  • Bengali film actor Soumitra Chaterjee speaks about Bengali film director Satyajit Ray at the sets of Apur Sansar. He says " Very first day the sequence happen to be in the labelling and bottling shop where Apu goes in search of a job. I was rather tensed I must confess because I never faced a camera before except for a purpose of camera test which Mr Ray took of me but then the shooting went of very smoothly and in fact there wasn't one NG at all. But before the first day shooting, I would like to say that Mr. ray really prepared me for that because I am very sure that he must have assess my potential before he selected me for a role."
Soumitra Chatterjee or Soumitra Chattopadhyay (Shoumitro Chôttopaddhae; born 19 January 1935) is an Indian Bengali film and stage actor and poet. He is best known for his collaborations with Oscar-winning film director Satyajit Ray,with whom he worked in fourteen films, and his constant comparison with the Bengali cinema screen idol Uttam Kumar, his contemporary leading man of the 1960s and 1970s. Soumitra Chatterjee is also the first Indian film personality to be conferred with the Commandeur de l’ Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, France's highest award for artists. He is also the winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which is India's highest award for cinema.
Satyajit Ray was an Indian Bengali filmmaker, widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a visit to London.
Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily aimed at children and adolescents. Feluda, the sleuth, and Professor Shonku, the scientist in his science fiction stories, are popular fictional characters created by him. He was awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University.
Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with Aparajito (1956), and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) (1959) form The Apu Trilogy. Ray did the scripting, casting, scoring, and editing, and designed his own credit titles and publicity material. Ray received many major awards in his career, including 32 Indian National Film Awards, a Golden Lion, a Golden Bear, 2 Silver Bears, a number of additional awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies, and an Academy Honorary Award in 1992. The Government of India honored him with the Bharat Ratna, its highest civilian award, in 1992.

He is definitely a great actor. But there is nothing to be proud of his English. It's just another language. He didn't know Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian and many more language. I am a great fan of his acting. His Feluda portrayal, his theatre excellence was really great.

@@viruda21 I will not make any generalizations. I can only say that Bengali art cinema had a different origin therefore the kind of actors it attracted was of a higher intellect. Since you mention Salil Chowdhary, he was the only music director in Bombay Film industry who could read & write the western musical notation. He also did all the orchestration for his songs himself.

Command over English is not the only benchmark of a well read or articulated person. Command over any language is. Fascination towards English is a colonial legacy which, we, Indians , find very difficult to let go.

Wow what a treat! It's great to get insights about Satyajit Ray's style of directing actors from an actor who worked so closely with Satyajit Ray. Like most actors, Soumitra Chaterjee too totally believed in Satyajit Ray's cause and let hime be moulded by the great director! Looking forward to more such rare clips on Satyajit Ray. Thank you.
