Loved the root work and talk-through. Your lessons have given me a LOT of confidence with my own tropicals. Your new pot is so righteous, I’m diggin the deep colors.
Congrats 🎉 on the award - well deserved!! Impressive root work as always - root pruning master. Love the new pot, especially how the green on the bottom matches the trees foliage.
Really coarse soil works good with ficus: Early this year, I planted one microcarpa in pure pumice of 8-16mm: The best fine root growth ever. For the cold season, I used the same pumice and am trying an air-pruning pot (actually the pot is a basket for placing and retrieving flower bulbs into / from the garden easily). The ficus is already showing root tips on the outside. Amazing.
I just subscrided to your channel. I 'm new to Bonsai . I'm starting out with a big bushy Boxwood Shrub and a Spartan Juniper. You've got a ton of vids on Boxwoood so I think I'll launch out with that one first. I'm' gather some cheap plants for local big box stores here in Utah.
With all those leaves you can mulch all around your greenhouses to keep out the cold. The floor could be covered also to hold in the heat. Trees in pots on the ground in the greenhouse can be covered with leaves also to keep the pot from freezing solid also. Just some thoughts on leaf usage.
So in general, you can prune deciduous trees in late fall and root prune as well (if needed)...I've been thinking about trimming my Maples as the leaves have been falling off but was not sure...I know I want to start repotting and root pruning my conifers (in pots for about 3 yers now) but not sure if they have been dormant long enough...Thanks for another great video...
Hi Niguel, From Philippines, May ask something on how bonsai can bear fruits?, I have some sort of bonsai which is fruit bearings like tamarind and governor plum, my tamarind is air layered and it was about 7 years or so, before it bear flowers but it doesnt grow to became fruit... I am your avid fan and still learning about bonsai,,, hope to discuss this on your future video...God bless!!!
Hi Nigel, thank you so much for your amazing channel! I don’t have access to akadama or safety zorb, so I’m wondering what soil mix you would recommend for my bonsai. Would a mixture of perlite, LECA, pumice, and coco chips be suitable? Also, I recently bought a 1.5-meter Ficus benjamina in a nursery pot. I’m planning to turn it into a bonsai in the spring and do a heavy pruning. Do you think I should also prune the roots and place it directly in a bonsai pot, or should I wait to do that later? Thank you!
That sounds like a good soil mix!!! Yes, I would do some root work at the same time as the big reduction. The tree will have a lot of vigor and doing both the top and the bottom would be best!!
That tree looks awesome in your pot!! You totally deserve that award Nigel!
Congratulations on the award, Nigel!!! Well deserved. I love the way the ficus looks in your pot!
Thanks Izabela, I finally used the pot!!!
I started my bonsai hobby with rubber trees because of you! I love them too!
Very nice. The trunk has definitely changed. I remember when it resembled a baby elephant and trunk..❤❤

Pruning and root work done by the Master. Superb work Dr. Nigel. Your surgical skills are easily followed.

It's an honor to have a master’s opinion on my future bonsai. Thank you very much!
The scars on this tree look almost like eyes right now. Good Halloween tree in my opinion. Haha
Is it realy safe to repot ficus in this time of year?
I think they are pretty safe to do whatever you want with as long as its healthy and you give it good care after
Theres one condition - growlights.
Every time you strip out one of these full layers of moss from your plants my heart just stop 😅
You could bonsai a fence post, LoL, where is your postal address?
