    I am so impressed with how Michaela DePrince handled this interview; intelligent, and mature. She is so incredibly poised. The interviewer asked questions that were so entirely disrespectful, and extremely narrow minded, inviting others to see through his limited lens. I feel sorry for him, and hope for social change that allows for greater reflection about our social location and how it informs how we see things allowing us to be more careful with our questions for people. Thank-you doesn't begin to express my appreciation for you, Michaela DePrince, you're an inspiration!!!

      I thought I was the only one that saw that... very narrow-minded and kept interrupting her and just very intrusive I would have pumped the breaks... but you know what that's what they want to see another reason to call her an angry black woman. ugh

    As a little girl, my first sight of black dancers and ballerinas in particular was the Dance Theatre of Harlem. They came to my elementary school and performed The Firebird suite. I was mesmerized! I never forgot that . I think I was seven years old. The arts are so important for children. And black boys and girls need to see role models to know that careers in these fields are an option for them.

    not crazy about the style of this interviewer. He almost seems to want to convince her of something negative, even chuckling at one point at the fact that so to speak she wants to go on in this world that is so different from her, and putting her in an almost apologetic position. Although she handled it beautifully, with dignity and poise. Obviously a very intelligent and mature girl.

    'What's your identity?' 'Will it be an African story?' wtf is wrong with people these days? What does that shit even mean? It's just vague associative feelings that don't mean anything. It's politician talk. Politically correct emptiness.
    So let me help:
    Her identity is her sense of self, that which comes alert when someone utters her name within hearing. Her sense of experience, conscious awareness. Her thoughts, memories, sensations, emotions. Those are the parts of herself of which she, as a human being, is aware, and therefore with which she identifies.
    Any category of classification into which she might be able to be reasonably placed - what the interviewer was fishing for - is nonetheless NOT part of the _self,_ and therefore of the identification of the self by the self, the sense of identity - unless the person were somehow so idiotic that they couldn't distinguish between self and other. And even retarded people do that with no effort at all.
    This lady, by contrast, is clearly unusually intelligent. One can detect it in the thought patterns of her speech. They are crisp, clear, sharp, and measured. Cautious, but brave and bold. I don't know to what extent intelligence may help one to become a ballerina, but she has it either way.
    An "African" story is one that takes place in Africa. This one only partially takes place in Africa. To that extent it's African, and you don't need to ask someone else to know that. But that's not what the interviewer meant. His question was insinuating something nonsensical and insidious, an attempt to foment nonsensicality and unwholesome racialism, ethnic identity politics, subtle race antagonism that hurts Africans more than anyone else. He's a worm, a parasite - one that eventually kills the host.
    It's because he has a brain disease, a horrific zombie mind plague that has become pandemic, called "Leftism." Behold the pustules of dark insanity in his questions.

    • @megs8602
      @megs8602 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is an African story, what is wrong with that?

    • @brindlebriar
      @brindlebriar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's nothing wrong with it being an African story to the extent that it is. But there is something wrong with forcing everybody, or slyly maneuvering everybody, to constantly categorize everything along racial or quasi-racial lines. To racialize everything.
      Honestly, 'what's your identity' is an attempt to put this beautiful person into a stupid little box, put everybody else into stupid little boxes, pretend they're separate, and make them fight each other. It's an attempt to foment racism, hatred, segregation, animosity, resentment, violence of all kinds.
      I can feel that I'm failing to answer you adequately right now, but I don't know where to begin. Perhaps someone can help me out. That kind of mentality is pure evil.
      What if everywhere you went, everything you did, some spiteful little motherfucker was hovering over your shoulder asking, 'Is that an African salad you're eating or a European salad?' 'Are you taking an African walk or a European walk?' 'Oh, you went to.. Disneyland for vacation... Was that an African experience?' 'What identity-group of experience was that?'
      Pretty soon your mind becomes diseased with an obsession of putting everything into these false categories and judging everything by them, and being uptight and paranoid about them. The United States is going completely mad with this sickness.
      I didn't explain this well. My head is kind of muddled right now. Let's just focus on what an inspiring individual is this ballerina. Her value is in her_self._ Her story is _her_ story. She and it need no further categories.
      Identity-group categories are like demons that latch onto people's backs and suck their blood for the rest of their lives, turning them bitter, angry, hateful, and confused, until they die, hate-filled little husks that never got to be human.

    • @megs8602
      @megs8602 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally disagree, for Africans their identity is very much connected to the injustice these people have suffered through out modern history and still do, we simply do not have the privilege of being top at anything, without color becoming the issue, hence why this young lady is famous not for being a good ballerina, but a brilliant Black ballerina. Such identity will never depart, nor separate from a black person or person of color. Eg Obama first black president, not president, even Meghan who identifies with white culture being labelled the forst black princess. It wil not go away and it is tiring.

    He would be the very last to know he was condescending because it is insidious. Keep in mind the world is a patriarchy still. Thank God we're getting out of that and unleashing the purity, beauty and power that is woman onto the world! I'm American and we're suffering torment over rump.

    It felt like he was trying to put her in a racial / cultural box rather than celebrate who she is based on her individual achievements. She handled herself and him very well. The camera was positioned to capture her being emotional and she demanded by her responses his eventual direction.

    The interviewer.....so lame. This child had her stomach cut open and watched a teacher masecured...I think she can handle the passive aggressiveness of the dance world.

    What a beautiful, impressive young lady! But how could one chose such an unsensitive and rude interviewer? I just expected as next questions: “Do you like bananas and do you like to go back to the jungle?“ What an arrogant racist snob. I had wished much more to focus on her childhood and ballet career in America.

    Michaela is wonderful, but shame on the interviewer and the whole bbc for allowing such an lousy interviewer to ask such question. Highly unprofessional! And, since he did bring in a personal note, i will allow myself to comment on him as lousy human being! Michaela once more, is wonderful!

    the programme is called HARD TALK, not some inane miserable little programme with an interviewer who is more interested in him/herself than the guest, asking questions about who does her hair or what frocks she wears. Grow up folks, grown up questions answered by a grown up young woman who has had a horrific start all caused by ignorance and brutality also, may I mention religion, good grief give people a chance, why judge and be so vile.

      Denise Patterson race is a problem in ballet. I’ve been in this industry my entire life. It’s a problem and constantly talking about it is how we’re going to rid the world of it. I go to an originally BLACK ballet school that has since become an international school. ORIGINALLY BLACK and there are so many less of us black girls in the entire school it doesn’t even make sense. It’s a problem. They’re making sure to keep US OUT. I’m glad he kept talking about it. Make these racist white people feel horrible. We need to keep proving them wrong. Black girls don’t get fat and get big boobs. We can maintain our physique just as well as anyone else. I’m 23 and 100 pounds of lean muscle. I train hard everyday from 7am to 5pm and still have racist ballet teachers at an internationally recognized school that began during JIM CROW to introduce ballet to US. I’M SORRY FOR THE PARAGRAPH but as someone who also loves and breathes ballet daily, the racism is such an important topic. If we don’t let racist white people know they ain’t low and we see them and what they’re doing, they’ll keep excluding us under the radar. Peace sis
