Thanks for more encouraging comments. We are having an RNLI safety check on the boat this week and hope to be setting off again soon for our 2017 cruise. We don't know where we are going. We plan each leg carefully but the cruise as a whole is a mystery, even to us! We have no idea where we will go.
What a marvellous summer album. Beautiful boat, I'm more than a touch envious, but great story telling in the good old fashioned vein of "here's our holiday snaps". As a Solent sailor it's good to see further down the coast and see how it can be done in a wonderful leisurely style. Here's to a great 2017 for you both.
We have what is called a "dry stack" exhaust, essentially an exhaust pipe fixed to the side of the mast, so it's true you can hear it on the flybridge - it's not as loud as the video makes it seem. But we don't get any noise in the cockpit, and no diesel fumes either, which you can sometimes get from a wet exhaust.
loved this thanks for sharing used to go the isle of white on holidays as a small child. Will you be sharing you journey as you go on your cruises? and do you have plans to cross the north sea to visit the fjords on Norway at any point?
Yes we will share our cruises on TH-cam again in 2017. Haven't gone anywhere yet! We have no idea whether we will go north, south, east or west. We plan one passage at a time.
See the data here: www.nordhavn.com/models/40/ (one US Gallon is about 3.8 litres). Probably accurate for our boat but we can't be sure because we don't know how much our diesel heater and generator consume. But we have noticed that in 2016 we used less diesel on our boat than we did in our car and the cost was minuscule compared to the other costs of running a boat.
The stabilisers are pretty much silent unless you open the lockers where the equipment is and listen carefully. The sound on the video was coming from the autopilot or more precisely the hydraulic steering and is really only audible in the wheelhouse. On the passage up the Bristol Channel in this video, early in our ownership, I had the autopilot parameters wrong for the conditions and the steering was working harder than necessary. The autopilot is a Furuno Navpilot 511 and there are parameters which enable the autopilot to be set up to suit the conditions. I'm better at this nowadays. The pictures and video don't really do justice to the height and period of the swell during that passage which were bound to have a noticeable effect on any 40ft motorboat. We've been in worse conditions since then and it's amazing what the boat will handle, you just have to be sensitive to the control systems and helm the boat sensibly.
All Nordhavn boats which are built nowadays have hydraulic stabilisers fitted at the factory. There were some early models which used paravanes instead of hydraulic stabilisers but that was before the N43 came into the fleet. Our boat has ABT TRAC 220 hydraulic stabilisers.
Yes, we still have this boat, but I haven't posted any other videos except this short clip of departing from our berth, shot by a friend: th-cam.com/video/aZeevVDHWtg/w-d-xo.html
Yes we still have the boat. At the last count we have visited 56 different harbours, ports, marinas and anchorages since we started in 2015. The furthest north and east we have been is Lowestoft, the furthest south Guernsey, and the furthest west Waterford in Ireland. Just coastal cruising, no ocean crossings for us! Currently based in Plymouth. I keep thinking about doing another piece for TH-cam but the standard being achieved by others is so high nowadays I'm not sure I've got the nerve!
@@Obbsserver wow sounds like you’ve been busy. Are you still happy with the 40 now you have had a number of seasons with it. The reason I ask is I’m looking to buy one at the moment, as my next boat will be my last to take me into early retirement and I’ve narrowed it down to the nordhavn 40. I would love the new 41 but it’s out of my price range and I think the 40 is a great boat for a couple to cruise on. Would you agree ? and any advice would be much appreciated. I thought your little video was superb they don’t all need to be polished to be entertaining.
@@simonharms2812 Thanks for the kind words about the video. Yes, after 6 years of ownership we are still happy with the boat, and it is a great vessel for a couple using it for coastal cruising. We have never seen another boat that would suit us better. Choosing this boat was one of the best decisions we have ever made. We actually had a stroke of luck because at the time we had a choice of two 40s, Coracle (then called Orplid) and Iolair which was more expensive and outside our very strained budget. It turns out that our boat was the better choice for us because it has a flybridge. People say this makes it look too tall, and I wouldn't disagree, but my goodness we do appreciate it and would hate to be without it. The new 41 is a great success but the 40 has lots of features that we prefer and even if we had the money to change we would not do so. The problem you have is that not many 40s were sold in Europe and they don't change hands very often. Nordhavn Europe sent an email to every European owner last autumn asking if anyone wanted to sell and nobody was tempted. If you really want a 40 you might have to buy in the USA, ship it over, pay the VAT, and convert the electrical supply to 240v/50Hz. I don't know whether the figures would stack up. If you are not already talking to Neil and Phillip at Nordhavn Europe you should do so.
What a lovely trip.
Wonderful to see owners enjoying a classic N40.
Best boat ever.. Regards from Greece!

Really enjoyed this video/photo diary. Tks for posting on TH-cam. Cheers,

Great taste of what we intend to do in a short while. Thanks for sharing and look forward to your posting for 2017
Thanks for this, it was great. Surprised how much I could here the diesels on the fly bridge.

Great video! 👏👏👍👍👍 Our like # 25
Thank you for sharing... nicely done =]
Thank you for sharing that with us. Very good photo,s. Good luck on your future travels and Happy new year.
Thanks for the encouragement - and Happy New Year to you too!
Awesome. Safe journeys!
Thanks for sharing.
Awesome, thanks! And would love to see the interior:)
Thank you for sharing.
Very nice, thank you.
just a question. In your mind a stabilizator is an element of confort or also of security. Thankz for an answer
Stabilisers are there for both comfort and security. A slow heavy boat with a round bilge is going to roll terribly without them.

How is the fuel economy in a Nordhavn 40 and what is the actual range of it?

When the boat is corkscrewing, is the whining sound the sound from the stabilizers or the autopilot or something else ?

CAN YOU HAVE STABILIZERS FITTED THAT IS ON THE 43
