Pebble might be quick and cheap but they are a pain to walk on, especially in bare feet!

You destroyed/killed the bushes? It's very sad...
I’m not sure if they ended up killing the bushes, but they might’ve been able to be transplanted with that amount of roots, being cut back hard like that, and watering consistently and deeply after transplanting.
