My dad showed me this movie on VHS when I was 7. I'm now 20. This is my favourite Godzilla movie, and one of my all time greatest movies I've watched. 🎶 Jet Jaguar.. Jet Jaguar!!
I’m of the opinion that a change of tone and demographic doesn’t necessarily mean a drop and quality. I honestly don’t think that every Godzilla movie needs to be a dark social commentary like the 54 original. Other types of movies should be allowed. That’s part of what I love about this series. There’s a Godzilla movie for everyone. I actually think this film is pretty decent as far as 70’s kids movies go. Maybe kids movies in general. It’s a fun, entertaining romp with a quicker pace than films like Astro Monster or Terror, and can thus retain a younger viewer’s attention better. I could complain about stock footage and trying to ape Ultraman and whatever, but why bother? For the budget and the time it took to make, it’s a miracle this film isn’t on the level of something like Gamera Super Monster. I think this movie is just fun and anyone who genuinely hates on it is probably putting too much thought into something made for their little brother, not them. Also Jet Jaguar And Megalon are awesome, I don’t care what anyone says.
This one is definitely cheap and kinda unoriginal, but I still love this one. Actually one of my favorite Showa movies. Just super fun and campy! The fight scenes are great, and the story and characters are just hilariously goofy. Also, the Monsters here are very human here, having very distinct personalities, which helps make the whole final fight really fun! Seriously, one of my favorite things to do as a kid was to watch some of the 70’s Godzilla movies, and just imagine what they were saying to each other! I’d just sit in front of the TV and dub over their roars with what I thought they’d be saying! Seriously, if anyone just wants to have a ball with these movies, try doing this with either Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, or Terror of Mechagodzilla! Just dub these monster brawls yourself. Terror of Mechagodzilla especially is an absolute joy to do this with.
True! Frankly, I'm surprised Jet Jaguar isn't more popular considering he was one of the best things about this movie! He's no ULTRAMAN, but he gets by!
I always loved this film simply because It was the first Godzilla film that I actually saw on the Big Screen. A local owned theater in town showed all kinds of older or not recently released films on the weekends and it was always a double feature. One weekend it was Godzilla vs Megalon and Destroy All Monsters. Love them both!
I remember watching this movie as a young teen in a movie theater that was full of nothing but fellow teens and children ! ! We screamed, yelled and laughed way out loud ( especially during the last 30 minutes) until the end! !!! Good times, had by all , good times !!!! 🙂😊😀😃😄😁😆😅🤣😂
This movie always reminds me of a concept someone once purposed on 4chan. A modern cartoon of Godzilla in the vain of Batman The Brave and the Bold. It was called Godzilla All Monsters Attack and was meant to draw on the campy fun of movies like this. Monster Island was more of a home then prison for the monsters and Godzilla even worked alongside the humans and could fly to other places with his atomic breath. It was even suggested Godzilla had a crush on Micki the psychic. He even included Zone Fighter and a version of Frankenstein among the heroes. He was dubbed Brodan by the fans of this nutty idea.
My first time watching this was with my four-year-old niece, since I heard it was great for kids. Had to keep her attention through the first part, but she was engaged once Godzilla showed up. So it was perfect for that.
I still have this on a VHS tape somewhere and, for all its misgivings, I have to say I have a real soft spot for it. In fact, guilty confession, I like most of the Godzilla films to come out of the 70’s though, as you say, they’re definitely enjoyed best when you don’t take them too seriously. 😉 I’m totally binge watching this channel right now; keep up the great work! 😃
One Christmas in the 80s my mother handed me a gift to open and it was Godzilla versus Megalon on VHS. This would be the very first (of many) Godzilla films I owned. I've watched this movie so many times that I nearly wore my VHS copy out. "This film only exists for rubber monsters to punch each other" ........and their ain't a damn thing wrong with dat!!!
I see a lot of people who have seen this as their first Godzilla movie, and while I think nostalgia may be clouding their eyes a bit when they talk about it, I can see why some people like it. Both Megalon and Jet Jaguar are uniquely memorable and perfect 70s era kaiju. Also this is the only movie to show the legendary Godzilla dropkick, a move so powerful it shatters the laws of physics.
I agree this is not the best Godzilla film. However, this was the first Godzilla film I ever saw and is what started my love of the Godzilla series. So, despite the poor quality it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Hi there Up from The Depth's. Love your channel and I hope you do more video's in the near future. I've been writing my own fanfic version of this film. It's titled, It's called Godzilla vs. the Kabulon Brothers: The Undersea Kingdom's SOS Strategy. The story is vastly different from the film in that instead of one, there are two Megalon’s. Both are robot’s representing Seatopia’s ancient guardians from long ago. I also changed Megalon from Kabulon because I felt this new name fits better. One of them causes a volcanic eruption and earthquake on Monster island, sending the monsters fleeing except for Godzilla. After the battle, Godzilla chases Kabulon to Japan. Goro Ibuki and his younger brother Hiroshi Ibuki see the second Megalon after it drains the water from Lake Kitayama. Instead of being villain’s, the Seatopian’s are victims of the nuclear tests and help Goro improve Jet Jaguar. I also improved and expanded on Seatopia’s history and cut out the part about them being allies with the M Space Nebula aliens since it’s never explained how they came to know each other. Gigan is in the story, but as a corpse. I made Goro and Hiroshi brothers instead of friends in the movie. I also added in new characters such as Einus, a Seatopian princess who helps them against Ana, another Seatopian who is controlling the Kabulon Brothers. In the film there was no given reason why JJ was created. But now there is. In a flashback, you learn that JJ was a project by Goro and Hiroshi’s parents for the purpose of fighting monsters until they are both killed during Gigan and King Ghidorah’s rampage through Tokyo in Godzilla vs. Gigan. It’s not the most original idea. You see it in other tokusatsu shows at that time, but what else are you going to do with a giant robot? Let it fight monsters, no duh! Jet Jaguar is later upgraded in the story as an advanced A.I. and can talk just like in the Godzilla SP anime. He has new abilities, ranging from a finishing move called the Plasma Beam he fires from his wrists when he crosses them in a X fashion. Jet Jaguar can also fire a taser-like attachment from his right arm and deploy a pepper-spray from his left arm. To freeze his enemy’s, Jet Jaguar can shoot a liquid nitrogen spray from his mouth. So what do you think? Do any of you have any ideas that can improve Godzilla vs. Megalon? Let me know by replying please.
This movie may be hokey and low rent, but that's a big part of its undeniable charm. It's a straight up Kaiju Wrestling Federation match and it's fun! Now if only movies that are meant to be more serious--looking at you, Legendary Pictures--would quit falling back on that formula and enforcing the stereotype that all Godzilla movies are like that...!
Jet Jaguar is a fan design which won a contest and the movie was actually originally about him, but Godzilla and Gigan were added later so people would be more interested in watching it
This was the first released Godzilla movie I saw in an old theater palace. The other double feature was Tarantula. I remember in that movie the sheriff used his pen knife to gut the spider that had maneuvered above him.
love it or hate it, you cant deny that this movie ruined godzilla's reputation in the US. then the 1998 film came along and made it worse. thankfully we got the 2014 film to clear that all up
Great review sm.p.h. this was my very first Godzilla movie what you got me in love with the character I really hope that we see megalon in the monsterverse
My first time seeing this one was when the Super Best Friends Play (a couple years ago back when they were still together) all watched it together Mst3k style. It was a wild ride and definitely help me enjoy its campiness. I'm not sure it still exists on the internet anymore though. Baby Rider!
One thing I really love about Gojira is that no matter how ridiculous and even stupid his movies get, they are never exactly "bad" well, okay, they are, but what I mean is that even at it's objective lowest point, the franchise still gives us a genuinely classic movie that's just plain FUN! Plus this movie has the Godzilla drop-kick, and frankly, how can you knock a movie with Godzilla drop-kicking an evil giant monster from Shamballa (or whatever the shamballa knock-off was called lol)
I love how Godzilla Punch and knocks out every monster that he fights like a boxer and his fire breath is so powerful everybody starts to fall down I love this Godzilla and his design is awesome it’s awesome because I like this Godzilla he’s like a boxer
My first piece of Godzilla media was the Godzilla Ps2 game, and Megalon was my favorite character there because of his cool design. Knowing more about his origin makes his appearance in game make more sense considering he’s kind of a joke character and takes more damage. Either way, Megalon is still one of my favorite Kaiju for his completely contrasting concepts. For having such a tough, and cool looking design, he appears in a polar opposite goofy, light hearted movie. Truly ironic. :D
Ever notice how fan reviews of Godzilla films; even those films considered bottom-rung, have something good to say about them? "Yes, this movie is a piece of s***t, but it passes through your colon painlessly."
Well, I agree with your review (once again). I saw this movie on my Betamax Tape from VPS Video, BUT AS a child. unter cinematic aspects a terrible Film.... After all, I like this part too. Not in my favorite list, but this Film is harmless and sometimes the mix between silly, cheap and funny scenes has his own Quality; -)
Its my favorite godzilla movie! Ultraman was amazing! It was cheap, but the story was deep! And its nice to see godzilla with a partner! Tag team* jajawa is the best partner! It was fun!
This was the very movie that made me start my Godzilla obsession, ever since I saw the clip of Godzilla doing his almighty gravity defying kick on youtube (and the added discovery of the Godzilland subfranchise), I just had to have watched the movies and since then, I've been discovering a lot of things in this insane franchise, it is very flawed yes, but I think this movie is absolutely great, a very goofy romp enjoyable to those wanting to see giant monsters do silly things and comical badassery, Megalon, Gigan and Jet Jaguar are my top favorite kaijus (behind the big G himself, of course) because if this film, ironically enough the movie I went to after this was SHIN GODZILLA, an absolute tonal whiplash to Megalon and I loved it to bits too. After watching a big bunch of the movies, I can still say Vs. Megalon is my favorite one even with all it's flaws and I cannot thank it enough for it introducing me to this wonderful franchise.
This is my favorite because this is the only one with megalon (my favorite Kaiju), that’s it. And it’s stupid, which I like. Other wise, it’s Godzilla vs Destroya and Final Wars. And yes, the fight is perfect.
I lived this movie growing up. On ABC in the afternoons they would have Godzilla week and I sit and watch all week I loved all the monsters then as I do now Is there a reason why Jet Jaguar never appeared in another Godzilla movie? Every other monster has had a reboot of sorts from Rodan to Mothra and King Ghidorah. They should do a reboot of Jet Jaguar.
I don't think anyone needs advice not to take it seriously. This movie is hugely entertaining, full of humour. One memorable scene has Megalon shooting one of his red-hot bombs from his mouth, which Godzilla knocks back intot Megalon's mouth, where it explodes and smoke comes out of his ears. As for the 1998 (?) western Godzilla, where G was a malign monster, that is forgotten because it was po-faced crap. In a similar way, the Lost in Space series 1966-1968 was inventive and great fun, and the humourless movie (1999?) was a turkey.
Sort of like a guilty pleasure for me. I'm not sure if I should give this movie 2 or 3 stars out of 5. I just can't stop smiling when watching it. Also Godzilla drop kick.
I still like this movie, As you get older you do see the stock-footage as you get older. But it does bother me like Godzilla Revenge. and also, Name my TH-cam name after, Megalon. so there a good reason why I still love Megalon. I would love to see him in the MonsterVerse in the future, but I don't think it would happen.
I absolutely LOVE this movie. It's so damn stupid and enjoyable. The editing is atrocious, the plot is so poorly conveyed, the characters are laughable, and the action is so over the top that you can't help but laugh. This isn't even mentioning how laughable the cheapness of it is. Godzilla vs Megalon is the kaiju equivalent of The Room and Batman and Robin and I love it for that.
As good as the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode of this is, I don’t think the movie is that bad. It didn’t deserve the MST3K treatment in my opinion.
I feel like the story doesn’t keep you engaged enough due to the aliens and story feeling way too bland and their being way too much stock footage. I didn’t really like the movie being childish either. I think the monster brawls were good but could have been done better and while the characters seem one dimensional, I think the way they execute their characters makes up for it and that goes for any other Godzilla movie in my opinion. Also the monster designs for all of them especially for Jet Jaguar and Megalon are cool. So I give this movie a 2.5/5.
"The movie is for kids" Every kid that grew up with this movie: It's so much more than that. In all seriousness, I really do think a film like this shows why catering to a child demographic doesn't have to be considered a negative. It just has to be done right.
Though you can't compare apples with oranges, gotta agree it was way better than the Last Jedi. At least GvM, it was fun, some memorable scenes, and had a song to stick in your head for life. 😊
Perhaps a good deal of it has to do with the fact that I watched the 1954 original at a very young age and I didn't watch this film until I was college-age, but I am among those who finds Godzilla vs. Megalon to be a travesty. I did laugh a lot at the film's flaws, but this was still a point where I feel marketing Godzilla for children, and almost completely altering and sanitizing the essence of the character were taken much too far.
I gotta disagree with you on this one. This film was agonizing to sit through, and by the time it finally gets to the big fight, I didn’t care anymore. I’m sure I’ll go back and rewatch the final fight just to appreciate it better, but this is probably my least favorite Godzilla film.
Yes, this is silly and cheesy, but it's FUN! It's as entertaining as a B (or Z) grade film can possibly be. And I vastly prefer it to Godzilla v. Gigan, as I found that film boring, with uninteresting human characters. OK, the heroes of this film are idiots, but they're LIKABLE idiots, which makes it OK. ;-) Also, this film was a considerable part of my childhood, so I remember it fondly. Now in my late 40s, I've watched it again and it still holds up as lighthearted entertainment. Just my 2 cents.
One of the cheapest Godzilla movies and one of the worst films in the series (objectively). I mean the plot is bizzare just like in the last film, the characters are bland as heck and make some laughably bad moments, the actors themselves are also terrible, the film also has some pretty terrible special effects lots of the time and much like the last film, the film is just chock full of stock footage (this film arguably has more stock footage than the last film). But the film does have 2 interesting and fun monsters (Jet Jaguar and Megalon) that should make a comeback, again also like the last film, the final fight which takes up the last 25 minutes, is one of my favorites in the series, it is also great to see Gigan make a comeback and this film does have the Godzilla dropkick, one of the best moments in the entire franchise. So this may be a bad movie, but BOY is it a fun movie. I will give this film a 5.4/10.
This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw as a kid
Klayton Fioriti hi
You're lucky by comparison. Mine was Godzilla's Revenge.
As a kid it must have been pretty entertaining.
HI KLAYTON! First one I watched was 1998, followed by G’s Revenge. Sounds like I didn’t have it much better off than you.
If he returns he also needs a redesign
This movie is like a bad Saturday cartoon and I love it.
Friendship ended whit ghidora, now megalon is my best friend
I'm a huge fan Gigan! Can I be your friend? :)
Mustif
let’s go
It's still an enjoyable movie. It's fun.
My dad showed me this movie on VHS when I was 7. I'm now 20. This is my favourite Godzilla movie, and one of my all time greatest movies I've watched. 🎶 Jet Jaguar.. Jet Jaguar!!
Can’t forget the epic drop kick.
Yes
When you describe it like that, Godzilla really is the Kaiju equivalent to Batman.
After seeing Gamera Super Monster this film is like water in a desert
This one is definitely cheap and kinda unoriginal, but I still love this one. Actually one of my favorite Showa movies. Just super fun and campy! The fight scenes are great, and the story and characters are just hilariously goofy. Also, the Monsters here are very human here, having very distinct personalities, which helps make the whole final fight really fun! Seriously, one of my favorite things to do as a kid was to watch some of the 70’s Godzilla movies, and just imagine what they were saying to each other! Just dub these monster brawls yourself. Terror of Mechagodzilla especially is an absolute joy to do this with.
Y'know, I'm really starting to notice a lot of Goros in this franchise. Goro Ibuki, Goro Gondo, Goro Maki (three times!), and hell, even Gorosaurus!
I always enjoyed this film regardless. Jet Jaguar needs to return!
True! Frankly, I'm surprised Jet Jaguar isn't more popular considering he was one of the best things about this movie! He's no ULTRAMAN, but he gets by!
I really wanna see Megalon again. Bet he would look cool af with modern day tech
Drum up the hype for this, theyll make it.
th-cam.com/video/XeuHi3FN840/w-d-xo.html
Boy do I got news for you.
HES BACK BABY! And he's more fun than ever before!
Big part of my childhood. Love this film no matter what
I love this movie so much. I still watch it until this day
One of my fav Godzilla movies!
Even That Godzilla drop kick isn't enough to save this movie.
How about 2 Godzilla drop kicks?
samiamtheman 73 Or him shaking hands with a giant robot.
I would’ve given this film 3 stars if it wasn’t for the drop kick. 5 stars.
Actually if you like z movies this is perfect
i disagree
I remember watching this movie as a young teen in a movie theater that was full of nothing but fellow teens and children ! !
We screamed, yelled and laughed way out loud ( especially during the last 30 minutes) until the end! !!!
Good times, had by all , good times !!!! 🙂😊😀😃😄😁😆😅🤣😂

So to sum up, this is one of the greatest movies ever made!
I’m totally binge watching this channel right now; keep up the great work! 😃
I never understood why Godzilla and
Megalon were on the WTC for the poster
Because Godzilla vs Megalon came to the USA in 1976. The same year as the King Kong Remake.
It's because they knew the future and tried to warn us.
One Christmas in the 80s my mother handed me a gift to open and it was Godzilla versus Megalon on VHS. This would be the very first (of many) Godzilla films I owned. I agree this is not the best Godzilla film. However, this was the first Godzilla film I ever saw and is what started my love of the Godzilla series. So, despite the poor quality it will always hold a special place in my heart.
always will be one of my all time fav godzilla movies, we even got a free godzilla comicbook when it played at the movies
Godzilla suit is my fav, along with the suits used in Godzilla vs Gigan, Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla final wars
Jet Jaguar breakout role. Hope he makes an appearance in the monsterverse!
This movie isn't bad, it's campy. And as silly as the suit looks I like the big eyed design.
He was so cute. Definitely my favorite Godzilla
What about the REPRESENTATION, I mean those two men are lovers, not friends.
Seen this at the theater as a kid and loved it.Robots were popular back then.As an adult i see all the problems.
Sometimes, fun is all you need ;)

Great review sm.p.h.
this was my very first Godzilla movie what you got me in love with the character I really hope that we see megalon in the monsterverse
The monster fights in this owed a lot to the world of wrestling.
I don't care what anyone says, I'm in love with this movie.
I loved this movie as a kid
How dare you? This movie was great. Seriously, what the hell?
I always wanted to see an updated Jet Jaguar, like, what would a heisei JJ look like?
Jhet Jagaaar JHET JAGAAAARRRR!!!
Fantastic.
Bring home the tail-slam!
Say what you want about this movie, yes it’s cheesy but I love this Godzilla design a lot for some reason.
My first time seeing this one was when the Super Best Friends Play (a couple years ago back when they were still together) all watched it together Mst3k style. It was a wild ride and definitely help me enjoy its campiness. I'm not sure it still exists on the internet anymore though.

Aside from GMK, Godzilla vs Megalon was my childhood in of itself. I remember eating these kellog yogurt balls whilst watching this film.
I personally really love this movie for how fun it is
My first piece of Godzilla media was the Godzilla Ps2 game, and Megalon was my favorite character there because of his cool design.

For having such a tough, and cool looking design, he appears in a polar opposite goofy, light hearted movie. Truly ironic. :D
Some people say Godzilla is still drop kicking stiff to this very day
Ever notice how fan reviews of Godzilla films; even those films considered bottom-rung, have something good to say about them? "Yes, this movie is a piece of s***t, but it passes through your colon painlessly."
Must have been running out of ideas since Jet Jaguar (am I spelling that right) was apparently a fan character made for some sort of contest
Saw this film via MST3K
"Way to grind the kids knees into the lava rock"

1:19 Aww :3
Eh this was the first real Godzilla movie that I ever saw.
Anyone who hates jet jaguar is crazy.
Ah yes my favourite TOHO movie: Gorgo and Superman have a date in Tokyo
This is my favorite because this is the only one with megalon (my favorite Kaiju), that’s it. And it’s stupid, which I like. Other wise, it’s Godzilla vs Destroya and Final Wars. And yes, the fight is perfect.
This movie got me into giant robots and Transformers!
I lived this movie growing up. On ABC in the afternoons they would have Godzilla week and I sit and watch all week I loved all the monsters then as I do now
Is there a reason why Jet Jaguar never appeared in another Godzilla movie? Every other monster has had a reboot of sorts from Rodan to Mothra and King Ghidorah. They should do a reboot of Jet Jaguar.
Why was Gigan even there?
You forgot how after Godzilla got his ass beat by Gigan and Ghidorah, he went home and worked out while watching Bruce Lee movies.
I used to hate watch this one over and over as a kid. I really disliked Jet Jaguar back then...Now, I think he rules!!
Rex Dart, Eskimo Spy!
This movie is perfect riffing material
I love this movie
Sort of like a guilty pleasure for me. I'm not sure if I should give this movie 2 or 3 stars out of 5. I just can't stop smiling when watching it. Also Godzilla drop kick.
The drop kick is the cherry on top
I still like this movie, As you get older you do see the stock-footage as you get older. But it does bother me like Godzilla Revenge. and also, Name my TH-cam name after, Megalon. so there a good reason why I still love Megalon. I would love to see him in the MonsterVerse in the future, but I don't think it would happen.
I enjoyed this movie as a kid and adult. If you're going to criticize every little thing, you won't enjoy movie. Classic Godzilla. TOHO
Ah, so the Seatopians were the ones worshiping Godzilla in KoTM. I don't care if that's stupid, it is now my head cannon.
This movie is so stupid and it's amazing for that
Uh another Kenny.
I'm not mad at this.
I present to you, "the room" of godzilla films.
As good as the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 episode of this is, I don’t think the movie is that bad. It didn’t deserve the MST3K treatment in my opinion.
This sadly lead to the idiotic mentality that Godzilla is only good for monster action.
I gotta say the movie isn't as bad as people thought, i actually quite enjoyed it
Me too but the only godzilla movies i hate is godzilla's revenge and son of Godzilla
I remember my mom getting this for 50 cents at a pic n save.
"The movie is for kids"
Every kid that grew up with this movie: It's so much more than that.
In all seriousness, I really do think a film like this shows why catering to a child demographic doesn't have to be considered a negative. It just has to be done right.
Jet Jaguar, was my sht !!
A better with drills instead of hands.
Its still better than the last jedi.
I did laugh a lot at the film's flaws, but this was still a point where I feel marketing Godzilla for children, and almost completely altering and sanitizing the essence of the character were taken much too far.
when I first saw this movie I thought the 2 adult leads were a couple rasing there son
👍
Godzilla vs. The Giant Cockroach. Should have called pest control/
this got on e more star than Godzilla vs the Sea monster? get your priorities straight boiiiii
