As a kid I remember our outside sewer vent spilling sewage onto the sidewalk when our line was clogged with roots. My job was to scrape out all the paper and poop. Fun job. Thanks for the video young man.
That has to be the most convenient main trap I have seen on this channel!!. We do it a little differently here in the UK (England). Many older houses have a covered inspection chamber with pipes leading to the respective house. AN inspection chamber usually serves two houses unless it's a detached property. The Vent Stack is higher than the property itself and sits at the start of the circuit, with toilets in-between. Grey water (sink, washing machine, bath, shower) feed into the same inspection chamber but via a route seperate to the brown water waste, though this is not a hard and fast rule. Some properties with an external vent stack will feed everything directly into the stack which rises up the side of the building, goes down to underground level and exits into the inspection chamber. From there, it feeds into the main sewer line.
How nice it must have been to have a breath of fresh from outside as you were unclogging that trap. That explosion and the giant swimming poopy 💩made me shout and jump out of my seat, startling my cat who was on my lap watching all the fun. But she forgives you (😂🤣🙀). (My partner just called me disgusting...)
@@NYDRAINS Ah okay so I can confirm ours are 6" then. I know the ones in NY are smaller, but they look cooler. Are they all brass or is it just the caps that are brass?
If you have any cast-iron at all anywhere in your system, then you should not be using Charmin, Angel Soft or any of the other quilted toilet paper! Cottonelle is a very good toilet paper to use! Take it from me, I’ve been a master plumber for a very long time and have seen it all!
Wow!! That was an unexpected amount of scale built up in the trap!! Those old rusty lines probably need replacing? You did a great job getting all that nastiness out of the pipe! I was a little worried at how slow the water was draining away though. Will it be OK like that?
Quick question. For the air foot pedal, how exactly do you change it if I buy another foot pedal from Spartan? Cause mines kind of inflated looks like it have a dent lol and it doesn’t work as good as it used to.
A decent situation for the home owner.... a pit in the garage where it couldn't spill everywhere.... and they weren't flushing a ton of wipes. Looks like a jetting of the lines might give it some more life.
You are my hero plunging your hand to clean out the bottom of the main trap. I recall a sewer maintenance contractor I would use in south Queens NYC that had a spoon type scooper he would use get all the the debris out of the bottom of the main trap. Was this a one off or is this something that you are aware of or would use???
I would rather use my hand to feel what's down there or use a vacuum. Once or twice, I felt a break in the trap that was bad. I wouldn't have felt it otherwise 😉
dumb question. when did US drainage systems start using, or stopped using those cast iron plugs. seems like an ancient method. I love the acoustics when you hammer them off lol
Well you sure had to dig a lot of old soil for to get to those caps. It's a shame they didn't grow into bigger caps when they were first put in.....people forgot to water their caps and put fresh soil and poop to help them out. Yes I am making a gardening reference. ;)

Thanks Amy 👍

Great job Don.
Thanks Rodal 👍
The drains in NY seem so small! I live in Phoenix, Arizona and I'm pretty sure we have either 4" or 6" sewer lines. My house doesn't clog very often!
All the drain you're seeing in the video are 4"

Fresh Air outside today. That's a winner. Better than having a basement apartment blockage lacking airflow.

Eventually, in the long run, yes. The pipes are pretty old. I'm sure it will be fine.
Thanks for another interesting video!
My pleasure!

Definitely

It has a clamp at each end. Just try unplugging and plug it back. That might do the trick 😉
@@NYDRAINS do you have to take the clamps off or pull out the plug hose by hand?
@MoonkaiYT either way should work

How come I never see the auger go in one side of the trap but doesn’t come out the other side? Is the cable flexible enough?
It's tough but possible.
