I tried watching other people’s bonsai vids, but didn’t enjoy them as much as yours. You’re like the Bob Ross of bonsai. Your, “Here we go,” is like Bob’s, “Happy little trees,” and of course I think all of yours are indeed happy little trees!
That deep breath at 6:34... I have been watching your channel for over two years now, so long time lurker! I've worked my way through all your older videos and try to read most of the comments too and have gained so much enjoyment. The Zone community is awesome! So I finally had to thank you for the great content, but also allowing glimpses of your home life for us fans, little treats in the past like seeing Dandelion and the baby raccoon, the use of your daughter's piano piece when displaying a tree on the turntable, that neighbour's whip, and seeing all the hard work on the new greenhouse. I'm sure the temple ficus will flourish under your care. All the best from Coventry, UK
I'm severely depressed after a multicompartmental traumatic brain injury. I was almost murdered mistaken identity back on Halloween 31 , 2017. 2 brain surgeries, intracranial hemorhagging. And multiple skull depressed fractures. On a lot of meds but none really work too good Your videos alleviate my depressions and nightmares frequencies, believe it or not , no idea why. I do really enjoy your videos and trees tho, so thank you for that sir . The guys were caught & confessed they were after someone else' , and got 7 years state prison . But even that closure didn't help, your videos make me happy. Thanks and take care sir.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and it helps calm your mind. I hope you give bonsai a try as a hobby, I think you'll find it very relaxing and rewarding too. All the best from the Bonsai Zone and thanks for sharing your story.
I loved the jungly look of all the plants, maybe you could do something like that, a ficus growing over stones, with ferns, moss, smaller trees, and maybe small vining plants on the forest floor.
I'll be working on this planting more this coming summer, I want to get it into a smaller lighter pot, the pot it is in is so heavy! I'm hoping to make it look like a lost ancient temple growing in the middle of a jungle!
Looking really good ! That camera and lens are quite something. It was great being in the Bonsai Zone again and hope to start roots on my new large cutting, thanks again ! Tristan also enjoyed himself and couldnt believe how many trees you had. I'm wondering when Laura's going to start a TH-cam channel ?!?!
I have one of your Bullhorn Acacia's from a seed this year and it has a really nice set of horns on the top! Bonsai J and I were just looking at it yesterday and it's about a 18 inches tall!
I've been looking online for those Medium leaf Benjaminas with no luck. Maybe I'll try Microcarpa....I seen a forest "Too Little" Benjamina at the the Cincinnati Bonsai Show that had a bunch of little ferns below that looked very nice, but I like your temple setting.
Yes, most Ficus will branch out from around the cut point. The Ficus benjamina is a little more difficult and more unpredictable, but a strong tree pruned back hard, will get an explosion of new branches.
I believe they are like the Ficus benjamina, they like to be pruned back slowly, not hard pruned like I just did. It is better to slowly reduce them if you can.
Hi Nigel, love your content! Also sad to see your yew is not doing that great... I just wanted to say you sounded so calm from 13:20 on. Maybe you should invest in a button microphone and produce some nice asmr vids :) greetings from the netherlands!
Please let us know what happens to this tree next year. I've always heard f. Benjamina does NOT back bud. Jerry Meislik says it'a a 30/70 chance it will back bud after hard pruning. I'd be very interested.
@@TheBonsaiZone Nigel, I'm cheering for the success of the tree. So many folks who have a f. benjamina and have been told that they NEVER back bud are interested as well. Personally I love ficus, but I'mma sticking to the f. mincrocarpa (tiger bark); they take a lickin' and keep on tickin' (just don't underwater it), plus, if you mess it up, just hard prune. Benjamina...that'a a whole nother story. If you can get it to back-bud, I might reconsider. beautiful trees.
How's this one recovering Nigel? I always loved the idea of a ficus bonsai growing over (and through!) the temple you made, so I hope it's doing well. Should look really great with a lower canopy :)
I think you are thinking correctly! I'm trying to get time, but there has just been too many things going on a once, the roof, the truck and orchard. Better to be too busy than being idle I suppose!
I had a 10 foot Benjamina tree that I trunk chopped to about 6 inches hoping it would back bud, but knowing it probably wouldn’t. It died lol. But I rooted a number of cuttings from the top!
Thanks, I hope you are enjoying them, here are two videos on this.... th-cam.com/video/gXIIpxUqxdY/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/UagmuAwhYWE/w-d-xo.html
Good luck with your ficus. Where are the good spots to get bonsai pots? I'm going to check out kimsnature.ca/bonsai/ some time soon as it's not to far from me any other suggestions?
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone ... wouldn’t have you any other way!!! I’ve been happy last as many your videos reflect!!! Just glad to have watched another video video... thanks!!!

Great comment

The fern looked amazing there. Natural looking, like in a real rainforest.
I may try and get a lot of tiny ferns for the temple some day, they do make it look good!
@@TheBonsaiZone looking forward to it. It's a beautiful planting.

Cool that you get to visit the ZONE. I thought you might like that larger cutting. Hope it works out well for ya.
The zone is the coolest ! I've got my fingers crossed here the cutting survives, definitely a beauty.
Oh yeah, I remember you doing that planting!!! Wow, it's been three years!
I need to work on my Bullhorn Acacias, one is HUGE!

@@TheBonsaiZone That's awesome! You've made my day! They're such vigorous growers!
“It probably won’t kill the tree.”
OK, good luck then. 🍀
A very risky operation, but I had to do it!
Really drastic pruning you've done Nigel, cant wait to see the result.
Thank you, I hope the tree buds out and doesn't die back, I'll know by the end of winter!
I'm excited to see how it will respond to the pruning! It looks great over the temple. It would be a shame if it wouldn't survive...
Always loved this ficus of yours! So great being able to see all the videos of it and get to watch it grow and evolve!

Good luck little Ficus! Survive!!!
Go, Go, Grow!
Thanks, I have a huge ficus and I was scared to trim it but now seems like it wouldnt be a bad thing to do.
Tough love pruning on the ficus.
Reminds me of when my mom used to take me to the barbers
I love your videos. Basically just watch your stuff on a loop
Thanks Quinn, I'm coming close to my 500th video soon, unbelievable!
Looks great, I always try to predict the cuts you'll choose ahead of time. You should put the link to when you made the temple on here too. ;)
I made the temple before I started the Bonsai Zone channel, but I'm hoping to create some more ruins this winter for a video. Stay tuned!
I’m new at this! Question can I cut back the woody part of my fiscus bonsai and will new growth come from that area?
Yes, most Ficus will branch out from around the cut point. The Ficus benjamina is a little more difficult and more unpredictable, but a strong tree pruned back hard, will get an explosion of new branches.
looks really awesome they way you hand built the temple. I remember this being one of the first plantings that made me interested in your channel.
Thank you, I'm hoping to get the temple in a new pot and get a really nice landscape going. I've just got to get the tree to live now!
@@TheBonsaiZone oh yeah, btw hows the willow leaf doing?
Any pruning advice for Ficus nerifolia based on your experience?
I believe they are like the Ficus benjamina, they like to be pruned back slowly, not hard pruned like I just did. It is better to slowly reduce them if you can.
Your Ficus is looking very nice! I have a lot of these growing everywhere in my area, lots of times on other trees or walls.

if you didn't want to risk a hard prune, what would you do instead Nigel?
I'm a bit concerned about the three branches coming from the same point. It's gonna continue to swell.

I like that, it's very neat!
Thank you, a long term work in progress, I sure hope the tree lives!
Have you ever thought of "moderation" instead hard prune???????
Wow !!! By seeing your face, i see Bob rose .
Same hair
Same relaxing voice
Talents
And the trees, he loved trees as you do , am i right ?
how you make the soil! it seems stones to me...
The soil is perlite and turface, sifted to remove the fine particles and dust. Roots love to grow through this type of soil.
here in the philippines we prune our ficus during the rainy days
Thanks!!
Great upload thanks the bonsai zone.
very nice
Thank you, I hope it lives on!

When is the best time to prune a bonsai tree?
That highly depens on the type of tree you are training as a bonsai. What tree do you want to prune?
@@@3sechsund80er
I have a pomelo tree. There are 4 trees in one pot.
@@norinaalcordo3139 Thats a tropical fruit tree, honestly i have no idea when to prune it.
