What paint did you use? I'm trying to restore a rusty 88 shell that was originally painted that same apple-green.

excellent. saved from oblivion and preserved for posterity. I bought a shell like this about 3 weeks ago. nearly finished it. I had it sandblasted on low pressure to remove the rust. aluminium based car body filler was used to smooth over the pitting and restate some of the helmets body

46FreddieMercury91 what did you use to fill the helmet with? I tried spreading the filler in with a plastic knife but it didn’t work.

@@lucaslagiglia I used a plastic flexible spreader that I trimmed down to something similar to finger width and length, and round the corners off by trimming with scissors. You could make one from a piece of plastic but it has to be fairly flexible as It will allow you to follow the contours of the helmet. if the plastic is too hard then it will be particularly difficult to spread filler on the inside. but it will take a bit of practice to get the knack of it. It helps if you only make a little filler at a time and don't apply too thickly. Here's an idea

@@lucaslagiglia just to mention... an ideal material would be an old credit card or similar. perfect to trim down with just the right amount of rigidity . I cut a piece today 6cm long 2cm wide. perfect for the job and completely free. sometimes you have to make your own tools to suit you

That helmet still had some of the original paint, you shouldn’t have restored it, you should have preserved it by using some axolic acid to remove the rust

Keine Beschreibung der Arbeitsgänge, keine Beschreibung der verwendeten Materialien - der Beitrag ist nichts wert ausser das er Speicherplatz belegt. Schade- hätte man was draus machen können....

So you made a complete brand new helmet out of a historic relic? Sad. It lost all its value. Now its just another fake.

fridolo Not a fake. It’s an original helmet shell. Besides, I’d pay more for that than a rusting piece of metal.

@@LucienCressey Hello again! In no means i intend to sound rude or offensive. Just stating this to clear things out. What i was trying to say is that amongst collectors this helmet now has no value. It has been a great job refurbishing this to look almost new and it may serve for reenactment groups but its historical value is lost. Even if this helmet was in perfect condition and you put a decal on it it loses its value and is considered fake amongst collectors. I just say this as an information. Given the fact that the helmet was in a bad shape and therefore already at low value, no real harm was done. But if it was a paratrooper helmet in similar condition, its value would be around 1.000 euros even with cement on it. If you would refurbish it, it would again lose all its value. So you see what i mean. On historical pieces sometimes it is better to leave them as found, just cleaning the actual dirt. A little more info and a general idea about collectibles can be obtained at www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums Again, i hope you dont feel offended i just thought to share some information. Have a great day!

Another fake? Restoring a original german helmet destroys no value second its original! Youre just making it look presentable for collectors always make sure to take before and after pictures proof it was a relic
