Hi, the lad struggled because the cables were so short 👍... but the result was neat. Thanks for watching and commenting. Gaz

The symbol on that consumer unit is from the brand it used to be known as which is 'Control Gear Direct, based in Scotland'. It comes from Denmans, strange that they've put it under their Steeple brand, but haven't changed the symbol.

Great video, and nice job on the CU change. I've been using Lewden CU since January this year and find them pretty good, there are a couple of things that slightly annoy me about them though, how did you find it ?
    My wish list to Lewden......
    1) The Earth bar could do with being slightly longer, it usually only has two holes marked E so where you have both Gas and water bonds it can mess up your CPC identification, and requires re-lablebling.
    2) be nice if they could supply a mixed colour label in the stickers pack that comes with the CU
    3) the flappy lid only opens up to 90° so it makes my circuit chart sticker a little akward to read when I stuck inside the flap.

That board looks quite good I've been looking for a compact CU, that looks just the job.

Hi Gaz, great content as always, Why couldn't the SPD be positioned infront (to the left hand side) of the main switch?

    • @GSHElectrical

The bottom of the SPD is connected to the earth and not the bus bar hence in this form it’s at the end to the left. Wylex now has an SPD that connects at the bottom to the bus bar which make more sense 👍.

I think you misunderstood, I mean far left in its completed form after you changed sides with the main switch, not bus bar side. 👍

Are the cable entry holes in the rear of the board going to be filled with some kind of fire sealant? Thanks

do you need phone to supplier to de-energize supply cables that go to the main switch ?

In Malta, electricity meters come fitted with a 40A double pole MCB (don't know whether it is a B or C curve). It is downstream of a TT servicehead with a 40A fuse. When fitting a Type 2 surge protection device, do you think it would still be necessary to install overcurrent protection for the SPD? Given the 2 OCP devices before CU, I would think that I can safely place the SPD upstream of the double pole MCB in the CU itself. What are your thoughts?
    Thanks.

    Hey gaz!
Was nobody bothered about the termination of armoured braid to earth?
Also I’m i right in saying that you don’t have to stick that circuit chart sticker on the db as the certificate can provide further information? I know there’s a check box for it on schedule of inspections
    Cheers mate wait for reply!

Hi, we like the sticker with the circuit chart information on the board. The QS made all the necessary improvements as we were assessing not teaching on the day Bradley and the video didn’t indicated if the learner had passed the assessment.

Onsite guide Page 99 , consumer units in dwellings
And the health and safety executive’s note in BS7671,
Both ignored yet again, Sod it it’s old so I will change it.

Great vid, but you've got to love the regulations sometimes, an the way they are blindly followed.
Front of unit @ 6:26 = RCD sticker that states a "a" device that should be tested six monthly. - Quote Gaz: ""Important that it's tested every six months, or half yearly"
Yet Inside it @ 6:46 = 6 devices, each that state on them "TEST MONTHLY" by the manufacturer.
    Dohh !
As it's not a temporary installation, (BS7671:2018 514.12.2 NOTE:) there's no scope to correct the wording on the sticker to reflect the increased testing frequency. Or any way to modify the wording that there are multiple devices that need testing, without being no-compliant to the regulation itself. (Unless you are meant to fit 6 of the stickers, as you could interpret the wording of the regulation in that way ! )
