Well done for discovering Flamborough and Bempton Brendan. I live in Yorkshire and these are some of my favourite locations to visit. There are puffins but they tend to be difficult to see, much easier to photograph the Gannets. Really liked your enthusiasm for the place, sometimes us locals need reminding of what we have nearby and are able to access quite easily. Loved the landscape photos you took, it really is a fantastic location. I agree with Lynne, if you really want to get up close and personal with puffins, you would be advised to go to the Farne islands in Northumberland, it’s literally puffin heaven, honestly you will get all the puffin photos you’d ever need. Thank you for this video, I loved it.
I had a little adventure this weekend myself on the North Yorkshire coast, one of my favourite escapes out of the city (I live in Hull). Bempton Cliffs is a great place for bird photography because there is an RSPB reserve there! Glad you think Yorkshire is as stunning as I do!
Puffins!! The bird sanctuary here in Cape St. Mary's, Newfoundland is Puffin Paradise! ..also home to Northern Gannets and a bunch of other seabirds! ..but Puffins and Gannets are two of my favourite birds! Cool vid Brendan! Better luck next time..lol :) Cheers
How beautiful that is. I've never seen puffins either, but seabirds are amazing birds to photograph. Next Saturday I'm going on this sunset cruise to watch thousands of Shearwater birds coming back to the cliffs. It's amazing as these birds fly from Malta and even as far as Libya, to get their food, flying all day and then being back at the Malta cliffs just before sunset. So you see all these thousands of birds land on the water and wait. As soon as sunset happens, they all fly off to their respective nests and feed their babies. It's just an amazing experience that I try to photograph every year. It isn't easy with my tiny lens as we stay pretty far but it's still worth it.
We were at Bempton on the 8th July, it's one of our favourite places. Just to the left of the Grandstand viewpoint where you started off was an adult puffin with a puffing (puffin chick), that was pretty special as you don't often get to see puffling in daylight. If you want to see more puffins than you can count then go to the Farne Islands from May to July, you're almost tripping over them.
I saw and photographed the only puffin I have ever seen at Bempton Cliffs 2 years ago. As with you though Brendan, they were so far away (and so tiny). I ended up just pointing and shooting in the hope of capturing one image and then having to super crop the photo to prove that there was actually a puffin there somewhere! You were lucky there was no one else around; it was heaving with crowds when I was there.
Nice video Brendan! I live in the UK and went to Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough for the first time about a week ago. I was in awe at how amazing it was, the landscape, the birds it was just awesome!!
I nearly went there this weekend but the weather wasn't looking great so changed my mind and went around the Peak District. Will try again next weekend hopefully
I'm so glad you finally got to see puffins after missing out on them at the Faroe Islands last year! That scenery along the English coast is absolutely breathtaking!
Not been to that part of the country so far , but there are some stunning locations in the uk. I love the Lake District and down the south west into Devon. Nice Vlog and images
Awesome! We have a big seabird colony near us too, and I often get up early and go there before work, the landscapes are awesome and there is something hypnotic about watching 100,000 seabirds flying around without any other people there. If you ever come up to NE Scotland again, check out Fowlsheugh, with epic sunrise locations at Dunnottar Castle and Crawton Waterfall right next door. If you loved Bempton you'd be blown away.
Love your excitement Brendan 👍 If you come back next year get yourself to Seahouses & take trip to the Farne Islands ....you will be blown away by the Puffins & Gannets & all the other birds who's names I can't recall 😊
Bempton is awesome. Went there last week for the first time and was blown away. Like you missed the puffins by a couple of weeks but did get a half decent shot of one. The gannets were amazing the landscape is incredible. Going back again tomorrow to see what else I can see. Great video 😀
Sorry to say, but I am not at all impressed with her photography, being a professional wildlife photographer myself. E.g. Kevin Morgans is a much better photographer that has an ongoing photography project for puffins.
You’re videos are always inspiring. Thank you for sharing your passion and skill. I’m going to photograph the puffins in Maine this year and hoping I have better luck... lol.
Love cliffs like this the noise is so amazing! You should go to the orkneys in Scotland, beautiful cliffs and seabirds and loads of history too definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been before.
In Iceland at the right time of the year, June and July there are a lot of puffins. Vestmannaeyjar islands at the southern part of Iceland is a good location.
I just saw my first puffin last weekend in Wales. Absolutely a bucket list tick. Enjoy the Peaks tomorrow or whenever you are here. I live on the edge of the Peaks, so if I see you around, I will certainly say hello! (It's pretty frickin' big. ha)
Learnt the same lesson last night, my 6 year old came out last night with me I got no decent photos but spending time with him was so much better than any photo I could have taken
I've never taken a Puffin photo either, but I do have friends who have! and my suggestion would be Skomer Island. They said you could get within feet of them.Lundy is good too and has lots of other great stuff to photograph.
If you want to photo puffins go to Scotland and take a boat trip to the Isle of May in mid June. They walk across the paths in front of you. Also the cliff top is level with the sea stacks , allowing great flight shots etc. There’s anything up to 90000 puffins there so you should get lucky! you have to remember that they’re really quit small compared to other seabirds but great fun to watch!
Can recommend the Farne Islands for Puffins, and even better (IMHO) is a boat trip from Mull in Scotland to the Trenshnish Isles. At the right time of year (mid April to mid / end of July) you are literally inches from hundreds if not thousands of Puffins on Lunga island. Plus the scenery is stunning - well worth a trip if you’re ever in the area at that time of year.
So true, I completely agree with you. I used to get so hung up on always getting perfect images otherwise it wouldn’t be a good photography trip. I’ve since learned that enjoying the moment and the experience is much more important and if I get a good image, well that’s a bonus. Even the not so good images, well if they have a memory attached to them to me they’re perfect! BTW I’ve never seen a puffin either!
Bempton Cliffs Yorkshire in May is the best time, the Puffins are just arriving, I was there this May but the Puffins were out my 200mm lens range, I will try again next year with 400mm
I think you accomplished your goal, that is a nice picture of a puffin, undercover with all those rocks. I went to Iceland and searched for them as well and could only see them flying very far away. Nice little birds.
Congrats on the apt! That’s awesome! Man, that transition in colors from blue sky and water to the gloom up north lol. The latter is my preference though. Awesome shots overlooking those cliffs and birds!
I spotted the Puffin at 7:53. Not sure if you already cropped the photo, but maybe you can crop it a bit more and finally say you were able to shoot a Puffin. It looked like an awesome area and the bonus was that you had it all to yourself!
I would fly to NFLD just to shoot Northern Gannets! Then out to Kamloops for Bison and Bighorn Sheep. And up to where ever there's caribou and elk. All these are on my to do list.
Nice to see your up my patch, only 40 minutes drive from my home. (Scarborough) The 1st image is known as The Drinking Dinosaur, plenty of photo opportunities all around Flamborough and Bempton. Nice set images and vlog.
Nice video Brendan. I was at flamborough this morning had a great. Wish I had gone to bempton though. Looks a lot better landscape wise. Really struggled for a shot at flamborough. Thanks.
Saw and photographed (poorly) my first ever puffin back in April, which was a bit early for them at Bempton Cliffs , not far from Scarborough. Got myself a longer lense as a result :-)

"Does it look cool?" is my new favourite rule of composition
For puffins in GB, try either the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth, or Lunga in the Treshnish Isles off the Isle of Mull on the West Coast. Both are puffin paradise and readily accessible by scheduled boat trips. The Farne Islands are are also very good for the number of puffins (and other sea birds) but the money-grabbing English National Trust allow so many visitors on to them that they get grossly overcrowded and are just not a fun place to be for photography any more.
Timely video! I’m going to see Puffins next week but I’m going to be on a boat. The boat is a stabilized boat for a smooth ride but there will still be some movement. Any tips for settings? My biggest lens is 100-400. How fast of a shutter speed? Not sure how close we will be but I’m pretty sure the birds will be along the rocks as a background. Hard to say.
Tanner S I tried to photograph puffins from a boat in Nova Scotia. I will tell you they are speedy little birds that fly close to the water. It was really hard to catch them in flight with my equipment. Have a really fast lens and hope the seas are calm that day. And good luck. I called puffins the hummingbirds of the water because they moved so quickly and they were much smaller than I expected.
Martha Guenther Thank you very much for the reply. The lens is not fast at all. Good information here. Obviously would be easier on land. I mostly photograph landscapes and have only had limited success with birds. Static birds. Thank you. 🙂
So green with envy now, with living on Vancouver island for the past 20 yrs or so, I was born about an hour north of Bempton and it is in my sights for Puffin shots, which I hope to do before I leave the planet - none of us are getting any younger and nobody gets out alive ...... thanks for the look here for now...........I still feel the mouth of the Tyne calling my name - nowt wrong with a Geordie as I would have no trouble dealing with Tom H up there !
Other good places in UK to see Puffins is Lundy Island in the Bristol channel, Kearvaig mountain hut Bothy up in the Highlands on Cape wrath there a rock on the beach where you can see them you can get a boat from Durness over there. The very best place and remote place is The Shiants isles you can get a boat there there also a private hut which you can stay in free with permission of the owner. Check them out. Richard
:D so nice to see how entertained you are by those birds / puffins. Nice episode - like always! Is there something broken on your gimbal? I got weird audio sounds.
Hi Brendan, interesting that you posted this at this time. I hope you don’t mind, but I need to share some information with my fellow photographers. I’m going to be putting this comment on all the photography channels I’ve subscribed to, if only to raise awareness of the importance of looking after your camera gear whilst on your travels. I have just in the last hour come home from a wonderful cruising trip to the Nordic Fiords. However, the whole experience was tainted by a single event that occurred at a beautiful, peaceful place called Flåm. To keep this as brief as I can, the camera bag I have is very small; it’s a Lowepro Slingshot. My camera, kit lens and various small bits of kit go inside the bag, while my wide-angle lens and set of Lee filters are attached to the outside in their respective carrying cases; both robustly attached, or so I thought to the main carry bag. During our second trip out of the day, my wife daughter and I decided to take some family snap shots and during this time my wife and I became aware of a young couple with back packs; nothing odd in that, other than the young lady had a small backpack on her back and a very large one attached around her front. My wife later mentioned that the couple acted very suspiciously and appeared to laugh at me and the amounts of equipment I was carrying or using. I didn’t say anything to her about that at the time as I didn’t want to appear self-conscious. They initially walked ahead of us and I can no longer recall seeing them, but my wife later stated that she thought they were following us around through the all shops we entered. Later that afternoon I found what looked like my first, likely, decent composition of the day, so I set my camera; which I had continued to carry in my hand, onto my tripod, only to find my Lee filter bag had been snatched off the back of my camera bag. I don’t think I need to tell any of you how much that hurt. It’s taken me 4 years to collect all of the kit I have, much of it funded by selling older, but no less precious gear; the beginning of my Lee kit also partially, but kindly funded by my late mother-in-law. Thankfully the lens and its case were still intact. I looked everywhere, hoping that the filter kit may have somehow become loose and dropped to the floor, but to no avail; they were gone. Believe it or not, all the local people I approached for assistance appeared to be as upset as I was and advised me to give an account to the local information centre. The security team on board ship were also very supportive and have filed a report that will assist with any insurance claims, and that my friends is the most difficult thing to swallow; I don’t think their loss will be covered by my travel insurance. Ouch that hurts even more. To say I feel stupid and naive is an understatement. I’ll even admit that as a fifty-seven-year-old man I have cried my eyes out in private. So take my good advice, buy a decent enough camera bag that holds all your gear and more importantly make sure you don’t scrimp on insurance. PS I am quite happy to remove this if you think it inappropriate for your channel. Thank you for reading
ive just been there and could only see puffins through the telescope at bempton cliffs, get Thomas to take you to the farne islands you wont fail there :)
Haven’t been to Bempton or Flamborough for years - must put it in my diary for next Spring. My best puffin photos ever were last July in Iceland - Latrabjarg at the far westernmost tip of the Westfjords, stunning birds and stunning sea cliffs, well worth the drive 🙂
I know that you are very careful (and selective) about what and how much gear you carry, but today would have been a good day to have a good crop sensor camera (7Dii?) in your camera bag. That would likely have given you the reach you needed to capture the Puffin with an image that you like. With very few drawbacks, you could have used your 100-400 like a 160-640mm lens. Would it have been the perfect solution? Maybe not, but it would be nice for those times when 400mm isn't quite long enough.
I used to sell puffins - the books not the birds. There was a Puffin children’s book club that had a password: Sniffup to which the other person would reply Spotera (Puffins are tops, backwards)

Hi Brendan, vid of the day recommendation, I’m honoured. Thank you xx
Heading here in the morning. Not too far away from where I live. Great place with the right light and the puffins are good fun to watch.

It's an amazing place,I'm in cleethorpes but try to get up there as often as I can.😀
True & I love it
You captured one it was just in a "Where's Waldo" sort of image. Can't believe you had that all to yourself, gorgeous area!
Great when you finally got to the point!
Wow, what an amazing location!!
So Farne Islands it will be for next year, to get your puffin shots!! The landscape still looks stunning at this place, even without the puffin shot!!
Puffins!! The bird sanctuary here in Cape St. Mary's, Newfoundland is Puffin Paradise! ..also home to Northern Gannets and a bunch of other seabirds! ..but Puffins and Gannets are two of my favourite birds!
Cool vid Brendan! Better luck next time..lol :)

Dying to see lots of puffins. Saw one little one in the Faroes

Jesus christ I was watching this channel back in 11k like 2 or 3 years ago and I just though of it and came back, great job on all of the growth man
Thanks for coming back! And thanks for supporting me back at 11k😎😎
And BvS sees a Puffin!! Noice!! Amazing vlog dude, that second locations looked insane. Cliffs for days. ⛰️
Thank you for sharing these great sceneries with us!

Aww wow Brendan awsome shots, love them all. You really captured the essence of that stunning place.
Awesome locations. The sanctuary is insane!!
At least you’ve now seen wild puffins, even if you’ve not managed a great photo yet 👍
An amazing place,I live down the coast from there and first went there with school about 30 years ago and just fell in love with it.great video.
I nearly went there this weekend but the weather wasn't looking great so changed my mind and went around the Peak District. Will try again next weekend hopefully
Excited for more video
Thanks buddy!

So many locations in the UK, and so many that are totally unknown to non-Brits.
Glad to see you visited the best county in the UK
Your first picture was of ‘the drinking dinosaur’. That’s what’s it’s known as! Love it.
Wow crazy schedule 😱
"Nuffin like a Puffin"...I think that says it all.
Awesome! Brendan it might be late this year but if you can make it next year the frame island that the place to go
Team up with Kim Grant. She has taken a lot of beautiful puffin photos!
Excellent idea, Kim's photos are very good and she for sure knows her area
Sorry to say, but I am not at all impressed with her photography, being a professional wildlife photographer myself. E.g. Kevin Morgans is a much better photographer that has an ongoing photography project for puffins.
@@Metal4everYAY I like her puffin photos. Besides, he will be taking his own photos, not Kim....

Get to the Farne Islands in April - June, around 40,000 pairs of Puffins all around you as well as many other birds.

All the best!
The bird count at Bempton Cliffs is 500,000. Before lockdown I go up every week because I live about 5 miles away. Keep up the good work.
You’ve got to go to the Farne Islands Brendan. Puffins galore!
Which camera u using??
Hi Brendan, what are your VDOs and photo editing you currently using?
Great to see you in my local area, photographing our local "Dinosaur" :)
Now you are thinking why did I buy in Portugal when I could have chosen Yorkshire. The answer is the weather 😊
ive just been there and could only see puffins through the telescope at bempton cliffs, get Thomas to take you to the farne islands you wont fail there :)
Brendan, looking forward to see images from Mongolia ....
I'm confused.... who was the dude on the cliff at 7:55 if not a puffin? Or is that just not a banger quality puffin photo so it didn't count?
Haha. Just not "the" puffin photo I was hoping for.
Lots of Puffins in Iceland!
Best Rule of Photography ever: Does it look cool
The only “Rule” that shouldn’t be ignored.
Mate - you need to go to the Farne Islands for puffins; you can literally walk among 'em.
🌻
The two animals I want to shoot are puffins and moose! I will plan trips just for those two animals!!
Go to Newfoundland in June and you'll definitely get both!
@@BrendanvanSon The moose you can shoot anytime, there's too many here and nobody will be mad, but don't hurt the Puffins, lol ;-p
Maybe not as your wanted, but im looking at a puffin in your photo at 7:53
Name of the songs pliz????
early is always the best
Next time you visit your mate in the North East of England take a trip to the Farne Islands if you want puffins
3rd view, 1st like and first comment on what looks like another awesome video
Nice work!! Here's 98643 points!
@@BrendanvanSon Yay WooHoo, I spend the points on more awesome videos
Time to find a 1200mm lens.
Haha!
@@BrendanvanSon ok a 600mm and a 2x teleconverter
Good job Dear friend,
i am a photogrpher from INDIA
There you go Brendan I said you could get Puffins in the UK and could save you a ticket to Iceland !! ;-)
Wait, I think I see a puffin! 🤓
Hello Brendan, you certainly get your monies worth out of your passport. I now look forward very much to Sri Lanka...
Check out First Man Photography. He was just at this spot.
Ok Brendan, so we're all clear, Farne Islands, Northumberland, UK, April, May time, have a word with Tom, he'll take you. Thank me later :)
I used to sell puffins - the books not the birds. There was a Puffin children’s book club that had a password: Sniffup to which the other person would reply Spotera (Puffins are tops, backwards)
