Clock Work Knight takes me back man. Pops worked 3rd shift and i only saw him on weekends when he'd play this and get past all the levels I couldn't. I thought the level design was so cool as a kid, it was incredible to me. God I miss my Saturn, what great times these were. Thanks for the dose of nostalgia.
Thats beautiful. I lost my dad this year and am now in the property I grew up in where I had many similar memories albeit it was actually me that was good at the games rather than him. I miss him and yes I miss my Saturn, in fact my whole collection! Thank god for emulation. Now weirdly I've gone through the mill a bit with family members makin my life difficult so in dark times I was suddenly recommended the song by tj Davis- time which appeared on metropolis street racer which I also used to love... Please take me back... it was so much easier then.
@orderofmagnitude-TPATP Sorry for your loss man. I see the degradation of my parents' quality of life and I just cling to these memories and any new ones. Maybe I should get into emulation myself for that reason.
Sega should have released these as one long game, and remade the rest of their Saturn library on modern systems. It would see a lot of new interest in these games. Also, there was supposed to be a Clockwork Knight game on the Gamecube, but it was cancelled.
I gotta believe there would be very significant interest in the Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast libraries. So many bad ass games. Keep everything that made them great and add a few things here and there with new tech. and it seems to me that they'd have huge sales #'s.
Funny thing is, Clockwork Knight did get a 2-in-1 release in Japan that added new minigames and a boss rush mode. And the U.S version of 2 was discovered to have all of the first game hidden behind a button code since it was based on the combo pack. So yes! If you have a copy of 2, you can actually play the whole series
This was one of those titles that defined the early Saturn for me. While the game play never seemed much different than what we had been getting the previous gen it was still visual impressive. I remember at the time it got pretty average reviews but given how the rest of the era has evolved it's surprisingly held up in my opinion.
I love this game so much! It's so whimsical and timeless! I don't think you could have made a game as special as this at any other point than the mid 90's. It's basically Castle of Illusion with the graphics of Donkey Kong Country and a catchy jazz soundtrack! Also, I can't believe the entirety of CK1 was hidden on the CK2 disc this whole time!
The toys and environment being "old timey" is the basic visual concept of the game, not just that the designers were a bit old fashioned...they knew the aesthetic they were going for.
Toy Story came out after this. Jon Burton (Traveler's Tales founder, Toy Story lead) stated on his YT channel that Clockwork Knight was the direct inspiration for the Toy Story game.
Yes, Japan also got the Clockwork Knight Lucky bag collection with both games on one Disc. This I got a while ago. Believe it was Double CD case edition (single disc CD) that included a Calendar which unfortunately was missing from my used copy I purchased from a Japanese seller. Great games, Nice.👍
Gaming magazines were awesome man. I didn't have the Saturn but I played it. I had a Playstation, Sega Genesis, Master System, Game Gear. Thise were the best days.
Just recently bought clockwork Knight 2 after I found out the first clockwork Knight was on the disc aswell via a code. Waited and watched for a couple months and a seller was asking $40 snatched it up and loving these games.
Clockwork Knight brings back so many nostalgic memories, especially when I hear the music. I can’t quite pinpoint what it is about this game that keeps me coming back. I don't find it particularly fun these days, but I love booting it up. I guess it's because it takes me back to my youth. As a bonus if you had waited for Clockwork Knight 2, you would have actually gotten both the first and second game by entering a code. Man I wish that had been discovered years ago.
I still have fond memories of this game. Game reviews said it was easy? Not for me, Jack. It was hard in the later levels. I still wish this (as well as the other Saturn games) have another chance at life; but knowing Sega's still ashamed of the Saturn, it seems unlikely. Also, "A Lullaby" is the most beautiful end theme in video games. Very relaxing, and very calming.
You mentioned Toy Story and this video made me realize how wrong I was about this game. I assumed the game was made to capitalize on it. "Wait, if Clockwork Knight was a launch title, then it couldn't have been inspired by Toy Story." And sure enough, later on the video, you mention how Toy Story released a year after the Saturn's launch. Guess it was just a neat coincidence.
Man this game takes me back i loved this game as a kid. The saturn was my first video game system my dad gave it to when he realized it was a failure and moved on to n64. I was around 5 at the time had that system til i was 18 & sold it boy i regretted that.
@@viewerguy10 no the point is that people apparently have to go out of their way to sound stupid on the internet. just because it's the internet doesn't mean people can't talk "normally", then again everyone's brains are so fried they seemingly can only talk in memes, slang, and pop culture references.
The score in games used to be a big deal. The soundtracks to Link to the Past and Super Castlevania are still out of this world. They add so much to the overall gaming experience. Now, many games don't have music or what they do have is bargain basement.
Thank you so much for honoring an old request of mines a few years back regarding this short-lived Sega exclusive. Like many of you, I discovered this game as a demo on the Bootleg Sampler disc included within the holiday promo of the Saturn in '96. While not as technically intuitive as the other competing 3D platforms like Crash and Super Mario 64, I actually grew quite fond of this exclusive in compensation of having good and witty visual designs with simple to use mapped controls that made the game enjoyable. Clockwork Knight's music felt it took some inspirations from SuperTramp which made me connect to it even more. What I was NOT aware after over 25 years, that there was a lost cheat code in CK2 that unlocks the first game. Once again, I express my gratitude to this channel. Thank you, Sega Lord X! 🕰
I rented Clockwork Night 1 and 2 and I thought they were great. I think they were underrated at the time because side scrolling performers were considered passé. It's probably more influential than it's given credit for too, as it showed how you could successfully integrate 3D elements into 2D gameplay, which is more commonplace now.
Wow, I dinldnt realize that code for the US version of Clockwork 2 that unlocks part 1 was discovered so recently; I thought I had played part one on Clockwork Knight 2 a long time ago; but that must've been that Japanese extra edition, which I also have
Thanks for your work, Sega Lord X. I appreciate the professional quality of your videos and your expertise on Sega. You provide context too, which is a big help. I was born in 91, had a Saturn before a PS1, and briefly remembered this title. Keep it up, and stay safe out there!
One of my many favorites on the Sega Saturn, it definitely showed the potential of the system. I still wish Sega was making consoles, and I think it they did they would clean house.
Been saying this for several years now. The industry needs competition and Sega could make big moves with a new console and the absolute bonanza of game catalogue they own.
I picked both part one and two back in the day. Clockwork Knight 2 especially kept on adding things on subsequent play throughs: the title screen would change and update, I don't recall if this game did the same as some of the Nights releases, where they would change things depending on what day you played (ie Xmas, New Years etc...). Had great memories with this franchise, it is a shame that Sega has not follow up or revisit it.
Another very nuanced and insightful take from sega lord x. Only point I disagree with is the frustration of 'dying' and having to go back to the beginning. These games (I only had 2nd one) were pretty easy to beat from memory and I'm not even that skilful
The Clockwork Knight games just screamed cosy to me. Even....."Christmassy"!! Remember renting the first from Blockbusters not long after getting my Saturn and loving it. Then buying it!
Good review! I've always heard about these games, but never got a chance to play them! I didn't realize Clockwork Knight 1 & 2 were just two halves of one whole game much like Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It really is a shame these stayed exclusive to the Saturn as I don't think (as far as I know) they were ever re-released (even on PC). I kind of miss this old Sega that would have weird and fun ideas. I love 2D platformers, so if I ever get the chance, I will definitely give these a shot finally!
Fun fact about this game is that DMA mimicking the look of it is apparently what led to the gradual creation of the first Grand Theft Auto. Apparently at some point they realized that adding a floor turned the side on engine into top down. At least that's what they claimed in a making of GTA from EDGE.
I forgot about this game. Im going to play it tomorrow on my steamdeck. Another great video. Thanks for your hard work. I always smile when i discover you put a video up. I love Sega and miss them being a console maker. Thank Microsoft for that
I've spent years trying to remember the name of this game! I was around 8-10 years old when I played the demo version at a friend's house, but I only remembered it as the 'game with the yellow action figure and a screwdriver as a weapon.' Only now, in 2024, did CHAT GPT help me figure out the name of the game!
I got this when I bought a Saturn a few years back. It is fun enough but I don't think it has enough to compare to what I was getting on the SNES back when it released. Especially with the DKC games and Yoshi's Island being released at the same time.
I must admit, I've always been a bit dismissive about these two games. The art style and basic 2D game play didn't thrill me back then. I expected a lot more for the steep price tag of the SEGA Saturn. But watching this very entertaining review, makes me want to give these games a second chance. Time can change all things, because now I love early Saturn and PlayStation games! Anyway, very cool video, Bro.🤩👍👍👍❤️❤️
Never played these but I remember when I had my tonsils removed, my dad gave me a Saturn magazine with Clockwork Knight on the cover and I've just always wanted to try it but never did.
I jumped straight in with Clockwork Knight 2 back in the day. I absolutely loved it! having not long come off the 16 bit era, the 2.5 polygon visuals and the sense of depth the playfield had, just totally blew me away. Yeah, it's simple and short, but the game still holds a lot of charm for me, even to this day.
This brings memories of playing the demo for Clockwork Knight 2 on the Sega Sampler cd. I wish they could bring the collection to pc and modern consoles.
Good video. I wouldn't have found it interesting to play it back in the day, but that's because I was tired of the genre well before 1994. Still, seeing it today, it looks fine to me.
Kool, actually I can see myself playing this series, I mean it's fluid and a decent platformer, kinda reminds me of The Pandemonium Series on PlayStation 1. Thanks for the review, I may look into this 👍🏾
It's remarkable to me how closely Toy Story on the Genesis came to giving the same kind of 3d appearance as this game all the way over on the Saturn. This game could have been adapted to run on the Genesis without losing too many of the visual effects - though you'd lose sprite scaling of the layer system unless you made the concession of using the Sega 32X
I loved this game for my old Saturn. I was never able to get part 2. It is such a shame we never got these games re-released on modern consoles and Steam. Why Sega? Why?
From a 2024 perspective I like both games. I think they look good and have aged well. The gameplay isnt difficult to get a hang of. Also as I get older I prefer these shorter games, I cant sink hours on end into games anymore
Thanks for this video, great, well packaged and complete as usual 😊 Do you know if the cheat code for unlocking the first is in the PAL copy of CK2 too?? 😮😮😮
It makes sense that the first Clockwork Knight would be available in the second game. I mean, they already had the first game's bosses as part of the boss rush. I guess it defests the purpose of owning both games, unless it's for your collection.
It's a representation of that time, the transition to 3D didn'tt necessarily have to be polygonal, how many times was this game criticized for looking like "a Genesis game" come on, let the critics try to make a game this complete in Genesis haha, I even love the CGI, perfect for representing plastic toys, a shame that this saga only had 2 games, I hope one day at least Sega releases the Saturn mini including clockwork knight
Clockwork Knight es una saga maravillosa. Jugué al 2, que tengo desde aquellos años, y la experiencia siempre me resultó genial. Y no ha envejecido para nada.
I think the second game would’ve been received much better if the cheat code was actually known at the time. Better yet it should’ve just included it without a cheat code
I love how nice and short they were. Sick of developers trying to make their games long as possible, sometimes less is more. Quality over quantity. Though I can understand this game being a bit short for some, if both games were combined it would be more suitable length for a full priced game these days, would probably cut the price in half if I were releasing just part 1 or 2.
Clock Work Knight takes me back man. Pops worked 3rd shift and i only saw him on weekends when he'd play this and get past all the levels I couldn't. You know why? The usa version is based on the Japanese 1 & 2 combined game and all thry did was disable the opening game choice menu.
You fucking what
This game has aged so well. Part 2 was the most amazing effect on the Saturn.

Japanese Toy Story anyone?
The Clockwork Knight is the Original Keyblade Master before Sora in Kingdom Hearts

Clockwork Knight 2 released in the US was based on that JP collection. CWK1 can be unlocked with a cheat code that was found earlier this year.
These videos always make me pop in a game I wouldn't normally think about.
Clock Work Knight 1 and 2 are both brilliant. 😀👍🎮
CK2 had a code to include the 1st one. At title screen: up, down, left, up, left, down, right, up, L, R, L, R
Tough games but fun.
Great review. These look like fun games and the graphics have definitely aged better than some of those mid-90s full polygon games.
I remeber this game being advertised everywhere. Never played it, but i remeber seeing it in magazines alot during the time.
These games always gave me huge Christmas vibes
I forgot the title of this game, it was fun. I never knew that there was a second part. Thank you for the sweet memories!✌️💚
I only ever played the demo on the “bootleg” sampler. But it’s just occurring to me now that Sora wasn’t the first to wield a keyblade 🤔

The music in these games slap super hard, they're underrated in that regard.
Tell me about it. I still jam out to the CK soundtrack at work and in the car sometimes! 😊
"Slap"
That's such a corny cringe term and now there's an even dumber one: "Cooked"
Smh.

This is a series that looks best on a CRT TV (something I could say about a lot of Saturn games). Fun games, too.
Clockwork Knight = Toy Story
I think the second game would’ve been received much better if the cheat code was actually known at the time. Better yet it should’ve just included it without a cheat code
I recently beat the first one. Charming platformer.
I played both and enjoyed them. Also enjoyed bug 2. Second one of both are better to me. But all of them are awesome
I would love an HD remaster of these
I love how nice and short they were. Sick of developers trying to make their games long as possible, sometimes less is more. Quality over quantity.
Though I can understand this game being a bit short for some, if both games were combined it would be more suitable length for a full priced game these days, would probably cut the price in half if I were releasing just part 1 or 2.
Loved this game!!!
