The Original Good Vibes band. The live concerts were "happenings", where many fans followed the band from city to city, hoping to get into the show, and the Band played a different set list every night. And the fans recorded the shows on reel to reel tape and later on, cassettes, and the Band encouraged that. It was such a privilege to be surrounded by open hearted humans, who experienced and shared love and peace and joy and happiness. For those who do not understand this, I feel deep sorrow. The Dead evoke the emotions that can be shared communally. If you feel that then you are a part of our family and we welcome you.
Thanks Sarah for Grateful Dead reactions. Some really good suggestions these are "live grateful dead selections: Morning Dew from 5/8/77; from the same show try Dancin' In the streets. I will look for some other good selections and will put them in comments of future reactions
Grateful Dead, so much going on in their music. One thing no ever talks about, is the almost Cosmic sadness in Jerry's voice and guitar playing. What is this song really about? One can imagine; Sugaree, a former lover who has kicked him to the curb; is Jerry angry? No just sad, sorrowful, at such at deep level its hard to comprehend. But is he vengeful? No, he's actually so humble, his only request is that she forget up him utterly.
Help on the Way > Slipknot > Franklin’s Tower from this show are wonderful. Also Crazy Fingers and Eyes of the World. So glad you enjoyed my fave song and got the GD vibe.
I spent most of the decade of the 1980s listening to the Dead. Saw them many times, mostly in California but also a very awesome show in 1984 at what was then called 'Pine Knob', an amphitheater outside of Detroit, Michigan in a town called Clarkston, Michigan. Nothing like the Dead's music or shows. Quite a few 'spinoff' bands have existed and also still exist with various Dead members in them.
The third song of my first Grateful Dead concert, 9/6/80 Lewiston, Maine, was "Sugaree", and IMVHO the best version of this excellent song ever. It put me on the bus for the next 15 years, going all over the Eastern half of the United States, Maine, Wisconsin, Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio, New York, Washington, D.C., because NOBODY could do it like The Dead. I STILL miss Jerry, guess I always will.
Look here, beautiful lady, if you think Sugaree was great, just know this yeah it’s good but seriously it’s not even in the top 10 of the best Grateful Dead songs ever. If you have yet to listen to Shakedown Street, Ripple, Franklin Tower, Eyes of the World, then you haven’t heard the real Grateful Dead. By the way, I loved your video. You’re a pretty lady and a whole lot cooler when you’re listening to the Grateful Dead, but I sense that you kind of feel that in the heart of your soul.
On the Sugaree topic, a song and singer you might want to listen to is "Shake Sugaree" by Elizabeth Cotten. One of the good things about being ancient is that I got to see this great performer a few times before she died. She's got a remarkable biography and produced some very simple but wonderful music.
Sarah! I love your voice. Please sing more! 😀I love to sing too. But most importantly: it was so beautiful to watch you relax into this gem by Jerry and "the boys." And when you said it sounds like therapy, I could not agree more. Music in general, yes, lifts my spirit, but the Dead are part of my fiber now and I am glad they are becoming part of yours too. Awesome reaction, love the channel. More Dead! Maybe Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Mountain"? 🥰🤩😍
Grate reaction! Written by Jerry Garcia with lyricist Robert Hunter, this was first recorded for Garcia's excellent 1972 solo album. A beautifully crafted song that captures the essence of infatuation and the all-encompassing nature of love. The heartfelt lyrics with Jerry and the band's soulful delivery create a powerful and emotional listening experience.
Hi Sarah - great reaction - first time I have seen one of your videos. I think you would love exploring this band - and probably get a great following of deadheads. Lots of passion around this band. I saw them 100 times between 1985-1995.
Please try China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider from Europe 72. - one reviewer said it was so easy and light it felt like sunlight - I think you will like it !
Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart says the band wasn't really in the music business, but that they were in the transportation business. Music was how they moved people to another spiritual level, the way a cab driver uses his cab to move people around town. Try some of the other fine suggestions!
O, this Deadhead loves you to react to my ultimate relief band... relax and enjoy! This band is live so much better, than in studio, because it is an experience, which is missing in studio.
A favorite for me.. About a pimp and prostitute. The Dead told the story or humankind. It shed light on the human experience. The are the masters of songwriting, telling a story and exploring that story. They are magic.
Well you obviously get what’s so unique about them, they just make everything all right. Dig deep, there’s no downside. Welcome to the only ones who can do what they do 😊
Therapy. Sarah was a Dead Head before she even knew them! It happens. The only bummer for these young people is that by the time they hear these musicians, they're no longer with us. :(
🎼Listen to the song “Cosmic Charlie” …how do you do? I guarantee you will love it. I’m from the Boomer generation. You know the one that wrote and played the best music you could ever or will ever listen to.
This is a really soulful version, but it doesn't rip like the Sugarees they pumped out a couple of years later. Therapy is right, though. Love to see people loving Jerry.
Sarah you are a true Sugar Magnolia, try that as next dead song or maybe Scarlet Begonias, i do not have a favorite Grateful Dead song because there are just too many great songs by these troubadours!!
Such a beautiful song, such cringeworthy lyrics. Over the years I've heard that Sugaree is an underage female groupie, a drug dealer or a pimp. I've wanted to cover it since it was first released - still can't bring myself to do it.
As I recall, Hunter said something about it at least once, but I don't remember him being very specific. What I've heard from other Deadheads most often was the groupie thing, for which I've never seen any actual evidence. The trouble for me is that I can't get it out of my mind when I hear the song, and it fits pretty well with the lyrics. I don't mean this to be a slam on the guys or on Hunter, who I think was a very smart and thoughtful writer. And believe me when I tell you, the world is none the poorer for my not doing a cover of this (or any) song. I've been playing guitar and singing for 62 years, and I'm still hoping that one day I might get good at it.

The Grateful Dead were the greatest band that's ever been.
…and ever will be.
True
A band beyond description
1000%
They are one of my top 2 along with Pink Floyd.
"It feels like therapy." Love it.
It's always a special moment, witnessing the birth of a new Deadhead. Welcome aboard!
ive probably turned on a 100. you turn on one it leads to 99 more.
Therapy for the soul, your reaction brought a smile to mine💯💯💯💯

Fabulous song. They were such a great band. Great music. Lovely reaction Sarah!
Thanks pa
Saw the Dead live numerous times, their organizers may have "took my $20 bill and vanished in the air", but it was always a hell of an experience!
Great reaction. Welcome to the best. Band and music in history
Love your reactions :)
That's why so many of us love them. Great songs straight from the heart.
Superb, glad you enjoyed this, please try "Ripple" soon. One of my all time top tunes.
Hey now. Welcome to the family. Enjoy the ride

The House Band to the biggest party in America !

I was there in Lewiston.

Loved your reaction, Sarah. Such a great comment "This sounds like therapy".
Grateful Dead is special because they songs from different genres country, rock, blues, jazz etc and so at each show you would hear all kinds of music

pawn my watch, pawn my pipe, pawn everything in this whole life, oh lordy me didn't I shake sugaree, everything I've got is done and pawn,
Catching up :)
Thanks Sarah for that beautiful reaction to a fantastic song❤

I’ve been in constant “therapy” since 1968! I don’t miss many days either! 😉
That smile at the end says it all. Your soul can't help but smile after the Dead💀⚡️🌹
This is therapy. Yes, exactly!
What an amazing song... 😎
It’s called Jerrapy. ❤
Please try China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider from Europe 72. - one reviewer said it was so easy and light it felt like sunlight - I think you will like it !
Jerry Garcia was the man, such genius an intuitive knowledge of American music.
Check out Shake Sugaree by Elizabeth Cotton & Rhiannon Giddings

Love you SD!!

jerry makes me cry with wistful joy.
It's fun to sing along with this one, isn't it? 👍😁
Jerry doesn't do one those long winding solos that he would do on this song in years to come, but for me this his best vocal performance of this song.
Sugaree is a song involving dancing. A song that tells a story.
How many Dead Heads in here? 😀 I like the dead and I played and got my sister hooked on the Dead. I created a Dead Head Monster 🤣🤣
This is the song I’ll hear when I get to Heaven.
Sarah....... please listen to Jerry while in the band "old and in the way"
Song......pig in a pen.....
🎼Listen to the song “Cosmic Charlie” …how do you do? I guarantee you will love it. I’m from the Boomer generation. You know the one that wrote and played the best music you could ever or will ever listen to.
I'm a Deadhead and I'm glad you're listening to it and you should listen to Bertha and Althea
Welcome to the Phil Zone.
Jerry's Voice Tickles The Ears🎉😊
I forgot Ripple and that guitar is from Jerry Garcia
You have just become cooler! ✌️
Do the opening Help on the Way/Slipknot!/Franklin's Tower on the same album
Here's a playlist of their songs with lyrics by Robert Hunter music.th-cam.com/play/PLXTTD72FwogkCIi5Xc1RI5qjrJvY1Ac_W.html&si=fAVM0sYKWQP_kFkY
This is a really soulful version, but it doesn't rip like the Sugarees they pumped out a couple of years later. Therapy is right, though. Love to see people loving Jerry.
It's about Robert hunter/friend leaving a drug ring they were involved in.
There are some serious rip roaring versions of this song where Jerry is on fire. Worth checking out.
Yeah man, 9/6/80 Lewiston Maine. My first Dead show. Not my last.
Sarah you are a true Sugar Magnolia, try that as next dead song or maybe Scarlet Begonias, i do not have a favorite Grateful Dead song because there are just too many great songs by these troubadours!!
Could you react to Ripple from this sublime group called Grateful Dead? I think you might like it... thanks!!
Americana
🙃🙂😉
Check out some of the ‘77 versions. They really stretched it out.
And with Donna singing sweet harmony on the choruses.
It’s weird how when any female listens to the Grateful Dead she suddenly becomes more attractive, more desirable, and 100 times cooler.
Such a beautiful song, such cringeworthy lyrics. Over the years I've heard that Sugaree is an underage female groupie, a drug dealer or a pimp. I've wanted to cover it since it was first released - still can't bring myself to do it.
Look it up. From what I understand that isn't the case;)

Not really a song, more like a groove
