My dad took me and my brother to see it when it came out here in 76. I was eight, so all it’s flaws went right by me. And all the other kids in the theater agreed with me, judging by all the cheering and laughing going on. Especially the scene when Godzilla is shown swimming to the rescue. It was the only Godzilla movie I saw in the theater as a kid. I’ll always love it, but I freely admit my love for it is clouded by nostalgia.

I recently learned that they're making a sequel to Godzilla v. Kong (2021) so I started considering what monsters were left that they could adapt. And then it hit me. Kong is already living inside a Hollow Earth, and what other civilization/monster lives underground??? Godzilla and Kong v. Megalon and Gigan in the modern day would be absolutely incredible to see! Some of the Godzilla v. Megalon localizations even referred to Jet Jaguar as Kong, put him in a JJ suit for the new movie!

To me this is a top 10 definitive Godzilla movie. One of my favorite G designs. I love this end of the spectrum and find this more enjoyable than some others that might be revered more highly. I personally liked the music alot and apparently I wasn't alone. Mf Doom actually sampled music from one of the chase scenes.

I saw this at a drive in when it finally opened 3 years late in the US, on a somewhat bizarre double bill with a blaxploitation horror film called J.D.'s Revenge and some Pink Panther cartoons. I was incredibly excited because up to that I'd only seen Godzilla on TV and this was the big screen. I loved it unconditionally.

  • @CaseyChristopher
    @CaseyChristopher ปีที่แล้ว +3

I love this movie so much. I had it on VHS with the cover showing Godzilla and Megalon on the top of two skyscrapers and was sad that scene wasn't in the film. Owning the VHS seemed redundant because it was on TV quite a bit in the 80s. It is a cheesy Godzilla film but the charm is IN the cheese. Along with Godzilla vs Hedora these two were the Godzilla movies I watched the most over and over because they had a comedy element (some intentional, some not) that made them more fun. I also love the Dam destruction scenes and also thought, even as a kid that the damn sequence was quite exceptional among all the Godzilla films. I liked Megalon's weapons as well. Quite creative in retrospect. Thanks for the deep dive. I had always wondered what particular sequence of events led to the creation of this film because it has its own merits but also is quite visibly a mish mash of previous footage.. which.. even I could recognize as a kid. Subscribed.

He's just so fun and cool, Also fun fact: One of the producers of the Godzilla PS3 & PS4 game (Shunsuke Fujita) included him in the roster through sheer charm
"I didn't even ask for jet jaguar I just saw him on screen and I couldn't say no"
He's just that awesome, I feel bad for the kid who did Red Alone. I used to do art all the time and prided myself on the very few original things I did I couldn't imagine what he felt

I wanted to point out at 25:42 you say that the Megalon suit was one of the heaviest suits they made since the original Godzilla suit from 1954, but in your video for Godzilla vs. Hedorah, you mention that the Hedorah suit was about 300 lbs. Wouldn't that have been the heaviest suit up to this point, and only a couple years prior?

Throw in that genuinely kickass tag team final battle and you have a super fun watch, and a much better viewing experience than the tone whiplash of movies like Hedorah or Gigan which naively try to play themselves straight.

I've been writing my own fanfic version of this film for a while because I feel that it could be better. It's called, "Godzilla vs. The Megalon Brother’s: The Undersea Kingdoms' SOS Strategy", based on the title of an early script.
In the beginning of my story, its not the nuclear tests that destroy Monster Island, it is Megalon. But instead of one, there are two Megalon's. Both are robot's representing Seatopia’s ancient guardians. It causes a volcanic eruption and earthquake on the island, sending the monsters fleeing except for Godzilla. After a battle, Godzilla chases Megalon to Japan. Goro and Hiroshi see the second Megalon after it drains the water from Lake Kitayama. Instead of being villain's, the Seatopian’s are victims of the nuclear tests and help Goro improve Jet Jaguar. I also improved and expanded on Seatopia's history and cut out the part about them being allies with the M Space Nebula aliens since it's never explained how they came to know each other. So no Gigan in my story.
I made Goro and Hiroshi brothers instead of friends in the movie. In the film there was no given reason why JJ was created. But now there is. In a flashback, you learn that JJ was a project by Goro and Hiroshi's parents for the propose of fighting monsters until they are both killed during Gigan and King Ghidorah's rampage through Tokyo in Godzilla vs. Gigan. It's not the most original idea. You see it in other tokusatsu shows, but what else are you going to do with a giant robot. Let it fight monsters, no duh! Jet Jaguar is later upgraded in the story as an advanced A.I. and can talk just like in Godzilla SP. He has new abilities, ranging from a finishing move called the Plasma Beam from his wrists when crossed in a X fashion.
So there! I just fixed the movie! What do you think? Do any of you have any ideas that can improve Godzilla vs. Megalon? Let me know in the comment section.

Also call me weird but as a kid I always found the scene where the dolphin boat sinks to be really sad. I mean yeah it's better the boat than the kid but still seeing a happy children's toy falling victim to an accident caused by man is sad. That's probably why some war films and shows have scenes where we see an abandoned and destroyed doll/teddy bear.

For all of this movie's faults (and it has A LOT of them!), I cannot hate this feature. Saw this on Labor Day weekend 1976, in a theater now long gone. For me, it was the very first time watching a Godzilla movie on the big screen. Everyone in the audience had a great time watching it. And yes, I also recall the network debut on NBC. A lot of the more violent stuff that got cut out from the network showing, for the most part, ended up being the print that made it to these dozens of VHS distributors.

Hi there Big Action Bill. Love your video's and I hope you get more likes and subs. I've been writing my own fanfic version of this film. It's titled, It's called Godzilla vs. the Kabuton Brothers: The Undersea Kingdom's SOS Strategy.
Instead of one, there are two Megalon's. Both are robot's representing Seatopia’s ancient guardians from long ago. I also changed Megalon from Kabuton because I felt this new name fits better. One of them causes a volcanic eruption and earthquake on Monster island, sending the monsters fleeing except for Godzilla. After a battle, Godzilla chases Megalon to Japan. Goro Ibuki and his younger brother Hiroshi Ibuki see the second Megalon after it drains the water from Lake Kitayama. Sorry.
I made Goro and Hiroshi brothers instead of friends in the movie. I also added in a new character such as Einus. She is a Seatopian princess who helps them against Ana, another Seatopian who is controlling the Megalon Brothers. You see it in other tokusatsu shows at that time, but what else are you going to do with a giant robot. Let it fight monsters, no duh!
Jet Jaguar is later upgraded in the story as an advanced A.I. and can talk just like in Godzilla SP. He has new abilities, ranging from a finishing move called the Plasma Beam he fires from his wrists when he crosses them in a X fashion. Jet Jaguar can also fire a taser-like attachment from is right arm and a deploy a pepper-spray from his left arm. To freeze his enemy’s, Jet Jaguar can shoot a liquid nitrogen spray from his mouth.
What do you think? Do any of you have any ideas that can improve Godzilla vs. Megalon? Let me know by replying please.

My first Godzilla movie hehe, it fitted my taste at the time as i was seeking out these specific Japanese rubber suit B-movie FX movies. i am still charmed by this one even though i have other zilla-movies as favorites.

I think I can somewhat explain why this was the most viewed Godzilla Movie in the US? While I can't speak for everywhere, in the New York Media area in the 70's the local stations used to broadcast frequent "Giant Monster Weeks" or "SciFi Weeks" of afterschool movies. The two big ones were WABC (channel 7) and WWOR (Channel 9), neither of which ran afterschool cartoon blocks. Instead they each ran weekly series of afternoon movies once the Soap Opera's were done. The Giant Monster movies were by far the most popular. And we would get a healthy mix of Toho stuff, the Daiei Gamera movies, All of the American 50's-60's Giant Radioactive Insect movies, King Kong, The Beast from 20'000 fathoms, those few British ones, etc. I think they may have even occasionally run those X from Outer Space films. But of all of them Godzilla vs Megalon was probably the most often repeated one. I think it was because it was one of the first "new" Godzilla movies the distributors got. And it was bright and children friendly. Don't blame us. We wanted to see Destroy All Monsters more often. Part of it was also it had good bright color. Many of the older movies being Black and White. (Most of our Family TV's were still Black and White). Godzilla Raids Again and for some strange reason Godzilla vs Gigan were the two we would see the least. After Godzilla vs Megalon probably the most frequently aired movie was War of the Gargantua's. Somebody in programing really liked that one.

This was the only Godzilla movie I had on VHS. My mom got this for me one Christmas when I was a kid. It wasn't my favorite but because it was the only one I had I watched it a lot. Still remember the cover of the VHS had that poster of Godzilla and Megalon standing on the World Trade Center towers.

This is absolutely one of my favorite Godzilla movies. And absolute day after Thanksgiving Black Friday treat of the classic trio that was shown during the late seventies to 84. Around 1981 they put King Kong versus Godzilla as the first movie second movie Godzilla versus megalon third movie Godzilla versus The smog monster. I still do remember 1977 to 1980 where the three movies were started with Godzilla versus The cosmic monster followed by Godzilla versus megalon ending with Godzilla versus smog monster. What great memories. As bad as everyone tries to claim Godzilla versus megalon was. I think it's one of the greatest of the '70s Godzilla considering it is actually a sequel to Godzilla versus gigan. One more note about Godzilla would have been fighting gigan guidra and megalon in the first of those two movies originally but that was changed to the second movie which is an awesome movie. I can go on and on but that's it. Awesome stuff

I wouldn't have minded getting that book. It would make a great partner volume to my copy of Dave Barry Does Japan which has the same satirical theme, though it's probably less comprehensive. So far, your videos are a great addition to my limited knoeledge of all things Godzilla, of which i have always been a fan off since my childhood years.

Prior to the movie being released several local tv stations ram a similar monster art contest.
KTVU 2 in Oakland California participated.
I was already a Godzilla fan and submitted a drawing of a Lions body, eagle head and wings.
I was one of the winners and received free tickets to the premier.
    Fun Times!

    A new history video?!
What a gift to find under my tree!
6:17 - And that dolphin boat stands out in my mind too. No idea why, but I have a very strong but totally irrational dislike of it. I think it's due to its silly appearance and because of how useless/ineffectual it is at moving through the water.

This is the first one of these where I remember seeing the TV ads for its US theatrical run. It seemed to become a staple of weekend TV creature features not too long after that.
(The details in this video of the belated US release and its appearance on TV explain a lot of things for me! From my dim and jumbled childhood memories I hadn't twigged that this one got its notoriety in the US a few years after it had bombed in Japan.)

While I agree the movie is not very good. It is however fairly entertaining and great for background noise while working on other things. Also JJ is a pretty stand out character, surprised he didn't come back in Final Wars with just about every one else, but his appearance in things like PS2's Godzilla: Save the Earth always left me a fan, he's one of the few non Godzilla figures that are still in my collection.

I remember my brother telling me about seeing the Godzilla vs Megalon trailer. I got mad because I never got to see the trailer. I never got to see the movie in the theater. I finally saw the heavily edited NBC primetime version. And all I could keep saying over and over to my 12 year old self was "What the hell were they thinking!!?"
