Isiah Thomas Sets Single-Quarter Playoff Scoring Record

- May 8, 1987 - In Game 3 of a second round match-up with the Atlanta Hawks, Isiah Thomas scored an NBA playoff record 25 points in the third quarter-finishing with 35 in all-as the Detroit Pistons rolled to a 108-99 victory.
"I could see it coming," teammate Bill Laimbeer said following the performance. "Isiah gets this gleam, this glow about him."
Thomas' record stood for just two days, before Golden State Warriors guard Sleepy Floyd erupted for 29 points in the fourth quarter of his team's Game 4 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Floyd's postseason record still stands today, while Mark Aguirre (1988) and Charles Barkley (1994) have taken over second place with 27-point quarters.
Thomas would go on to match his 25-point single quarter performance in Game 6 of the 1988 NBA Finals, only this time he did the bulk of his damage with a severely sprained ankle.
Lastly, to answer the question regarding Thomas donning his full first name on the back on his uniform: His former college teammate at Indiana, Jim Thomas, was vying for a roster spot with the Pistons in training camp in 1986 before being cut a week before the start of the regular season. Isiah's full first name was likely a unique equipment manager solution to having multiple Thomas' in training camp, perhaps after jerseys were already ordered and stitched for returning members.

Most new fans only know that Isiah was a scorer. What they don't know is that Isiah was a Phenomenal passer who at one point in his career worked his way up to 3rd Alltime in career assists.
In only 12 seasons
Magic had James Worthey running the break. Isiah had Kelly Tripucka. Magic had Jabbar. Isiah had Lambeer.

@@HakeemTheDream616 thomas would have done the same. Majic would have been able to use his ability to go on low post and still get passes to cutters. He would be just as dangerous. Think is Mark Price just slowed it down at halfcourt. Nance harper .who was other guy played with Suns? Anyway lots of guys who ran rhe floor 70s 80s. Aba guys like Issel. My all time underrated guy was Bobby Jones. 6'9 long. With a non stop motor. I would take Dumars, moncrief, pippen, jones and a pick of 6 or 7 centers against dream team top 5.

Isiah will never get the credit for being a top flight player from basketball historians and I also believe that his size(6-1 185)was held against him as well.If he had came along in a previous era he would be much more appreciated.

Jim Thomas, his former teammate at Indiana, was with the Pistons throughout training camp and most of the preseason that year before being cut. Assuming Isiah's jersey was already made and ready to go, the equipment manager likely had to get a little creative to differentiate between Isiah and Jim.

Tommy Gibbs Yeah Vinnie’s first name is what always threw me off too. Isiah’s kind of makes sense but I don’t have an answer for Vinnie. Though, on account of his popular last name I guess there could have been another Johnson in camp too but I don’t know about it.
