video/vWTSOMq88w4/w-d-xo.html
Mpc live is much better for sampling, chopping, creating and portability. However, sp 404 fx can't be compared. In my opinion, get an mpc and buy an sp 404 for the effects
Hey man. Once again, killing it with the visual presentation. So good! Now I am already browsing eBay for a cheap 404, of course. Wondering how well Midi is implemented.
As far as pad triggering goes and following an external clock, midi works pretty well.
@@BradTennant thanks, man!
I just ordered one ^_^
been thinking about getting one for awhile! with the mark II maybe prices will drop a bit.
Cheers!
@@MidlifeSynthesist Thanks for your response, I will certainly factor that into my final decision!
Hey, now that the MKII is here???? Thoughts???
Super nice video! Making me GAS pretty hard. Would love to see a digi vs sp404!
Thank you so much! I’ll get to work on it soon! See you then, cheers!
Saludos!
I watched because I think about buying one for live presentations...
And you did it again! It happend with the Zoom L-12. I was now looking for a sampler way more simpler and cheaper than the Digitakt, and you mention this one that I didn't even know... arrrg. You deserve the title of "Gas Ambassador" ;-) Take care.
LOL, I like the sound of that haha. Thanks for watching bro, just a heads up, you will be looking for an MC 707 soon 😅
I'm back after watching all the mk2 videos
Lol, I’m still watching them! Put my preorder in for the mk2, the GAS is real haja
i would love to see that comparision!
Will do! Thanks for dropping me a line my friend!
can you sync/quantize playbacl of running loops on teh pads?
Watch out for the MC101 with the new updates. It's a beast!
Can I also load complete backing tracks on this device? 👀
could you trigger an sp404 with external midi keyboard? eg use a track on a keystep to sequence an sp404
Hey man, awesome videos. Would you recommend the new sp 404 mk2 for someone who wants to create full tracks with a guitar?
Awesome video bro. Would you recommend the SP 404 mk2 for, for example, a guitar player who wants to make full tracks by his own? Haha, I’m between SP, OP-1 and maschine mikro.
i have one for years but i have not got the chance to play with it. i got it from japan.
for all the sad souls that bought this when mkII was just announced... may you finally lay to rest peacefully
haha
Does the new MK2 have the same "warm" sound you speak about?
Thanks as always... how do you find this vs the 1010blackbox (which I love!)
I haven’t had a chance to check it out! I am fearful that the screen on the blackbox will be too small for my chubby fingers and poor eyesight though…
Hello,is it worth it to get one of these just for the effects? To use alongside a MPC!!
I had the SP-202, 303, and I still use the SP-555
Super info ☺😄💖👌👌
THE TOOLS OF THE TRADE!
do i need to download a sampler file for it... coz the one i have have no sampler on it to begin with.
The first "remember to subscribe" alert I acted on.
I would like to see the Digitakt vs 404 comparison 😊
Thanks for dropping me a line bro! I’ll get on it🤟🏻 cheers!
🤣🤟🏻
@@MidlifeSynthesist that's why they got rid of the green on the TR-8S
i have an sp 404 dont know how to use it pls help
Hello my friend, check out the channel “spvidz”. Dude has loads of great tutorials👍🏼
That's why I sold Maschine+ after I lusted for one since Maschine MK1 launched. It was too damn easy to make something cool.
Maybe Roland might need to create a new updated version.
Roland’s supernatural sound engine in their keyboards is one of the best to me.
What's the major difference between the sp404A & SX versions.
Made me spit out my coffee dude🤣🤣👍🏼
@@MidlifeSynthesist 🤣... Sorry man
Haha....I got mine 1 day ago! The thing is a monster.....
Man what a great moment! I wish I could relive getting my sp404 and op 1 for the first time all over again lol. enjoy!

Damn, that stank face lol
why doesn't roland release an upgraded version??

I think about the 404 every time there's 48 months no interest on Roland. Last year I bought a 1010 Blackbox instead, but I have to put on reading glasses to make music with it.
Lol, I really like the concept of the blackbox, but also think it will be challenging on these severely near sighted eyes 😅 cheers!
The real question is what’s the best sp-404 🧐
And Finally after years of dismissing and not understanding this Machine,
I've decided to pull the trigger on one.
I got Scammed.
Sad short story.
Dibiase is a 404 king.
Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll check him out! Peace!
The Sps are not for genres like techno or are they?

I’d love to see a comparison with Koala sampler. It seems to have a similar vibe to the 404
Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know about that app, I’ll most definitely check it out!
@@MidlifeSynthesist Yeah, I'd be interested to see your take on Koala. I sold my 404A two months ago after buying the samurai in-app purchase in Koala. I thought I would regret selling my SP, but I don't.
