Ok...I'm spitballing here, but communion is our ritual celebration of Christ's life offered as a covenant for our spiritual salvation in God. Baptism is the ritual celebration of our covenant of lives offered as living sacrifices to God in thanks for Christ's life, death and resurrection. We, as United Methodists, have eschewed most rites and rituals in an attempt to distance ourselves from the high church. Why? Why can there not be a public reaffirmation of our baptismal covenant just as we recite the Lord's Prayer? Dear God, we offer this gathering in remembrance of our baptismal covenant to offer our lives as living sacrifices to You--through Christ's example. Amen.
