The Edmund Fitzgerald was based out of (and owned by) The Northwestern Insurance Co. in Milwaukee Wisconsin. It hauled iron ore on all 5 great lakes. I live in Milwaukee, and by November it's usually already snowing. The ship sank on November 10th, 1975. Gordon Lightfoot donated all the proceeds from this song to the 29 families of the 29 crewmembers who died. The actual wreck is an official graveyard, and diving is not allowed there. The only thing taken off the wreck after they found it was the brass ships bell and used for a memorial. I'm in my 60's and can remember vividly the storm and all the news stories. There's another video on U-Tube that shows the ship and goes into detail about all this.

Superior 'never gives up her dead' because the fresh water is always ice cold, so bacteria can't form to cause bodies to float.

29 men died that day. Ever since the tragedy the Mariners Church has rung their bell 29 times on the anniversary. When Gordon died they changed it to 30 bells every year.

Lightfoot did a shipwreck song in 1967 "wreck of the Yarmouth Castle" it's loaded with rich images as well.
LIKE A TOY SHIP ON A MILL POND SHE BURNED ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT
THEN SLIPPED NEATH THE WAVES IN THE MORNING.

The only thing place not mentioned in the song. She went down on the Canadian side of lake superior. Gordon was Canadian. That's why he called the Fritzgerald the pride of the American side.

I've been on the ship William A. Irvin, which is very close to the design of the Edmund Fitzgerald and so the ship has three separate functions. In the front (bow) you have the Bridge that consists of the ship's steering, communication, navigation, mess (kitchen) and living quarters.
At the very back, (stern or aft) you have engineering, which deals with all the mechanical needs of the ship like the engine, power, hydraulics.
Between Bow and Stern, is the Cargo Hold and it is a large and deep sections that takes iron ore. Once it's filled, Hold Covers are used to close off the top in order to keep water out.
It is believed, that because the ship was overloaded and setting too deep into the water (displacement) and that the hold covers were old and not sealing out water and because they were going through extremely rough seas, that water filled the cargo space and the ship sank, with all crew going down with the ship

Excellent reaction haven't heard this in awhile! SS Edmund Fitzgerald was an American Great Lakes freighter that sank in Lake Superior during a storm on November 10, 1975, with the loss of the entire crew of 29 men. When launched on June 7, 1958, she was the largest ship on North America's Great Lakes, and she remains the largest to have sunk there.

I was 14 when it happened, we watched with hope and faith every night. I still hear the 29 bells to this day, sons, brothers and fathers. They were afraid, they did the best they could. Most people don't know how personal this tribute was for Gordon Lightfoot. It went number 1 on Canadian Charts, Number 2 on US charts, and 40th in England. Gordon Lightfoot gave almost every dime the song made to the families of the 29 men lost.

I've lived in suburban Detroit for my entire life, and visited the "maritime sailor's cathedral", Mariner's Church in downtown Detroit in the shadow of the Renaissance Center where I had an office overlooking the Detroit River for a decade or so. The Great Lakes are large enough to allow for large waves to build up in gales. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was big news back when it happened, and there have been a number of good TV documentaries seeking to explain how the wreck happened. Unfortunately, just like with airline crashes, liability and insurance issues cause experts to issue different "opinions" as to the cause. Waves as high as 31 feet were recorded by a nearby ship. One theory is that such large waves overan the deck of the ore carrier and entered the hatches that had not been properly secured (blame the crewmen), while others insist the ship ran aground on some shoals near their normal route from which the storm had caused a deviation, cracking the hull and allowing water to enter the cargo hold (blame the captain). Other claim the ship was overloaded beyond maximum specifications (blame the corporation). There is no one generally accepted theory. Winds were a steady 58 knots, with gusts up to 70 knots, that fateful night.

I’m from Ottawa but have family in Detroit and have driven by the cathedral many times. Is it worth the visit on the inside?
Big props to my fellow Canadian and great storyteller Gordon Lightfoot. My two favourite songs of his are this and, very poignant for Detroit, Black Day In July.
My Canadian aunt from Ottawa married my American uncle from Detroit on Canada’s centennial birthday here in Canada’s Capital BUT settled in Detroit. My aunt moved to Detroit around three weeks prior to the 1967 Detroit riots!

I remember the first time I heard this song when I was 5 years old back in 76. I've also spent over 27 years within the grasp of Lake Superior as she often controls the weather around her. Visiting her should be on most peoples bucket list. Love and respect her beauty and anger equally, is the best advise I can give. She shines during extremes like how she throws nonstop mini tornadoes into the sky when its 30 below over her iceless open waters. If you are lucky enough to catch this during a sunrise, they become tornadoes of fire.
Sadly what happened to her and her crew before that fateful voyage was criminal. The typical weight limits imposed for that time of year was lifted in the name of profit. The site was also corruptly made illegal to dive on so no proper investigation could be done leaving only a single check of $600 to be paid out for each of the 29 souls lost that night. I would argue many more than 29 souls were forever changed.
The ship (SS Arthur M. Anderson) about 15 miles behind her was measuring waves of 25 feet. I will also add that many believe the lyrics "The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound" is actually the wires snapping signaling she just broke her back.
google maps location of her last time getting loaded 46.6952638387159, -92.02426342986556
google maps location (roughly) where she now rests. 47.00680202770732, -85.1392958565533
    Peace/JT

He's a troubadour and balladeer as much as a singer - there's a story in each of his songs. In this case, it's a true story from the 1970s, though he somehow manages to make it sound like a traditional song from centuries ago. You need to hear his song "If You Could Read My Mind". And thoughts going out to those in the US southeast currently experiencing similar weather to what hit the Edmund Fitzgerald.

After seeing the photos of the wreck, the most likely scenario is that one of the huge waves reported by the Anderson caught the stern of the Fitz, picked it up, and drove the ship bow first into the bottom. Whatever happened clearly happened very fast, as there was no distress call.

Part of the crew were in their 40's 50's and 60's and the other part were only in their 20's. To put into context of how bad it really was The Ship Arthur M Anderson maybe about a mile or 2 behind The Fitzgerald reported the Waves going over the Pilothouse which would be waves exceeding 30 to 35 feet in height. So yeah as a guy who live near the coast of Lake Huron on the Canadian Side in Ontario the Storms on the upper Great Lakes are no joke and not to be taken lightly.

On that subject, one of the problems about young people reviewing music 2 or 3 times their age is they lack historical context. Some fan or sub says to you, hey check out this tune! And you do, and you give your opinion (generally overwrought) and la la la....
For instance, this was a great story told to music. But Gordon Lightfoot was already known for telling great stories to music before this song came out. What made the story intriguing is that the song was electric. Gordon was an acoustic folk artist. This song was a 180 degree departure from all his previous songs. He did it for impact, and when we first head it back in the day, we was all, what the fuck Gordon? The song was unexpected and awesome.

They write also a song about a shipping disaster: Estonia, a ferry that sank in 1994.
Or their song 'Out of this world'. Awesome song, about the failed attempt to break the speed record on water...
... 300 miles an hour on water in your purpose-built machine...
There is a nice video on yt of this song with footage from the movie 'Across the lake' with Anthony Hopkins, which is about this true story.

I remember when the news of the Edmund Fitzgerald's sinking came out. It was a great tragedy and Gordon was the one to write a song about it. He has another ship song titled The Ballad of The Yarmouth Castle about a ship burning. I like this song about The Edmund Fitzgerald but I would put it near the bottom of a long list of Lightfoot songs. You sound like you are from the South; why don't you treat yourself to a true Canadian legend. His songs are all up here on TH-cam and it is his earlier stuff that really shines. He is one of Bob Dylan's favourites. Check out from around 1980 and back, especially the mid to late 60s music. You will love that you did.

This was a huge radio hit, much beloved by people, and certainly the most famous song by Gordon Lightfoot. But his finest, and most moving song, IMHO, is The Canadian Railroad Trilogy, which features extraordinary musicianship along with Gordon't distinctive and highly emotive voice, and which tells the epic story of spanning the North American continent with a set of iron rails. The song is full of the spirit of the age of the industrialist back when nature was a deadly beast to be subdued and tamed, and it is worth listening to if only to constrast that spirit with the current zeitgeist that seems willing to kill 7 billion humans if that would restore the wilderness our great-grandparents viewed as the enemy. Life is strange and wondrous.

The imagery that Lightfoot uses stems from Native American lore (and, yes, he has Native American ethnicity). So, yeah, in so doing he "personalizes" the Great Lakes because Native Americans (re: the Chippawa as he refers in the song) did so as well. (P.S. My favorite line in the song is "Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?" I was in the U.S. Navy for 8 years and, trust me, Mother Ocean (and, in the songs case, the Great Lakes) *does* make you wonder exactly that because it can get freakin' ROUGH out there! To the point of you asking yourself "Is this EVER GONNA FREAKIN' END?")

It's difficult for me to watch a reaction to this song. I moved to Michigan (lower peninsula) on the west bank of Lake Huron in 1978, my first assignment in the US military, which was not long after the release of this song and the tragedy itself. During my time in Michigan, I became acquainted with the lifestyle, history and culture of those who live near the Great Lakes. It's difficult to listen to a reaction by someone who doesn't have this context. How many reactors even know the names of the Lakes (Superior [Gitche Gumee], Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario), and the significance of each to the area, for both Canadians and Americans? Ms. "Have a Barry Nice Day" gave a good reaction, but at the point where she said she almost became emotional, I, now 45 years later, still always get emotional.
