    I adore Jesse Colin Young. Thanks!
    Shawn Colvin was in the group that, with Steve Postell, planned to play with David Crosby in February. They are doing the show as a tribute in August, so we will see Shawn at the Lobero in Santa Barbara. It will be my first time there. ❤

    "Banana" aka Lowell Levinger was an original member of "The Young Bloods" as was Corbett. A very close friend of mine Tim Haggerty had Banana playing keyboards in a great bluesy rock band in the early 80s called "The Bandits" they had a cool LP (Steal Your Heart), and a bunch of others from the band "WBBH". Tims older bro is the famed and well loved guitarist Terry Haggerty of "The Sons Of Champlin" (Bill Champlin). Tims son Aaron is/was also playing drums for one of the Earth Wind and Fire off shoots. Those Haggerty boys are talented musicians. Tim whom I've worked over the years with is like a cool older brother and makes everyone around him feel loved...... Probably just like you do Le.

    What a voice, uh? I met Jesse Colin Young back stage at California State College (California, PA) in 1975. Bobbi Humphrey a jazz flautist opened the show. He was so kind to me and my friends he let us watch the show from the side of the stage. When Bobbi finished her set she hung with us as we watched Jesse's show. Jesse was telling us stories of opening for the CSN&Y 1974 tour. What a great memory from my youth, I was 16. He was promoting his "Songbird" album. The night before, he played the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh and Brian Auger opened for him. Laughing to myself here he told us he didn't dig Brian's music. Fun fact:Jesse Colin Young and Art Garfunkel were in the same 4th grade class together.

Next thing we know they're throwing punches (No lie) JCY and a couple other guys separated them and this guy on the stage said "It's Time." Just like that they're hustled on stage and JCY turns to me and said "Come on you can watch from the side stage." I was in heaven.

    I remember in a late 70s High "Sckuul" music class seeing a documentary of a guy in the music business talking about the ups, downs and pitfalls. It was titled "Don't Quit Your Day Job". The strange (unknown to me at the time) but informative guest speaker was yep you guessed it Jesse Colin Young. I ended up quitting my day job a few times because of the music business calling....... Jesse was likely trying to do me a favor back then. With all the money I never made and riches I never collected I did have a great bit of fun and folly both. It’s 117 in Vegas right now. Staying in A/C this afternoon. Geof had a co-worker who, because of a change in routine and being under deadline stress, forgot that her baby was in her car when she got to work. It ended in unimaginable tragedy and grief. Heat is a killer. We who live with it in the desert know this. Visitors and newcomers sometimes don’t take it as seriously as they should. People visiting Death Valley in the summer are NUTS…..IMHO.

    Jesse Colin Young Biography by Matt Collar
    Best known as a founding member of the '60s folk-rock outfit the Youngbloods, Jesse Colin Young is a literate singer/songwriter with a warm tenor voice. Based in California since the late '60s, Young has distinguished himself as a broadly influenced performer with songs that touch upon jazz, blues, and country, and often incorporate themes of environmental and anti-war activism. Initially gaining fame with the Youngbloods' 1967 peace anthem "Get Together," he went on to a fruitful solo career, issuing albums like 1973's Song for Juli and 1975's Songbird. Despite a 1995 wildfire that destroyed his California home and threatened to burn his home studio, Young remained active, touring and issuing albums like 2003's Walk the Talk and 2019's Dreamers.

      Born Perry Miller in 1941, Young was raised in Long Island, New York where his mother was a violinist and his father worked as an accountant. Both parents shared a love of classical music and encouraged their son to play, giving him piano lessons from a young age. Following the family's move to Pennsylvania, 15-year-old Young enrolled at Phillips Academy Andover in Massachusetts where he took classical guitar as an elective. His musical interests soon overtook his other school studies as he eschewed homework to practice guitar and sing Everly Brothers songs with his roommate. He was ultimately expelled from the academy, and after finishing high school enrolled at Ohio State University. There, he lived behind a record store and further expanded his musical knowledge, digging deeper into folk, blues, and jazz artists. After a semester, he dropped out and after a few months of traveling across country, he returned to his parent's home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he spent a summer further honing his skills, diving deep into albums by Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Joan Baez, and others.

    • @Mark_Brooks
      @Mark_Brooks ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By 1961 he had transferred to NYU and spent several years balancing his studies with playing gigs at local Greenwich Village coffeehouses. Dropping out of school, he took a day job working at the Rockefeller Foundation and continued playing solo folk shows. It was during this period that he was put in touch with producer Bobby Scott, who came to see him perform at Folk City in Greenwich Village. This led to a recording session at A&R Studio, out of which came Young's debut album, 1964's The Soul of a City Boy, released on Capitol. Prior to the album's release he had adopted the name Jesse Colin Young (an amalgamation of western outlaws Jesse James and Cole Younger, and Grand Prix racer Colin Chapman) to avoid undue comparisons to pop singer Perry Como. A stripped-down production of solo folk performances, The Soul of a City Boy included a cover of the George Remaily song "Four in the Morning," which gained radio airplay and helped launch Young's career. A second Scott-produced album, Young Blood, followed a year later on Mercury, which was then run by Quincy Jones. It featured a more fully realized production sound, including musical contributions by jazz artists like bassist George Duvivier and drummer Grady Tate, as well as harmonica playing by fellow rising folk star John Sebastian of the Lovin' Spoonful.

    • @Mark_Brooks
      @Mark_Brooks ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Around this time he met guitarist Jerry Corbitt while playing a show in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They began hanging out and working on music together. Inspired by the Beatles, and looking to move toward a more electrified sound, they joined forces with keyboardist/guitarist Lowell "Banana" Levinger and drummer Joe Bauer with Young moving to bass. Naming themselves the Youngbloods after Young's second album, they developed a rambling, harmony-laden sound that touched upon the blues, country, and lyrical folk-rock. Playing regularly at New York club The Night Owl, they gained valuable experience opening for a bevy of touring performers. They signed to RCA and released a debut single, Corbitt's ragtime-influenced "Grizzly Bear," which charted in the Top 60 in November 1966. Their full-length debut, The Youngbloods, followed in 1967 and featured their cover version of Dino Valenti's idealistic peace and love anthem "Get Together." Released as a single, "Get Together" also made the charts, landing at number 62 on the Hot 100. The group quickly followed up with a sophomore album, Earth Music.

    • @Mark_Brooks
      @Mark_Brooks ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By the time the band issued their third album, 1969's Charlie Daniels-produced Elephant Mountain, they had relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area. As they were beginning work on the album Corbitt dropped out of the band, leaving Young and Levinger as the primary songwriters and creative drivers of the group. Under Young's influence, the album found the Youngbloods exploring more of their jazz and Americana influences. There was also a more introspective tone to many of Young's songs, with tracks like "Darkness, Darkness" and "Quicksand" addressing themes of death and depression and evoking the war in Vietnam. At the same time in 1969, RCA re-released "Get Together" as a single after it was used in a public-service commercial for the National Council of Christians and Jews. It again boosted the band's profile, landing at number five on the Hot 100. The group also hit the singles charts with Young's songs "Sunlight" and "Darkness, Darkness."

    The idea of anybody, in a car in this heat is horrific. Even getting into cars that have air conditioning. That takes forever to take effect. I just need to gaffer an umbrella to my chair again. Even though being on foot in the heat is very rough, I think avoiding the initial heat of getting into a car, that never had air conditioning, since I stopped driving, has probably helped whatever is left of my own constitutional hit points. I always had the umbrella on my mobility rig for a few years, hiking around, but had to undo it, to make it more portable for a long road trip in order to detail, fold, and wheely-pop slide it up into a backseat floorboard. I always carry gaffer tape, and large renovation bags with me on any road trip, to protect anyone else's vehicle, should they convince me to take the ride. There's a streamlined order that I load in and out, with lighter methods to pull out on quicker stops, easy to reach on the outsides, by myself, while the driver runs in first, with the remote key fob.
    I think I might splurge on a taller bigger umbrella than my ordinary one that I've bungeed to a small tent pole repair kit.
    It's since before the pandemic that I've been in a real sporting goods store. The mounted umbrella did help more in crosswalk situations I think. A lot of people also thought I might be a vendor selling ice cream though. I've considered the idea of just purchasing some dry ice and extra ice cream and see how it goes with possibly selling ice cream on the way back home. 😃 I usually just hope frozen bags of vegetables will sustain the ice cream going home. I might be less scary to buy ice cream from, than a person in a van, playing the eerie music. I mean, even though I have gaffer tape, I would be hard pressed to abduct anyone. 😂

      Thank you for sharing, on the road entertainment is its own kind of labor and peculiar offshoots of happenings.
      Thank you for reporting. An interior of a car is an oven on wheels and when sitting closed up it is a magnifier of heat.
      I no longer drive or have an automobile and my walking distance to and fro is 15 minutes each way for groceries. Frozen groceries are shopped for on cooler weather days.

      Hi Artemis, 😊 It takes me about forty minutes each way now. and I try to have at least one of the each ways, be in the dark, if not both. Sometimes there's no way around having to go out in the full on sun though. Some deadline I couldn't have orchestrated any sooner generally happens once in awhile, for a business only open like bankers hours, or to make sure the mail gets picked up for sure, and not just only a fifty percent chance.

      It began on 12/2/64 when I heard in Berkeley Mario Savio say:
      “There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part! You can't even passively take part! And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels ... upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop! And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!”
      We moved to San Francisco in late ’65 when Haight Street rents were cheaper Than North Beach and ended up first on Turk Street near Divisadero, later Anza and 2nd, and finally Oakland near the Berkeley border.
      The first music venues were at the Longshoremen’s Hall in ’66 with The Grateful Dead / Big Brother And The Holding Company / The Loading Zone.
      After the January 1967 'Be In' its began to falter, especially when the same year the radio was playing "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” written by John Phillips, and sung by Scott McKenzie. It was produced and released in May 1967 by Phillips and Lou Adler.
      Expectation usually slays novelty and by ’68 it was no more than a hope.

    Phoenix Fire Department Heroic Paramedics
    “…Extreme heat comes with the territory both for Phoenix and for its firefighters. They train by climbing stairs and swinging sledgehammers wearing up to 80 pounds of bulky, suffocating gear, and make a career of bursting into burning buildings and rushing toward explosive brush fires.
    But the past two weeks of unbroken triple-digit days have put heat at the center of their work, turning them into a summertime army battling to rescue homeless people who collapse in their tents, workers who faint in the sun and vulnerable older people struggling to breathe inside sweltering homes. Many are trained paramedics, and they estimated that some 80 percent of the department’s calls are medical emergencies…”

      This House Is On Fire
      lyrics by Natalie Merchant
      This house is on fire!
      Kick off your boots, come sit a spell.
      Listen to me worry, come and listen well
      All you better best come and lean in boys,
      I don't dare raise my voice
      I've been sitting here for the longest time reading all the warning and the danger signs
      I don't have the gift of the prophecy,
      Telling everybody how it's going to be
      Soon come, soon come the day this tinderbox
      Is gonna blow in your face
      I don't have the gift of the prophesy,
      Telling everybody how it's going to be
      You go passing wrong for right
      And right for wrong
      People only stand for that for just so long
      It's all gonna catch like a house on fire,
      Spark an evil blaze and burn higher
      In the whip of the wind
      That could start a conflagration
      Like there has never been
      This house is on fire!
