    I'm so glad there are so many views and comments today. Elise's site MUST grow! She teaches techniques we can use as older women as well a color theory we can use, rather than push new products all the time.

    For the first time in my life, I bought myself makeup and cosmetics. I bought myself nail polish and lipstick, and started using them as a whim. I don't know if I made a mistake. I make myself happy with the little things. I started watching makeup videos to learn how to do makeup.

    My 2 favorite, most beautiful places are my sun garden and my shade garden. They give me a creative outlet and peace (and loads of exercise!)

      Ann, you are so very kind. Thank you! Ahh, your gardens sound wonderful! Especially during this crazy time they must bring you such comfort and solace. Whenever we travel, we try to find a city's botanical garden to visit. And it's fun to hear my husband (who used to have a part time landscape design business) rattle off the Latin names of many plants!.

    I’ve been using eye shadow as liner, so I was happy to see you recommend it. I need to watch this video while I apply my eye makeup! Tilting the head sounds like a great tip, I struggle with blending. I think my two most beautiful places are the Grand Canyon and Saint Mary Lake in Glacier National Park.

      Hi, Harriet-- Thank you so much. But I must admit I have to chuckle a bit, because like so many of us, I haven't been to a salon in months and I'm really struggling with my hair. What you can't see is the tiny nub of a "ponytail" in back, and the numerous bobby pins in back somewhat keeping the wispies in place. The curls on top are also a mini hairpiece! lol

    Thank you Elise for some great tips! I’ve been using eyeshadow as eyeliner for years, especially for a day look. It’s quick and easy, mistake-proof, and gives a softer look. I also loved your idea of blending your blush, contour, and foundation with a brush when you’ve finished your makeup, to blend the edges. Blended edges really is one of the secrets of natural-looking makeup. I’ll be trying that out tomorrow!

    • @EliseMarquamJahns
      @EliseMarquamJahns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Ron--Yes, I so agree that using eye shadow as eyeliner gives such a nice, soft look AND is so much easier to apply! I hardly ever use an actual eyeliner pencil any more. I hope you find blending the edges of your blush and contour with a brush to be helpful. I think it's pretty amazing what a few strokes of the brush can do! Best wishes.

      @@EliseMarquamJahns I have to second Ros' comment. that is exactly what I was going to say. I even have the same brush that you used. Somewhat coincidentally I saw a picture of myself today from about 30 years ago (posted by a family member on Facebook) and while I wish I still looked like that, I couldn't help also wishing that I could go back and blend my blush. Yikes, it wasn't really blended much at all!

      @@doreenzimmerman7410 Yes, sometimes those images from the past come back to haunt us! I remember seeing some pictures of myself with eye shadow that was terribly creased. Oh how I wish they'd made eye primer back in those days! And to top it off, I think it was that bright blue eye shadow that was so popular back in the 80s. Ouch!

      @@doreenzimmerman7410 Yes, so much (thank goodness) in the cosmetic world has improved. And it's wonderful now that there are so many great drugstore options as well. I do cringe when I think of that thick pancake foundation from many years past.

    Wow… thanks for all the good ideas. I just bought some setting spray, but it made my eyes water, I’m going to try it with a sponge. I use eyeliner with eyeshadow over it to soften and set it a little. I would be interested in knowing the best mascara to use. I have trouble with it smudging onto my lower eye, probably because of the moisturizer? Not the look I was going for.

    Hi Elise, how do you get your hair back like that? Very pretty! Absolutely need to know as I have chin length, layered hair and have no idea how to keep it back. Help!

    • @EliseMarquamJahns
      @EliseMarquamJahns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Ann--I had to chuckle a bit at your question since there's much in back you can't see! Like many people, I haven't been to a salon for a haircut in many months, so hair that was short last January has grown quite a bit longer. I pulled my hair back in a low "ponytail." I have an elastic around it and have only a little nub of hair sticking out of the elastic. And since the back of my hair used to be in a wedge, I have many wispies along the back which are held in place by a multitude of bobby pins! And the curls on top are a small hairpiece which doesn't even cover the "nub" of hair. I could never leave the house this way! So I'm afraid this info isn't much help! Best wishes!

      Hi, Debbie--I'm so glad you found this video helpful! I must admit I hardly ever use an eyeliner pencil any more since I love using eye shadow as my liner. I hope you'll end up liking this approach too. But as I mentioned in the video, not all eye shadow work well as eye liner, so it's a matter of just testing out the formula to see how well it works for you. And thanks so much for sharing your favorite places. I will definitely add these two to my bucket list. I've been to quite a few places in Florida, but not St. Pete Beach. Best wishes!

    Hi Elise, thank you for this video, my beautiful TH-cam friend. I watch a lot of beauty videos but I find your content is really the most helpful. I have been using dark brown eyeliner, as you suggested, and I was surprised how much of a difference it makes. I was mostly using smudged-out black or a coppery brown. Thank you so much for that! The mixing warm and cool colors really hit home because that is what I've been trying to get better at and now I have an exact demonstration to follow. I am excited about that. Oh, I see you've asked another hard question. The first place that came to mind is Niagara Falls, especially at night. I was mesmerized as a child but have never gotten back there. I have seen a lot of beautiful beaches and gardens but I am going to pick the New York City skyline, again especially at night. I just love lights and colors reflected in water.

    • @EliseMarquamJahns
      @EliseMarquamJahns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Doreen. I'm so very glad you're liking the dark brown eyeliner option. As I rewatched this video I think I over complicated the process and made it seem harder than it actually is to do. Just adding a simple quick touch of a warm color to a cool color or vice versa and then blending is really all that's needed. It gave me goose bumps to think about the NYC skyline . . . so gorgeous. And I've not been to Niagara Falls so I think I need to add that to my bucket list! So lovely hearing from you, my friend. Stay well.

    • @EliseMarquamJahns
      @EliseMarquamJahns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Margaret--Great question! It's really just a matter of personal preference. However, complementary colors (opposite each other on the color wheel) always look great together (e.g. blue and orange), but they can also be quite dramatic. It all depends on how bright they are and how much of each color is used. A very light orange with a light blue will look very different from deeper versions of those colors. You might want to give a few different color combinations a try to see what you like. Sometimes playing with colors that you might not necessarily choose first can open up some fun options.

    Hi Elise, as always thank you for your lovely demeanor in your most informative videos. Just wanted to share that I have had great success using Bobbi Brown eye shadow stick as eye liner. I use the color "shadow" in a super thin layer along the outer half of my lashline, which I then very lightly buff/blend with a brush into the lashline to create a less defined smokier look. As far as your question about gorgeous places.....my vote the beaches of Turks & Caicos and the view from the Pacific Coast Highway along Big Sur.

    Interesting technique for mixing liquid blush with moisturizer.. would have liked to have seen how you mixed the moisturizer with the blush, as I could quite visualize that 🤷‍♀️ but I used to add moisturizer to my liquid foundation when I was younger as I really wanted a natural non foundation made up look.. so doing the same with blush makes perfect sense to me, I just can’t visualize exactly how to do this with the blush.. thanks as always for a great channel. Your voice is so soothing to listen to

    • @EliseMarquamJahns
      @EliseMarquamJahns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, RoseAnn-- Yes, mixing moisturizer with foundation is a wonderful technique too! The technique of mixing moisturizer with blush works especially well with cream blushes in a stick formulation. I usually put just a little dab of moisturizer on the back of my hand and some blush on the back of my hand and then mix the two together well on the back of my hand with a brush. I've found this to be the most fool proof method. Hope this helps. And I'll try to demonstrate this in a future video. Always wonderful to hear from you RoseAnn. Thanks so much for watching! Best wishes.

    Do you recommend for mature women to line the bottom lash line? Or the waterline of the eye? I’ve read that lining the bottom of the eye, makes the eye appear smaller. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

    • @EliseMarquamJahns
      @EliseMarquamJahns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi--Thanks for your great question. It is true that lining the entire bottom area of the eye can make the eyes look smaller--especially if the eyeliner is a very dark color. But at the same time, this can be part of a beautiful smoky eye look which can be gorgeous. There are certainly no hard and fast rules in makeup, but on a day-to-day basis, I recommend lining just the outer 1/3 of the bottom lash line in a lighter color than the top lash line (and feathering it out so there's no harsh looking stopping point). By just lining this outer 1/3 of the eye, it connects to the upper lash line (giving a cohesive look) and softly increases the whole "real estate" area of the eye by creating a bit of a shadow. And lightly adding mascara to the bottom lashes also helps.

    Aaaccckkk - this gets confusing for me. While I really think I am a cool undertone, I have blue eyes and palettes for blue eyes always have coppers and warm colors to make the eye stand out. Those are warm colors and again I think I am a cool undertone... So then what color blush and lipstick does one wear? Any suggestions would be appreciated and I would to do a Zoom consult with you and of course I insist on paying you.
